2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Pretty poor tbh if we had made the commitment to him.

Our name will be mud with his management group.

Feel a bit sorry for the long onion.
His management group also manage Wade Derksen.
Given they’ve failed to broker a deal for two of their players to their preferred location I suspect they’ve got their own back yard to worry about.

Just a suggestion,
Is this an inside word or your view?
I think Geelong would want more but we don't really have much more draft capital unless we cook ourselves for next year's draft. I think Geelong would want us to facilitate a three way deal with Carlton.

Geelong get: Rowan Marshall & Charlie Curnow
St Kilda get: Sam De Koning
Carlton get: Pick 18, Geelong F1st, St Kilda F2nd

Leek Aleer is back on the open market after St Kilda informed the Giants they no longer wish to trade for the key defender.

It’s understood the Giants were surprised at the decision and will weigh up their options whether they put a new contract to Aleer.

🤔

We're offering to pay him circa 700k x4.
That's not chump change (despite the recent 25% salary cap increase)... so clearly we don't think he's steaknives.

F2 isn't all that far off the mark if we are ok with spending an F3.

But I don't think the trade pricetag is the issue at all.

I think we have been looking for a way to worm out of signing him since the day we landed jsos.
We've been into aleer for ages- and jsos landed in our lap late.

We've got the cap space for both, but with jsos in- aleer has gone from 'essential' to 'nice to have'.

We don't need to spend 700k a year on 'nice to have'.
Especially when we have the flying viking to play in his exact same spot on 100k.

Us baulking at gws asking for F2 is just us trying to make them the scapegoat.

FYI- Aleer will be fine, he's had plenty of other clubs interested.
Sure, he probably wont get the 700k x 4 we promised him, but he'll be fine.
I agree. We can posture all we like, but a future second is a perfectly reasonable ask for Aleer.

It's not a good look at all and we won't want to make it a trend. The pres said we weren't out here to make friends but you can't go pissing off player agents regularly, they are the middle men and you need them on your side to be able to get players and deals done.

From a list perspective it makes sense, especially if Marshall really does stay - we've already got Wilkie, JSOS, Tauru, Dougal staying and potentially Caminiti down back. Young James Barrat coming through as well.

Three possible explanations I can think of

1. GWS under pressure Salary Cap wise trying to negotiate how much of Oliver's pay packet they take on. We are taking advantage in negotiation by removing our offer for Aleer to try and get them to give him up for a bag of chips or go to PSD - Possible but end of the day Aleer will get interest elsewhere Dogs North etc, would need Aleer to be all in and prepared to run the gauntlet.

2. SDK is on and Aleer is now not needed - Would need Curnow to Geelong to be real to force Geelong to look at this

3. Our never ending Salary Cap space is tighter than we stated and we had to make a sacrifice particularly if we were relying on Steele leaving and we now think that is not happening - Hopefully not this

SOS, Gubby and Ross say and do certain things for specific reason.
Walking away from Aleer shows Geelong if they don’t come to the table we’re happy to get up and walk away.
Serious football club.

I do wonder how much of it is posturing to Geelong and West Coast.

It could backfire on us though, they know we wouldn't want to walk away from another trade. Especially Ryan.

Yes he did, but as a last resort.

Maybe we will walk him to the PSD. If we’re still keen.

Or maybe we are using this as an excuse to get out of any deal. After all Aleer has nominated us.

Maybe JSOS changed the landscape and we are using it as an excuse to get out. Giant's starting negotiations high and we just going--"unreasonable, bye!" Though it is not the greatest look for players nominating us.

F2 for Aleer, oh dear
Obviously GWS haven't had an eye on the current proceedings with us
Cheerio off we go, to find another fish
Great move
Not harsh on Aleer, GWS have offered him a contract, does'nt have to move interstate now.
Not our fault others want to be rediculous with their demands
We are'nt aka Flanders.
