Players don't need to stay in the AFL system, if they don't like the rules involved.
Its pre emptive though.

We dont even know if hes gonna request a trade yet, if he does whether one gets done, if it doesnt whether stays or goes into the PSD.

Were all doing the hypotheticals to death but the general "**** him and the system" stuff is a bit gross to me.

So sounds like we all think nas is leaving now. Bugger
Genuinely not an ounce of me thinks Nas is leaving...at least for now

All the signs have been positive:
  • NWM has personally said the pull home isn't as strong
  • Ben Williams said months ago that if he was a betting man NWM would probably stay. Then it suddenly switched up when NWM started playing like a top player in the comp. Coincidence?
  • Absolutely no reason for NWM to sign now. There is no benefit to him. Assuming he continues this form, he may leave money on the table. There's no possible negative effect for him between signing now and signing post-season, only positives
  • Bergman looked all but gone from Port. Had interest from many clubs on huge money but rumoured to prefer St Kilda and bought a house in Hampton. Suddenly re-signs for 2 years to take him to free agency the same week it was reported St Kilda were confident NWM would stay - hence not having any trade capital for Bergman - likely for the same tenure. Coincidence?
  • Neither Adelaide club has close to the required trade capital unless they trade a required player
  • Every journo has said that they would lean toward NWM staying
  • Joey Montagna has had a smug look on his face every time NWM comes up on First Crack - each time hinting that he thinks NWM stays
  • Mason Wood said at a function in May that he's super confident NWM will stay
  • Tex Wanganeen must be super confident that he'll be on the Saints list next year if he's willing to play VAFA over returning to Port Melbourne

this is all just off the top of my head

The only genuine reason for thinking NWM is leaving is because its round 21. But that's immediatlely countered by the argument that Ben Williams is just playing the waiting game for St Kilda to cough up

Funny how his cousin Tex who is struggling to get on an AFL list isn’t homesick and willing to play interstate for Port Melbourne…

Players are lucky the sport is only played in Australia, most other sports would have them a lot further away from home during their career.

Thought you meant how many international sports have the same draft system where you can be drafted interstate...
Was in response to the above.

That reads like "hes lucky its a sport only played in Aus, if he played soccer hed have to go overseas".

In any event the AFL and its draft relative to Australian culture (where ALOT of kids stay very close to home for their whole lives) is unique.

No one has to like it but its tough to make too many comparisons as like for like.

They surely don't, and as far as the draft is concerned, they need to go where they are sent.

But we have now plenty of commentary on here about Battle making decisions based on what his spouse wants, and now "Mummy's boy" being thrown at Nas. Both are allowed to make decisions for whatever reasons they see fit. The Battle stuff sounds like many on here would like Battle to make decisions and "be the man" in his relationship. If he is happy in his relationship no one should care. What if Nas has unwell family members? It shouldn't really matter why he wants to move if he indeed makes that decision.

The stuff about the player is distasteful.

The system needs <redacted>ing. Its broken, and part of the reason many fans are so afraid of losing him because there is no way we can avoid a backward step if he leaves (because we cannot demand value in return because they would involve getting back established talent regardless of that talent's wishes).

Delusional

Zak Butters upon realising he's now worth less than Nas in a trade...

I don't get PMs, I don't know ITKs - but this is my read, feel free to shoot it down:

Hasn't signed because preference is to leave to Port but it's unclear if Port can actually get the trade done without breaking AFL rules/relying on an exemption
Port's inability to get the trade done leads him to stay and is a real chance of happening still

I'll take 2 years and won't be disappointed

Oh Tony74, lurker in the void,

Bearer of news in cryptic posts

We summon thee from the depths of the thread.

Speak now, post thy bi weekly reassurance.

Tell us Nas stays. Silence the South Australian horde. For their voice grows stronger

We shall melt, cry and yearn for a moment of clarity for our sanity.

New thread (part 2) so I'll restate my case:

  • the father-son rule adds nothing to the game. No one watches because of it. No other league in the world worth anything has it. It only entrenches disadvantage (better teams are more likely to have 100 game players). All based on dumb, stupid luck: the ability for past players to sire sons. It's ridiculous on face value.
  • The only fair price is the cost of acquiring the draft pick necessary in a mutually agreeable trade. Richmond couldn't pick Ashcroft last year under any circumstance. North couldn't pick Sam Darcy in 2021 under any circumstance. A team that had just made the grand final had exclusive access to one of the best two players in the draft. If the club wants a player, they should have to trade for that draft pick.
  • The NGA academies never added anything. Abolish.
  • The northern academies do benefit the league as the game needs to grow and those clubs need homegrown heroes. But the cost can't be made fair. So a compromise: one pick each year outside the draft for those four clubs.
  • I would make these changes along with a significant further increase in the salary cap, a percentage cut in the salary floor, a reduction in years for free agency rights to kick in, and a removal of the prohibition on players vetoing trades.

$85 for my very brave initial $10.

Im sure there is someone else that has him going for $50K - makes my $5K look insignificant.

Will be exciting on the night for sure.

Braver than me! I only had a measly $5 at 501

Not for nothing, but it doesn't matter why a player wants to move. A player can move for whatever reason they like. A lot of this stuff feels a lot like the Harry/Meaghan stuff: very distasteful and something that belongs to a long ago time.
Wow, you really insinuating there is racism in these comments. Could you point to one where it has even hinted at racism?
Holy hell this is becoming ludicrous.

I didnt take it as any insinuation of racism.

More people just turning on Nas. Granted i know and care nothing for the Meghan and Harry situation (which im sure probably did have a racial element to it)

To be absolutely clear, I was not insinuating or implying racism at all. I can see how the Harry/Meaghan comparison would lead to that conclusion but that was not my intention. My implication there was related to stuff around relationships. I read the word "cuck" in a post earlier, and it was more to do with that.

Yeah that’s fair although I still think AFL players have it very good when you consider the money they earn and able to stay close to home.

This is spot on. Especially as it appears the plan in the Footy dept was to first get Nas' body right to play more midfield time (RTB spoke at a presser earlier that his groins needed work).
So his opportunity to shine like he has in the midfield was always going to be later in the season.
I imagine Nas and his agent then agreed to delay a decision until his worth could be fully assessed.
I don't think this makes his agent greedy - it's just (unfortunately for us, dying for an answer) good business.
