2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th

Who would’ve thought that Nasiah’s re-signing would’ve had such an emotional effect on a man’s man such as The Rock 🙌

So TDK and JSOS are coming. If we also land the reported trade targets of Flanders, Ryan and Aleer while cutting Byrnes, Jones, Carroll, Arie and Heath (all seem likely to go) this is how I'd be selecting seniors and reserves from the squad:

B: Stocker, Howard, Tauru
HB: Sinclair, Wilkie, Silvagni
C: Windhager, Flanders, Wilson
HF: Hall, Sharman, Owens
F: Higgins, King, Marshall

Foll: TDK, Nas, Macrae
Int: Phillipou, Wood, Garcia, Clark, Butler

B: O'Connell, Aleer, Armstrong
HB: Hastie, Barrat, Travaglia
C: Hill, Steele, ***
HF: Said, Keeler, Henry
F: Ryan, Caminiti, Collard

Foll: Dodson, Boxshall, Dow

JSOS makes Aleer completely redundant. There's probably only one spot available between Henry, Ryan, Butler and Collard - with a forward line devoid of defensive pressure I'm giving that spot to Butler since he kicks as many goals as Ryan and provides the most pressure. If Henry gets back to his best then he gets a spot, but I'm worried that his injury might be career changing.

Wood edges out Hill for the bench wing/half forward spot thanks to his overhead marking - Windy and Wilson need to be prioritised with the starting roles.

Steele was borderline best 22 this year and looked absolutely cooked by the end. With Nas moving to the middle and Flanders coming in (along with Garcia's improvement), I don't see him in our best team moving forward. Macrae is a crab but more effective than Steele. Boxshall could get to the front of the line pretty quickly.

I'd like to see Hastie take Clark's spot but for now you'd have to start with Clark if fit.

You have a line somewhere, just like we all do.

If it was a true home ground Geelong would get every game there including the Grand Final.

My preference for GF would be either:

1. Rolling carnival like superbowl. 8 year schedule. 1,3,5,7 - MCG. 2- Adelaide. 4- Optus. 6- SCG or Stadium Aus. 8-Gabba.

Every other game wherever the home team prefers.

2. Best of 3 GF. At least 1 game at MCG regardless who plays. Game 1 or 2 depending whether a Victorian team finished higher on H&A ladder.

Also, every team should get 3 MCG games every year.

But we all know this is academic. There's an MCG deal until 2057.
Imagine watching your team get smacked twice in a GF.

Wilkiewould have had the first couple of years front loaded on his current contract as well.
Would be weak form.to take the front ended part then walk on the lesser two years.
Just remember how difficult Lyon, Allen and SoS are to deal with. That would surely have been taken into account by them.
There is zero chance he will be traded, unless something absolutely extraordinary is offered, and that wont happen.
Joffa, I agree with you. Your points are both valid and have the effect of increasing Wilkie’s trade value significantly.

But if the Bulldogs are desperate, and it looks as if they might be, then as unlikely as it may seem, they may very well offer something that is over the top.

We would be duty bound to at least listen to any proposal before rejecting it. That’s fair enough.

But in reality their offer to Wilkie, strategically leaked to the media the day after JSOS nominated Saints, is a panicky and desperate move. It has had the effect of making them look hopelessly reactive.

According to the media it took them a whole week to plan it. 😂 My hunch is that timeframe is generous.

Have the Bulldogs laid any groundwork to facilitate a trade? Both with St Kilda and other parties involved in a trade?

Have they assessed and assembled the necessary draft capital to enable a trade?

Are they willing to part with this draft capital?

Have they convinced Wilkie to publicly nominate them?

All reasonable questions which normally takes much longer than a week to fully align.

If the answer is NO to ALL of the above then it is what it appears to be. A face saving exercise.

The number crunchers are going to be busy at the end of 2027 with a bunch of players out of contract and a new cba coming in.
This is the thing though. If TDK’s contract doesn’t cater for scaling alongside the CBA then it can start to look very reasonable pretty quickly.

Could a club refuse to allow a player to do a physical at another club?
Good question.

I would assume there would be something in a player’s contract that would require permission for their club to agree.

I am unaware of a player unilaterally agreeing to a physical with another club while contracted. Maybe it has happened before?

A player’s injury status is part of the club’s IP that impacts on their performance on the field.

JSOS ranked 2nd in the league for 1v1 contests

Dogs ranked 2nd last as a team

The miss on JSOS was an almighty blunder by the dogs. WHY they didn't up their offer is beyond me (either tight asses or their cap is cooked)

But the journos say they have all the money in the world to go after Butters.

Did Aleer sleep with your partner or something? lol.

Like a dog with a bone.

The Saints aren't signing Aleer to be full back in the VFL, mate.

If they do not believe he is first choice at least initially, they wouldn't be acquiring him.

That is not the intention whatsoever. Yeah it might happen down the line if he is shit, but that has not happened yet so not worried about it.

I would assume that Tauru will move forward - also Howard, Silvagni don't have great injury records either.

Depth is great.

Other than that, a reasonable effort with your team IMO. Boxshall is likely in the senior side. Ryan will play ahead of Butler if both are head-to-head for a spot and fit IMO.

EDIT: Missed Steele in the VFL - not happening either. He is either playing mainly seniors or is at a different club.

Yes.

In hindsight they should have offered 5 x $1m.

Well overs but it probably would’ve got the job done.

Imported Sri Lankan tea. Fresh tea leaves.
Interestingly my Sri Lankan mate brought me back a big bag of tea leaves from Sri Lanka and he said the tea might have a bit of Smokey flavour as there had been bushfires around the plantation. It was Smokey and it was beautiful tea 🫖

FWIW my basic maths from the trading board.

After this trade period is done and dusted, do people think we will still have our first rounder from this year ? Our future first rounder ?
Or both are gone ?

Best tea in the world. Exquisite.

My partner is Sri Lankan. She makes an amazing pot of tea.

If another club is coming in and offering Wilkie $1m a year he has every right in the world to go back to the club and ask to renegotiate his deal. If it happened with my employer it's sure as shit what I would do! He's got maybe five more years of great earning potential before he retires, and he's got the right to try and earn every cent he can to set himself and his family up for the future. I hope we can afford to come to the table and pay him a bit closer to what he's worth, because he is St Kilda through and through.

And if his athleticism starts to drop away from its below avg position and becomes a liability can the club then renegotiate his wage in a couple of years?

The commentary around this seems very lopsided.

He has every right to negotiate, but at the end of the day you sign a contract that has fixed terms. Its hard to compare to everyday life because rarely if ever do you sign a 4 or 5 year contract with your employer.

I think my example the other day is still relevant, once a contract is signed neither the club or player can demand a change to it. Obviously they can ask, but neither are within their right to expect or demand it.
