2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th

I think them being pleased with chasing a player that will not be traded under any circumstances is baffling.

"Yeh the saints are thrilled to be chasing Harley Reid in spite of him being contracted and West Coast demanding NAS, King and TDK in a trade package".

Sounds like eutopian thinking.

I dont hate it but rotating backmen through the ruck is really hard structurally.
He’s not going anywhere near the ruck.

PERSONALLY I’d let Roma go for a second rounder. We don’t have one, we need some points for Fincher and ultimately IN MY OPINION Roma has zero value in our team outside a backup and if TDK needs a spell then I’d rather be getting games into Dodson and Keeler anyway.

Noting the above I don’t think the club would accept anything short of Geelongs first and that’s also absolutely fine, I’d back them to make the right call.

If Roma wants out then IN MY OPINION we should let him go, it’s shitty practice to keep him playing twos while his $1.4-$1.7 replacement is playing (and no I don’t think Roma can play as a CHF or FF)

If he wants to stay and the club thinks he can do the hybrid role then by all means give it a crack.
Let’s remember, however, that Roma has been paid the lions share of his contract front loaded, so not that I’m saying he would, but if it came to the point he wasn’t our number 1 ruck, then so be it.

Another reason why Cats should have to pay up big time for him.

The 2026 out of contract list is thin from what I can see.

Caminiti, Sharman, both Cat B Irish boys, Butler, Dodson, Howard, Keeler, Said, Stocker, Wilson and now Dow. Be a few in there that are feeling the pressure to have a big off-season and fight for their list spot.
I wouldn't call 12 players, more than a quarter of our list, "thin".

Sam McClure via The Tradies podcast - Windy going to stay. Was out the door to North a few weeks ago but Ross has won him back.

Mitch Cleary disagrees and believes he hasn't made up his mind but if he leaves, it will be Melbourne.
Rince and repeat media BS. Ross has won Windy back my arse. Sos has upped the offer a bit and Windy's manager has less leverage now. Job done.

they are introducing the last touch rule next season.

Which will Limit boundary throw ins.
it won't really, modelling I saw shows an extra 2 free's a game over what we currently have

Also Mitch Cleary another source that says that Marshall AND Steele’s deals have effectively been paid up. Not alot left the next 2 years.

So its the beams issue all over again. Theyre trying to get paid again.

Which means their trade cost has just gone up.

If its 1.5m a season. You can't begrudge Wilkie looking at leaving.
Of course you can. You sign a contract for X amount of years at $X, and you expect the club to honour that contract if you're injured.

Players have the right to request a trade, but in no world should they expect to receive one.

Perhaps Wilkie should put himself on single year deals moving forward.
