2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

I’m very impressed the way we’ve managed our salary cap.

Not having lots of A grade stars on our list has obviously made it a bit easier to manage the cap and now it’s our time to shine.

When you think about how we’ve been paying under the cap and saving our money for a serious war chest I think we’ve done pretty well to stay competitive and stay around mid table.

We absolutely have every right to be throwing around the money that we’ve managed in our cap.

Elite from SOS and the team. Very impressed

I don't think we keep NAS if we proper tanked and bottomed out this year. Finishing 10th-14th every year is frustrating but we aren't a club that can afford to bottom out because it's so much harder for smaller clubs to come back from. Just ask North.

I just hope the patience is rewarded in the next few years!

Steele will not take us anywhere as he has already shown..had a small period where he was playing like an A grader, but is basically a C to B atm. Yeah he tackles but not doing a lot of damage with them....time to move past Steele imo.
He has been injured this season. Saints should have rested him over gone in for surgery .

It's amazing to me that Hawthorn don't cop more scrutiny. Yes they played Carlton like a fiddle in the pick swap, but recruiting veterans Barrass and now Merrett/Petracca for high end draft picks is really mortgaging your future. That makes sense if you're on the cusp of a flag, but I'm not sure they are.
They might be on the cusp, if they beat Adelaide in Adelaide. Cause after that is all at the MCG

My Carlton friend - u have created an inflationary spiral that will fxxk the whole competition!

Yes TDK got the godfather offer. Ps early in the season TDK was the second coming of John Nicholls. Late in the season “you have blown up your salary cap for an ordinary player!”

SOS jnr was going to Pies, Dogs or Saints - for whatever reason he wanted out of there

Curnow wants out - looks like he can’t stand Voss

Maybe they should have just stuck with the old brown paper bag like old SOS got from Elliott?

Old Power Club who are now struggling for relevance big time - hi Bombers as well!

Nas is a HB maybe plays full time mid but I imagine he'll stay an impact player.
Windhager looks wing/tag
Hall again is a brilliant high half forward and probably runs on ball to impact like DeGoey.
Phillipou maybe a full time mid but again potentially a part time impact starting forward. Already looking injury prone.
Garcia- should develop into a nice inside mid.
Boxshall- already shown bit but not played much on ball yet. Project player.
Trav looks like a HBF who may progress to a mid.

To me Garcia looks like he pushes Steele out and plays next to Macrae. That third mid/first receiver mid maybe Steele, Phillipou or Flanders I guess. Still a spot there and probably need rotations for the bench or second position types.
We need pace out of the middle. Really need Naz and Garcia to take their centre clearance work to another level.

The fact is, we're bringing in 4 new players on generous long-term deals, and they'll be 29, 28, 27 and 25 by next year's finals series and have 3, 4, 7 and 3 years left on their deals.

Perhaps prelim next year is a little overcooked, but if St Kilda hasn't played in a semi-final by the end of 2027 it'll be totally fair to question the current moves.
How do you measure where we finish without making the big moves to compare?
Imo you just have to make the moves when you can and build the best you can with what you got. Give ourselves the best opportunity to contend but there's no guarantees you win even with the exact formula.

I want us to be shit most of the year, get to be the first to play off for wildcard round and win through to a premiership just so he can feel like he's going to sink the boot only for the boot to swing up and kick him in the head.
Is that happening? I've wanted wild card round for so long! It's a fantastic idea.

You’re taking the piss here surely?

If he’s playing anywhere next year (and that’s a massive ****ing if) hell be on $80k not $800k
JUH and his manager are watching contracts sky rocket and are conspiring to get a piece of the action. Lol.

Not worth it IMO. Keep our resources focused on the business of development not rehabilitation.

Expect him to bounce back next year
2nd year blues
Any insider knowledge haha

Yeah hes a bloody good footballer, very professional. From a great family. Has actually got great football genes on both sides of his family.
Was hoping we landed him, we had the pick after you and we'd have taken him without a doubt .

JUH would be lucky to be paid whatever the AFL minimum wage is. No club would offer a cent more.

Yes.

Obviously take this with as much salt as needed but 100% we contacted the Dogs last trade period, did our own investigation and whatever was found we backed off immediately.

This year it’s gotten even worse.

Even now any club can get him for pick 80+ in the draft and the Dogs will pay a decent heft of his salary (as much as their willing to do to pay him out) and still no club is going to touch him.
If you aren’t committed or able to train then your contract should be able to be terminated after a process has been followed involving AFL HQ.

It's pie in the sky, but if JUH was offered with a substantial amount of salary paid for a future 1st (in one of the upcoming, heavily compromised drafts), you'd have to think about it wouldn't you?
Yeah thought about it for a Milli second , now FO JUH you wanna be gangster
