2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th

Just caught up and wow! Plenty of work that has obviously been done behind the scenes. Most relevant points have already been said, but for me, this is where having a super experienced recruiter comes into play.

Is CMac a better prospect than Lindsay, Grij or whatever mid is available with our first next year?
How good is Fincher?
Is next years second rung (ie mid to late first round) shaping up as any good?

Basically this recruiting spree can also be seen as betting on drafts. We invested heavily last year. Sure there are good players every year, but if the Rymple thinks there will be busts all through this years first round, then why not invest in more known quantities like CMac and / or or Flanders? That also fast-tracks our timeline in line with both the NAS contract, and Wilkie / Sincs.

How do we get it done? Personally, I hope / think we keep Roma (unless they offer us SDK).

So for me Steele is very very quickly becoming the odd man out. None of his age, position or salary work with the potential incomings. Maybe its time for Ross to get on the phone to Mini.

WCE: in Steele. Out Ryan, 12
Haw: in 12. Out CMac
St.K: in Ryan, Cmac. Out Steele

Hawthorn get their first rounder back. Not only do we get both of CMac and Ryan done, but Steele's wage off the books also covers the JSOS / Aleer option. McCrae covers his role onfield (both cant play in the same midfield) and the captaincy goes to Wilkie. Then with TDK already locked in, that covers nearly all of our work. Last decision is whether to keep our original first? Or flick it onwards for Flanders?

Basically all comes back to Rymple's evaluation of this draft, and whether the CMac / Flanders typesare better bets than players like Lindsay, Grij, Mini pou etc. Evidence so far would say we are betting against this years draft
Why stop there, why not ask West Coast to throw in Harley Reid and Jake Waterman.

Steele would be lucky to be worth Ryan in a straight swap. Both of them are worth less than pick 12 by a long way.

He's only playing HF because they have Rowell, Anderson, Touk, Humphrey and about 15 1st rd academy kids rolling through there and Rioli and Noble at HBF who can only play one position. He would automatically be one of our best players and a genuine AA calibre operator. In a weak draft I would wager he turns out better than anyone we draft at that position and he's a proven commodity that makes the team better tomorrow. Yes it would be great if we could give up less, but I would be more than happy to give up a first. Don't let this season fool you, hes an absolute stud, GC just might be the worst spot for any midfielder right now with their insane depth.
I don't disagree, would be a great pickup. Don't think we need to give 12 tho, suns are fleeced constantly because they get gifted academy players and players that are fringe players are constantly offloaded for second and thirds

It was , until he broke his hand

As I said I think St Kilda poses more of a threat to gaining cam due to the academy link
No, what you said was that it’s not happening as it’s his agent trying to get him a better deal and the hawks rate him - probably in your side next week.

That also contradicts Sam Edmunds exclusive of: Saints been asked to present a trade proposal.

That would need to go direct to hawthorn. Not his agent.

Wasn’t meant to be

Cam is worth anywhere between 7-15, due more to the fact he is contracted, if he wasn’t, probably closer to 12-20

As much as you say the midfield was struggling, we’ve won 15 games, and we preferred to run fwds through there instead in the current iteration.

As I said previously, he struggled with his hand recovery, but I think that he is selected for the first final.

Has had a similar path to Ward, who this year became a best 22 lock, with Worpel out the door, Cam will be best 22 next year, no matter who comes in
Fair enough.

Struggling is probably not the right word but the definitely was a period when Newcombe was down, Worpel was out (and then was sub), Day was out and McKenzie still wasn't picked.

Hustwaite was picked through this time ahead of McKenzie, right?

And I also recall a game that both Sam Butler and Seamus Mitchell were selected together - which I just checked and McKenzie played VFL that week.

I understand both those players play different roles, but McKenzie could have been squeezed into the team in some form instead of them.

Finn Maginness is another one throughout the season.

The more I think about it, Hawthorn's actions this season really show they don't rate him or at least they think he is underperforming heavily.

correct

But St Kilda wouldn’t reasonably offer a deal that Hawthorn would accept

It doesn’t make sense for either party

Hence why it has only gone through management at this stage

Do you have inside connections with Hawk's list management?

In what world does it not make sense for us when we are moving to a more win now approach due to NWM and we could use a cmac type.

Cam was subbed a few times when coming back from his injury, but he needs to get a better tank would be the main point, starts well and fades consistently, but that comes with time

Cam played VFL when coming back from the injury/trying to get some form, no point bringing him in with none and expecting him to perform

I would be confident in Cam playing most games next year based on the incoming/outgoings anyway, but I can understand your points

CMac will cost us our first with maybe a 2nd coming back. Aleer will cost us that 2nd. Flanders would be next years first and Ryan next year's 2nd.
Our TPP would be so far over the cap you can say goodbye to Windy, Marshall and Steele along with others just to balance it.
So we will pay a king's ransom for one player that improves us in Flanders. None of the others improve us much at all.
TDK is no better than Marshall.
I like CMac but he is no better than Windy.
Flanders is an improvement on Steele due to his age.
Aleer is no better than Howard or Camaniti.
Ryan I don't see where he even fits in unless we know Henry will never play again.
I hope I am wrong but I think this could blow up in our faces and leave our salary stuffed for years.
Well you are a bundle of positivity aren’t you.

You can pour as much glitter on this as you like. At the end of the day he is a fringe player for a side that barely made the eight this year.
