2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th
AFL Draft: Wednesday, November 19th - Thursday, November 20th

TDK aside (who we're significantly overpaying.) That's a pretty ordinary list.

If Carlton get a top 10 and top 20 pick for that group. They haven't done terrible by any stretch of the imagination.

Wow I just had a look at the Trade Board the ill feeling towards the Saints is palpable. Finally we are relevant and the supporters from other clubs absolutely hate that we are able to attract players over their clubs. The same supporters have very short memories of whom they recruited for big dollars not all that long ago.

Granted we have had to pay big to make change, but Im confident the club have a solid plan in managing the cap going forward. They have been creating this space for the past 3 years, so Im sure they know what they are doing.

Now please just get Windy signed, as for me any progress will be killed if he chooses to depart.

Sorry but if I'm Wilke I'm taking it , he is 29 and has what 4 years left to earn some decent cash , i know he has something to fall back onto when footy is over but 4.5 Mill is life changing.

So your on say $100,000 in your current job and some bloke walks in and offers you $150,000 to do the same job , you're not going to seriously think about it ?

So purely from a business, financial sense Marshall should be agitating to move to Geelong. As we have already paid him the majority of his wage for 2026 and 2027, a transfer to Geelong would have him financially double dipping.

The Saints could actually use this to their advantage as Marshall is contracted to the Saints for the next two years and we have already paid the majority of his salary for those two years.

As we have already taken the hit with forward paying majority of his salary and Marshall has banked most of it already, this could form the basis of a great deal. For instance if Marshall is owed only $200k per year for the next two years, this is a great negotiation plus for us. At Geelong Marshall would be a $800k+ player, a settlement could be where Marshall and the Cats agree that to get Geelong, he gets a $200k bump for the first two years at the cats, ie Cats would only pay him $400k for the next two years, instead of the $200 he is contractually committed to get at the Saints.

For this the Saints get a hugely advanced pick/s upgrade, as this allows the Cats to bring in Marshall and gives them further salary flexibility. You would imagine that the Gabby and SOS are across this and using this as part of a huge number of scenarios to advantage the Saints. Clever work.
Yes to everything but the last bit.

Geelong are notoriously crap traders. So don’t expect anything amazing - therein which is the problem.

He can't take it though, not unless we agree to trade him.

He's contracted to the club and we will hold him to his contract ala Geelong with Tim Kelly

If only it was as easy as Wilkie just taking it, he is under contract.

Yeah I suppose he can agitate to leave, but I doubt it based on everything we have heard from him recently.

Of course anyone would think about extra money in any position. While the landscape is changing, there are still some players that will value loyalty, their mates and building something above extra coin. Plenty of players still sign for less money.

You could argue being captain of a club, the face of it, would auger for more opportunities down the line in your AFL career and after, so the gap between the money is even less relevant.

It's also pretty clear that St Kilda look after their past players with jobs post-AFL if they are worthy - look how many currently work at the club now.

I don't think there is anything to worry about here whatsoever. Maybe there might be if we significantly undervalue him for his next contract but we aren't there yet.

would essendon do 5 and 25 for 7 43 and marshall?

be a nice fall back if cats want to be cheapskates

of course roma would want to be open to it
I can't imagine Marshall would want to spend his final days at that dumpster fire.

He would just stay at the Saints if that was his only other option.

Wow , thats a nice thing to say.
We currently have a lot of old players working at the club that is true , does that mean its the best thing for the club ? I and just about everyone else rates Enright the best coach behind RTB

I'm sure Wilkes is not going anywhere but i was just saying its a life changing offer

That's not a great trade for us. 7+ 43 is not that much different to 5, so pretty much Marshall for a pick that will end up around 30 after compo, and probably closer to 40 after F/S and NGAs.

I would hope that Andrew Lovett isn't being given a job.

You would hope the club is only giving ex-players jobs that are worthy for them. I've seen nothing to the contrary in recent times.

Brendon Goddard struggled as Sandy coach but that list was terrible. He deserves an opportunity with a half-decent list before judgement is made.

Wilkie in talks with the club on an extension. Manager being a pos and using Bulldogs offer as leverage.
Not doubting your info...but...

I can't imagine the agent and Bulldogs being in collusion here to raise Wilkie's salary?

The agent only has Beau McCreery as another client. Nothing to really offer the Bulldogs.

I would imagine that in other scenarios agents and clubs could collude in this manner though.

if the Bulldogs have offered that much, then it's probably fair enough that the agent is using it in discussions for an extension...despite it putting pressure on our club.

Don't so sure.

All of the below are examples where players requested a trade and were denied and held to their contracts.
  • Rory Lobb - Contracted to Fremantle, requested trade back to GWS
  • Bobby Hill - Contracted to GWS, requested trade to Essendon
  • Josh Dunkley - Contracted to Western Bulldogs, requested trade to Essendon
  • Joe Daniher – Contracted to Essendon, requested trade to Sydney
  • Tom Papley – Contracted to Sydney, requested trade to Carlton
  • Tim Kelly – Contracted to Geelong, requested trade to West Coast.(got done the year after)
  • Bryce GibbsContracted to Carlton, requested trade to Adelaide. (got done the year after)
  • Cameron McCarthyContracted to GWS, requested trade to Fremantle. (got done the year after as he sat out entire 2016 season)
These are the ones I can think of but there are more.

If you are wilkie you are contracted for another two seasons.

As has been stated, just make Wilkie the 2026 Captain and give him the pay rise he deserves. He is a great media performer and never lets his team mates down onfield. We need to reward people like Callum who has been a revelation since coming to the club.

Not to ride you too hard, but how is it a life changing offer?

I’m sure he is being compensated very well before even taking in additional payments to do with leadership, media and KPI rewards.

Do you know his current remuneration? Or what the dogs are actually going to pay him, beside from media speculation?

Does 100k difference really change your life when you’re already earning vastly more than the lay person? Cal’s an accountant, I’m sure if there’s one thing he’s across aside from the oppo forward, it’s his finances. But you can’t take for granted the other non-monetary values he places on being at the saints.

Club has had Wilkie in a part time well remunerated gig at RSEA for a few years.
