2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th
AFL Draft: Wednesday, November 19th - Thursday, November 20th

Everyone is happy.

The "tell the world we back up" group is happy the club is not getting screwed any more.

The "this is why we have 1 premiership in 1000 years" group can point to continued incompetence.

The paid media who love nothing more than to sink the slipper into the St Kilda Football Club are especially happy this morning. Marc McGowan in The Spencer St Soviet this morning called us "despicable". Good grief.

So everyone is happy doing what they do best and like most.

Actually think that doing things for optics instead of building a winning list is more likely to make a premiership harder to achieve. Ruthless and unemotional decision making with an eye on the desired outcome should be their job.

Is the list better with Aleer at that wage and draft cost? I don’t think so. We should walk away at that point. We aren’t a charity.

McCartney got asked about Derksen and if there would still be a spot on the list for hi now that the melbourne offer was pulled - was nowhere near as scathing on melbourne as he was on us with Aleer... it's literally the same situation.

I just reckon the Giants asked for way too much, went into the discussion knowing their initial demand was crazy and expected us to negotiate down, we didn't, and now they have egg on their face because they've been critical about us walking away, so they can't do the same to Aleer now.

Don't mind the Vol-Kane-O's take on us and Marshall, Ro's contested marking is probably his biggest strength and is definitely that Darcy Cameron type of ruck who could genuinely play 50% forward. Geelong need a ruck, we don't need to trade Ro, has shown he can share the responsibilities in the past.

Look at rotating through Phillipou and Henry as well ith some midfield time for each. Fellas I'm gettin a little chubbed...

Some guy on the Leek Aleer thread thinks that a third club should take Aleer, pay him 200k a year, and effectively sue St Kilda for 500k a year to make up the difference ithe wage it offers and the wage offered and then reneged on by the Saints. This is just some random Carlton guy, and I think it is the worst take I've ever seen on here.

The Saints are making people lose their minds this year. Like you can just see the cognitive dissonance melting the brains of opposition supporters (particularly of the Blues and Dogs) in real time. This has been the most bizarre trade period. You've got huge names like Petracca, Merrett, and Curnow on the board, but all anyone can seem to talk about is the Saints. And it is overwhelmingly negative, performative, and self-righteous. Just a whole bunch of trade Karen's getting up on the most bizarre of high horses.

Have we ever received this much attention, outside of some kind of off field scandal?

Let's face it the majority of the AFL world can't cope with our club having any modicom of success, whether that be during trade week or onfield.

The fact that we have attracted players from 3 different clubs and changed the entire player contract land scapes scares the sh*t out them.

So of course they are going to be yelling from the roof tops when there is an event to sink the boots in! SOS, Gubby and co are not stupid they know exactly what they were doing and why.

I have reminded myself why I usually have a total media blackout in season. The over reaction imbecile approach to AFL media catering for the angry, unthinking, lowest common denominator.

Think it’s time to reinstate it for me.

6 days to make a life changing decision when your options have likely been limited.

Everyone on here would be filthy if that happened to them.

Barrel is saying we offered a 2nd, but wanted something back. If a 3rd or 4th round pick is the hill we've chosen to die on, thats concerning.

I actually am expecting to hear more to the story. I don't think we would have been dicks for no reason, its only the presently available information that suggests we're in the wrong. I'm open minded though.
The deal between St Kilda and GWS has fallen through, not the deal between St Kilda and Aleer.
GWS have asked for a second round pick for an out of contract player, who's 24 and played 20 games.
Should we stump that up? More than we traded for Macrae.
We might walk Aleer to the PSD.

Yeah, pretty amazing how even the slightest disturbance to the status quo just truly rocks people

Everybody here would be thrilled and amazed and quite honestly could not believe it if they played professional football.

Matthew Lloyd - “I think a future second is completely fair for a player that can’t get a game for GWS”.
This is an absolutely insane quote. It's more than fair Llordo - it's daylight robbery.

Two very recent examples of players that were traded straight up for a second round pick - Judd McVee and Alex Neal-Bullen.

GWS can take a long walk off a short pier if they think Leek Aleer is worth anything near that

What doesn't make sense is, clubs do fail to get trades done all the time that is well known. What is extremely unusual is to walk away half way through trade period. Even if our interest had cooled, why wouldn't we just hold firm on our original offer F3 or whatever and if GWS didn't take it before deadline no harm no foul. And end of the day he's OOC so maybe he walks and we get him for nothing. It's just a bizarre strategy. I'm not at all concerned about not getting him (don't rate him as a player) but I would love the club to explain why they've played it this way.

Mackie has that blank-stare campaigner look that if you didn't know him, you'd assume he is an absolute knob. And you'd be right.
