2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th

I also do wonder if we're locking Flanders away quickly to prevent the potential scenario that GC/Melb try and turn Flanders head to unlock the Petracca trade if it remains deadlocked? Combined with ranking Sam as an elite player, and not rating this draft - it makes sense you just get the deal done, particularly if you're working on multiple other moves

Also it's not pick 7, realistically it's pick 10

I initially wanted something back for 7 but after watching Flanders late season highlights I was thinking, our pick will end up at 11 or 12. Is that player going to give us better value than Flanders who will make our midfield better from day one and also play another 150-200 games for us?
If we have to cough up 7 so be it. I won't be complaining when we go through next year undefeated.

I really don’t understand why people think pick 7 in a historically weak and compromised draft, for a 24yo who’s just about to enter his prime and was borderline elite in 2024 when he played in his preferred position and wasn’t playing injured like this season, is crazy. And he was in demand, there were 4 other teams who wanted him. I was told I was delusional and ‘thank god you’re not the list manager’ for suggesting it would get done for 7.

He’s contracted, if GC say they want 7 and aren’t willing to give up any picks in return (they need all the picks they can get to match bids) then that’s what we need to do. Same way people are saying we shouldn’t negotiate with Geelong and we make the demands because Marshall is contracted. I’m more than happy to part with 7 for a guy who’s going to make our midfield significantly better from day 1 next season.
Exactly. We are all hairy chested about our contracted players, but cry when we give, in my view, a fair price for a young contracted midfield that Gubby just said they consider elite.
It is really the same from every supporter group every year. Every trade has to ream the opposition and we only need to trade shit for contracted players.

WC sounds like they will play hard on Ryan
Yet they're giving away their compo pick (if not their 1st from the hawks) for a back pocket who is one head knock away from retirement.

I really don't rate what West Coast are doing with their list.

When you're a mile off the pace, I reckon you need to invest everything in the draft. Yes you need some mature bodies to help them develop, but this is where you should be targeting Macrae and Steele types with your 3rds and 4ths and talk retiring guns into playing for one or two more seasons in a player coach role.

Q for mods: how do you delete a like when it's not what was intended to be the response?

I don't think pick 7 is fair for Ned without something coming back.
I reckon we might be doing another trade with Gold Coast and overpaying for Flanders will be factored in to that.

Just a hunch.

Gubby did indicate there may be more surprises to come.
