2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th
AFL Draft: Wednesday, November 19th - Thursday, November 20th

Our midfield depth now: Nas, Flanders, Macrae, Steele, Pou, Garcia, Windy, Dow, Wilson, Trav (potential) and Box. With Hall (wouldn't be surprised if he spends more time in mid), Henry, and potentially Higgo being able to rotate through.

Assuming Steele stays (which looking unlikely) and Jones goes.

We are looking pretty good now!
Good depth but think we are lacking another A grader in there.

I never get that “hating” a player thing. People generally don’t even know the person behind the player.
It’s such a very strong emotion.
Disappointed in etc is one thing.
But hating?
I hate other players. Selwood was one for example. It wasn't the knee dropping for frees. It was his whinging when things didn't go his way. He was great when all was rosy. But when things didn't go his way, he was a whinging little skank. Entitled little bitch. Detested him. Easy to hate. Take your point about not knowing them off the field. Still hate em but.

It was the Bontempelli factor and old man being a supporter since 1962. He wouldn't treat Billings badly if he met him on the street and would probably get along with him. It's just that I think Billings personified the decades of disappointment and failure of the entire club for him.

Pick 7 for Flanders is way overs when you consider Geelong traded 17 for Bailey Smith.

I'd prefer we keep drafting. Trading 1st round picks is something I'm generally opposed to, unless you're getting someone truly elite.

You mean the same Smith coming off an ACL and carrying metric tonnes of baggage?

Bailey smith was (and still is) a coke head, coming off an acl and uncontracted. Stop harping on about it FFS

He was contracted for 2 more years, sniff was out of contract coming off an acl with a ton of baggage, I’m fairly certain you have never watched Flanders he’ll be our best mid by far next year

Pick 7 in this year's draft is probably the equivalent of pick 42 last year.

Anyone think something is up? Why has this trade gone through so quick, why were we so happy to get rid of pick 7 so quick and easy?

Nah.
Tom mitchell from swans to hawks was a big deal at the time.
Got done and dusted for pick 14 or something on day one i think?

Just a case of 2 clubs being reasonable in their asking and offering and no interest in grandstanding.

Normally I agree u take your first pick to the draft every time, but this year feels particularly biege.

You are generally going well if u get 2 AFL standard players in any given draft.

Look at it over 2 years. Last year I reckon we drafted 4 kids who will not only make it, but potentially be very good AFL players in Tauru, Box, Dodson and Trav.

We basically pulled off 2 good drafts in 1 year.

We got Box in the 40s, is he worse than some of the projected top 10's this year? I don't think so.

**** that degenerate though. He comes cheap because he's an absolute w***er.

The moment Geelong stop winning he's gone. They won't put up with his shit.

Edit : I also generally prefer going to the draft but this scenario with a compromised and weaker draft + our current list profile and other factors make it the right time.

Gotta consider opportunity cost and development gamble. 24 year old mid that directly fills a need on Day 1 versus a gamble that might pan out in years

By this logic then Oliver must be worth 2 top 10 picks...
