2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

There is NGA/Academy Zone Access, and there is ACCESS.

St Kilda's access is a tiny pool of players. If you area club with access to large pool of players then you are
That maybe the case, but it hasn't stopped Saints from being equal most successful club in terms of producing NGA draftees.

And AFL are re-mapping the zones which will be announced soon and every club has put in its request for the changes it'd like in the zoning.

Bit of a feeling is us vs rest of the comp at the minute.

We have been throwing money at other players from other clubs, making other clubs pay more of their salary cap, bidding on f/s, academy’s making clubs pay full price (as per system) about to have the f/s academy’s removed from first round next year.

Recon we start banking picks for a bid on Fincher 🤣 and expect clubs to try do the same to us - throw money at our players.
The bubble is back, baby!

Totally agree, this wasn't my argument though. My argument was against the first round lockout. I am all for including taxes rather than discounts on first round prospects starting from next year. Don't have an issue with that whatsoever. Also dont allow clubs to stock pile more picks than available list spots and only have free agency compensation picks after the first round. Some of the changes I'd do.
Fair enough. Agree with you there.

Yes, everyone should pay an appropriate price for FS and NGA, including Saints. Not hard to fathom.
A fairer system would be paying 20% EXTRA, especially if you're packaging picks outside the round.

Makes no sense to get the privilege of jumping ahead of everyone AND getting to do it with a 20% discount.

I'd like to trust the club

Except there's the fact that professional sporting clubs constantly get this stuff wrong.
Really, is that simple. It’d be like me turning up to my doctor and telling him about medical procedures because people die in hospitals.

I’m pretty sure the Club doesn’t make player management decisions purely based upon media reports.

Fair play by the doggies. I think even they know that prying Wilkie off our list this trade period will be nigh on impossible.

But regardless of how genuine the negotiations are they have nudged the narrative back to St Kilda list management is chaotic and creating instability.

I think other clubs are pulling their hair out with the level of media the Saints are generating, and while it’s a split between they’re nailing it and they’re failing it, other clubs would be keen to lift their trade prospects by pulling others down.

The dogs supposed offer to Willie is at best opportunistic, and at worst reactive and desperate.

I’m keen to get through this trade period as quickly as possible now. We’ve identified our pieces. A young ruck trending up and in the cusp of his prime, an established high flying, elite kicking medium forward, a couple of athletic tall defenders, maybe perhaps an elite midfielder.

I’m keen to get through it and back to the nitty gritty of ironing out other areas of the club now. A proper functioning reserves team, injury management, talent development, so on.

Anyone else see this Bulldogs thing as just a big salty revenge sook cos they missed out on JSOS?
Nah, it's just Wilkie's manager aiming for an extension.

If the Bulldogs were seriously trying to extract him, they wouldn't do it thru the media, or give the exact contract details to Tom Morris.

I'm sure over the summer Wilkie will extend his deal, and get a nice chunk of cash for his troubles.

You can pick if Sharman’s kick will go for a goal or a point almost instantly. If it stays low, it’s a goal.
Kicked plenty high when he needs the distance from around 50 out.

His teammates consistently say you are wrong.
Steele is a funny one, everyone seems to expect him to leave but I hope he stays.

I think he has years left and if we’re making a push we’ll need him. Still a lot to play out but I’d need to see some impressive mids coming in before I’d think about trading him out.

Sounds like they were convinced they were going to land JSOS and are now scrambling for Plan B. Wonder how many letters they'll have to go through. If they keep putting in a whole week's diligence each time, they can get to F (as in Off) by trade time.
