2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th
AFL Draft: Wednesday, November 19th - Thursday, November 20th

Might text trade radio and make up a rumour about a dogs star

Just for more tian melts
Freijah is upset at the dogs placing him on the trade table for Wilkie.

West coast has sensed the issue and are offering him 1.1/6 years.

Joel is flying over tomorrow to have a chat.

Really don't think there is much difference. Windy used the North offer to bump the contract from 2 to 4 years. List managers had to act.

Wilkie had his head turned by an unsolicited monster offer by a desperate club.
What is the new potential.captain worth to the Saints? Saints could have just sat tight and said contracted, wait two years.
But is that what a club with good culture does to one of its best and most durable players?
It has been said for months this would happen and it sends a positive message to the playing group, we will look after you.
And that culture is bearing fruit. NAZ was offered 2.5 x 2 by Port ( then lesser about 1.3 over the next six). He took 2.0 x 2 so a mill less, backing himself for a bigger pay day. Windy took a lesser deal than the North offer both in years and money by a fair bit.
Now Wilkie has taken substantially less to stay. Let's say and extra three for a mill for all 5 years. Reports Bulldogs offered 1.5 x 5 ( my contacts said more like 1.2) so the higher end he took 2.5 mill less ( or a mill less if my figures of 1.2 is correct).
Three players with big and higher contracts in front of them from rival clubs decides to stay at the Saints. This only happens if the culture and atmosphere at a club is healthy and everyone is pulling in the same direction.

This is good clubs do. The next couple of years, if all goes well, should see that culture maintained and players wanting to come to the Saints not on the overs we paid but to play at a relevant and serious club on market rates.

That seems the strategy. Will it work? History would say odds are against it, however the club is having a red hot crack at changing the perceptions and the fortunes of this club, one that has a sleeper base of support that could match Geelong and Hawthorn if not Collingwood and Richmond. 17000 new members ( granted a publicity stunt but very successful) shows the sleeper Saints support.
We start to succeed on a regular basis and watch the crowds grow. I want to see the Saints supporters as obnoxious and smug as Hawk fans and as disliked by the competition as any club in the league.
**** 'em all. As the President says ' we aren't out to make friends'.
Our latent supporter base is very significant......if we can activate that (and Nas seems to be the key at this stage, although I am hopeful we can move past relying on individuals in the near future), then the AFL will start scheduling our games in friendly timeslots to maximise eyeballs and sponsors will start to beat a path to our door!

That would be perfect and Tony74 has hinted there is still more in the pipeline. Dan Butler's name came up this morning, perhaps he wants to be reunited with Hardwick, they definitely need another small forward.

If we were to lose/trade Butler where do we find then find a replacement? We obviously have Collard and Said on the list, Collard could be great or a bust and we have hardly seen Said play.

There will be a few options available in the draft some are goal kicking mids who will start forward -

Mid/Small forwards: Sam Cummins, Jevan Phillipou, Fred Rodriguez, Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves , Felix Kneipp
Small forwards: Lachy Dovaston, Talor Byrne, Latrelle Sumner-Pickett

All would be a reasonable options, although half will be first round options where we most likely wont have a pick.

Barring any disastrous injuries, I have a great feeling about 2026

The pressure is going to be on to perform, and the list will be in the best shape it’s been in for 16 years

+ whatever the **** Tony is alluding towards with his latest post

Makes sense considering the flow of players between us lol.
Where are the Dogs on the table?
Do teams rank higher for approaching more players or something?

I'm sure its based on some kind of champion data metric ;)

I didnt actually hear the segment tbh, I just saw the list on socials so I can't speak to their logic. They only had the top 10 with the saints being 10th. Doggies not on the list surprisingly🤔

Looking forward to seeing their exodus ladder 😅

I don’t think the players should choose the captain.

I’d rather see that fall to the coach.

If they chose to the coaches could manipulate those who nominate for the position eg suggest to Steele that he should not nominate in 2026 and give someone else the chance.

No one is "defending him", but asking people to honestly think back to every private chat you've ever had and see if it would pass the 2025 social acceptability test before attacking him

99.99% of us would fall.

10-20% of us would have private chats that would make Andrew Zimmern feel sick in the guts.
Whataboutism. We aren't public figures. I have never referred to a gay womanin such derogatory terms as ' she has her licker licence'. So homophobic it is scarcely believable
I have never publicly outed a public figure without her approval and before she had come out to her family.
This might be the way others talk about gay people, maybe it is cool for gen y to speak like that, but the lack.of respect and outright hostility toward this woman is beyond reproachful.
But you do what you do if it fulfils a need.

The sub should be abolished but the bench should remain at four.

When they bring the sub back it will be in addition then it will go then it will be brought back...

TL; DR: In 2050 there will be 16 players on the bench
To be fair…

The change has been brought about because of concussions.

There won’t be a similar change for any other injury. It’s to ensure that if a player is removed that they can still use 4

People need to go and watch the series The Hack (Stan) to see the affect of corrupt and misleading journalism has on society as a whole. Rupert Murdock was controlling countires with his print media tactics and the AFL media are no different with the affect they have on the public perceptions.

And if there are two concussions on the same team?

Injuries suck, but they are unavoidable in the game. A concussion is a brain injury that comes with a mandatory minimum unavailability period.

Something else will come along and the bench will get further expanded. Four was fine.
