2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Good player but the fact he's AA now shits me.

He was better or at worst just as good last year and he wasn't even in the picture for AA.
This is why the AA nom is so flawed as a takent gauge. Its as much about places available and other players who play the same position.

Of course Battle was as good or better last year, but he didn't get nominated because nominees Andrews, Collins, Sicily, and final team members Weitering, Blakey and McGovern were deemed to have been better years as tall defenders. This year Sicily, Weitering, McGovern and Blakey haven't had the same impact and so Taylor, Battle and Andrews get the gig with Collins nominated.

Same as people who say TDK has never won a single AA. How many ruckmen have? Gawn has had the main gig sewn up for years, Xerri, Grundy and others have had nominations. It’s one position, so youre asking that person to essentially be the world number one.

Marshall has never had a nomination either.

AA is just a popularity contest, and others dropped out of the race this year and Wlkie is a Saints player and has had his time in the sun for such a short key defender.

Paddy Dow is doing well to get another contract. I'd have thought he'd at least have to wait to see who we brought in before putting own to paper

As of next season I'd like to see Hall, Nas & Pou in the guts full-time.
Ideally Henry & Wilson take the wings.
I actually prefer Windy in the backline, where he can tag the oppo small forwards
His general kicking is an issue though, not bad/not great.
I seriously hope we rookie  Jackson Voss, think we could use his precise kicking in our backline
He's built like Hall abit actually.
Think Pou has a fair bit of work ahead of him to lock in a midfield spot. Needs to get his body right first of all obviously.

I know he had 4 good games at the end of 2024, but Nas, Hall and Windy have all shot past him, not to mention Macrae still probably deserving a spot on merit.

I think Pou will need to play more of a forward role and like a couple of other, spend some time in the VFL to keep getting him that midfield exposure.

He's only 20, still has plenty of time.

If he does a full pre season I think he's ahead of Hall and Windy for a midfield spot.

Yeah don't get this one at all. Actually seemed like an obvious first batch delisting to me.

Maybe its a bit of a compassionate contract given the bloke has been in the wars. But I just don't see him being an AFL level player.

If Leek was coming across to us on a 4 year contract worth $450k pa then I doubt there'd be any supporters showing concern. Our expectations for him are so much higher based on his price.

Its not like he was an Irishman who has never picked up a footy before when he was selected as a mature aged player.

He was in the Adelaide NGA as a 16 year old, for him to still be so raw and seemingly unsure of positioning is scary, not in a good way.

His contract is not worthy of his achievements thus far and I am of the opinion that someone like him, at 24, would absolutely unsettle the list because if his contract.

Its just natural as a supporter base to think this way, think about the expectations on Travaglia vs Boxshall. The other one was Finn, he didn't want the expectations, unfortunately for better or worse, Aleer is under that microscope unless the reported figures are wildly incorrect.

Nah, dont agree, l think those 4 games showed how good he is in the midfield
Injuries obviously stopped him from being in there this season
And playing in the two's, that's sacrilege & not or rarely going to happen again.

Apparently according to 7News the "Fallout to Saints' big-money recruiting strategy continues"

Excuse me but what fallout? and how is it continuing? Haven't heard of a single player come out and request a trade yet.
had to check back 12 pages to see if someone else had spotted this, what absolute garbage, can you imagine them reporting it that way if we talked to sdk or holmes?

who is that nuffy By Glenn Valencich anyway?

another rucci?

where is the similar reporting re 2 carlton players a giant and an eagle heading to the saints?why are they paying the price?

I don’t really see Sharman as a True CHF.

I think we line up with:

2 genuine talls:
King & Marshall/Caminiti

2 medium talls:
Owens & Sharman

2 Smalls:
Higgins & Hall

Ryan off the bench and that’s probably your 7.
Factor in Tauru possibly getting time at CHF eventually leading to a permanent role there

With Leek Aleer nominating saints, along with JSOS, do we think that means Marshall is more than likely traded ?
Now have Hammer, Wilkie, Aleer and JSOS

The Vikings forward ?
With King, Sharman, Owens?

Hammer backup ruckman with TDK needs a rest ?
Or Keeler ?

Thoughts ?

Or keep Marshall ?

I think the preference is to keep Marshall unless we are given an almighty juicy offer.

Improved yes, AFL level quality? No.

Again, i want him to stay but of all the comings and goings in the last few years, he is a very replaceable player and that is why you don't have the hysteria around him that we did with Nas

Also, have a think about who is pursuing him? Dees, Roos, Dons... say absolutely no more. He has a mountain of work to do (as do many others), but disposal is the #1 trait needed in the comp these days. He is a liability in that sense.
I would agree with you, but only up to a point. For the first third or so of the year his kicking and lack of general composure with the ball was awful and frustrating. He steadied though, and by the end of the season he was playing his role much better and doing some very good things.
I hope he stays...he has good chemistry with our better players, and you can tell that they trust him. He is not the bolt you want to loosen with where we want this team to go, both in terms of onfield success and off-field.

I'd trade Marshall for SDK or for 2025, 26 and 27 first rounders (given that all are likely to be late teens picks at best).

If Geelong don't want to overpay, give the dual ruck combo a year to work. Don't lose much giving him up for a 2nd next year over a late first this year.

That is true. But Butler did not spend too much time in the team. Not sure what Ryan’s pressure is like but he will offer us more in terms of midfield rotation, creativity and goals. Butler spent a lot of time missing when in the game.
All well and good if our aim is to replicate the pressure we exerted in 2025, but i think the Punter might be hoping for us to aim more for better even than our pressure when it has been at its best recently which definitely includes Dan Butler or at least the Dan Butler of a couple of years ago.

I think we need to retain Marshall for the simple factor that he is cover for King
Oh & to not allow Geelong to keep their premiership window open.
It would have to be a extraordinary offer, to let him go

I know its been a long time since then, and obviously things can change very quickly (and did), but does anyone else think Rowan isn't going anywhere?
Tony74 did say back at the end of July that Nas and Ro were going nowhere, and he hasn't been wrong yet. Obviously Geelong are still in finals and Ro met Chris Scott but this story has just been pushed and pushed by the Geelong Minister of Propaganda Mitch Cleary for months more than anyone else.

Not to mention its a very easy narrative to push, Geelong are a destination club that needs a ruck while Saints signed a ruck.

yep Caminiti needs to be upgraded which I believe counts as one of our 3 mandatory national draft picks

in terms of the primary list (McLennan and Boyd were rookies) I believe it currently looks like

7 in: TDK, JSOS, Aleer*, Ryan*, ND1, ND2 (Fincher?), ND3 (Caminiti)
--
2 out: Webster, Cordy
6 out of contract: Heath, Jones, Byrnes, Carroll, Schoenmaker, Windhager

assuming we keep Windy, we will need to delist or trade all the others to have space for the players who have nominated

of course that can change if Windy/Marshall/Steele etc are traded. but in any case if we want to add Flanders or Mackenzie it will mean moving on one of them
Crouch comes off the rookie list as well.

Just out.

""Swann, who has spent his first six weeks as AFL football boss thrashing out a series of adjustments to the game, will have his team’s recommendations heard by the commission in Grand Final week.
Asked if the Grand Final would mark the last time a coach has to tell a player he would be a substitute, Swann said: “Probably. Yep.” ""

So with 5 on the bench that makes a TDK - Roma Combination more viable.

Says we are going to revise our offer to Windy to keep him, Melbourne has to wait for coach to come in before approval to go after him, says initially Windy was looking to go but has revised recently and Nas re-signing helped, Moose is the big man they reference he could could join to Melbourne, said Marshall looking at Geelong and his $950K would go off our books, and simply says at end that St Kilda has no interest in trading Wilkie (Lol).
Not sure why? we offload both Heath & Marshall

and they are connected how? You are conflating independent events to suit your narrative. It seems that you are arguing that by getting in Ryan and Aleer (who btw makes no sense), we are not in a position to pay windy more than we consider he is worth and that if we didn't bring those two in we could? Not sure how that argument stacks up in logic.
It's a shift in direction. We've spent RTB's years developing our young core. Windy has been part of that. The last six games of this year he averaged 25 disposals and IMO started to turn his potential into more than solid contributions. He was given #2 and has been held up as the heart and soul type player of our developing team. But if he goes, we're now willing to let him walk in favour of importing two B graders, one of whom is nearly thirty. It's a shift in priorities. If Ryan and Aleer were proven players with years of quality footy ahead of them, then okay. But Aleer appears to be hot/cold at best and Ryan is nearly 30. Doesn't make any sense to me. I'd rather we pay Windhager more and keep developing our young core together rather than importing B graders at his expense.

Don't agree. I used to think Marshall could be a fwd but if the choice is Caminiti or Marshall as a fwd I'm picking Caminiti every time.

I'm hoping like hell that the Cats don't win the premiership just so they'll keep chasing Marshall.

The other thing I'm hoping for is for King and Henry to stay fit so that they'll have to play Owens through the midfield.

Higgins King Ryan

Sharman Caminiti Henry

Swann confirmed the AFL was still looking at ways to tilt the centre bounce back in favour of the athletic ruckman.
“There’s a couple of options, but I’m working with the umpires and talking to clubs about how we do that,” he said.
“On round numbers, over the last three years it used to be four out of every five times they’d jump at each other. Now it’s four out of every five times they walk across the line and wrestle. It’s not good for the game. We want them to jump.
“Are they allowed to cross the line at all? Do we have a little wedge they’ve got to stand in so they have to effectively face each other and jump? We’ll work that through.”

Getting both of Aleer & JSOS is abit baffling
Unless they see JSOS as the swingman & play him forward more?
