Draper or O’Brien would be important and would improve us again. If Big O is nearing the end purely from injury/ wear and tear then Fort needs proper help. A development ruck won’t do anything in our premiership window so I’m all for going after free agent AFL level players. Don’t mind if we pay overs. We wouldn’t be offering those numbers if we couldn’t find a way to manage the list.

O’Brien would be a safer pick. Draper has more upside but higher risk. I like that he can play forward.

Draper is more mobile and is also a very good contested mark. We have struggled a lot in that area this year ahead of the ball. Morris is playing a bit of a lone role in that regard. Hipwood on the lead is fine but in a pack forget it, it’s not a strength (save for when he plays the bulldogs). At least Fort is starting to clunk a few.

Draper averaged the same amount of intercept marks and marks inside 50 as Big O last year. He's decent for contested marks per game (1.3 last year and 1.8 this year but only played 5 games) but nothing outstanding.

If he cost us nothing salary wise he'd be worth a punt. As it is he's so often injured that he's a massive risk, and doesn't present the upside like Oscar Allen does as a forward.

So Twomey says Essendon's offer is in the 700s per annum. If we're also offering a four year deal, half a million dollars more over the life of the contract means $125k extra per year, probably putting it in the mid 800s. If we're handing out contracts like that to Draper and Allen both, I wonder how we're affording it all. Are we getting Oscar's salary off the books through medical retirement?
We've got a bunch of guys on long term contracts and the cap has just jumped significantly.

We've also got some pretty switched on guys in the front office.

Sounds like it’s either us or Bombers.

He's thinking about whether to come up to Brisbane, while in 20+ degree temps in Queensland having left 10-15 degree temps in Melbourne.

He's as good as signed.

Oscar and Fort are both OOC so no salary "medical retirement" issue if either are not recontacted.

If McInerney has degenerative back issues as reported, he really should retire for his own health.
Also, the club should not renew his contract for the same reason as well as it would be a bad business decision.

I don't like Allen or Draper mainly because of their injury history.
We have enough on our list with age and possible injury problems.

Everything points to us going down the Allen and Draper path though.

What I'd give for 10-15 degrees today. Horrible day here.

Apparent temp of 2 degrees, wind howling from the South. One month down, two to go.

Don't underestimate the benefits of warmth, the Lions medical and fitness / conditioning staff, and a winning harmonious culture.

Just writing that makes me want to play again lol...

Bit of a breeze up here in Brissy but the weather is delicious, went for a long walk along Brisbane Corso and up past our old training ground at Yeronga this morning, also been sunbathing lately.🌞

Love footy trips to Melbourne, but would not live there in a million years.

I’ve done some soul searching and spoke to my spiritual advisor over the past 30minutes and wish to declare that I am fully behind the club recruiting Sam Draper. Whatever it takes. I won’t be taking any further questions at this time.

On whether we can fit Allen and Draper into the cap i think that's okay for the next few years.
They will of course sign for more than a few years most likely around the 4/5 years unfortunately.

I have no idea what players earn, only what we read in the media.
Let's say Draper gets that whopping $800k mentioned. Maybe it is front loaded so higher the first year.

Firstly, i don't think the club would sign Draper unless one of Fort or most likely McInerney are not resigned.
Let's say it is Big O, and he is on $600k and that is a big guess and just for example wise.
That means it costs the club an extra $200k in the salary cap.

Allen has been mentioned in the $800k-$1mill mark. I will go $850k just for example's sake.
This one is not as clear cut as the above example as Day in the obvious one to go for Allen.
I would extend Days contract assuming he plays a reasonable number of games the rest of the year.

So, a few delisting's need to happen to get the money needed.
It may come from these OOC players - Tunstill, McKenna, Robertson, Ryan, possibly McCarthy who would be on the most.
Let's say we delist 2 of those and their combined salary is $750k. We then have to pay someone from the draft say $130k.
That leaves the club $620k to get Allen for $850k or an extra $230k

The salary cap for 2026 only goes up $530k but that is enough to cover those two players.

However, we have to find funds for these players below OOC this year. Hopefully there is still Joe's money still in the kitty.
Remember the club only has to find the difference in the increase.
Players like Gardiner, Zorko & Lester could stay the same or decrease

Darcy Craven (R) James Tunstill, Darcy Gardiner, Callum Ah Chee, Conor McKenna (R), Deven Robertson, Brandon Ryan?
Brandon Starcevich, Lincoln McCarthy, Bruce Reville (R), Dayne Zorko, Ryan Lester (R), Darragh Joyce (R), Luke Beecken (R), Sam Day

I thought it was announced about a month to 6 weeks ago that Fort had resigned for another year?
Am I miss remembering?
A few are mentioning that Fort is out of contract at the end of the year so just thought I would ask.

Edit: just found this

Correct, and Oscar is also signed for next season. Section 5 neither are OOC this year.

there is going to be some deleted posts when Draper kicks 60 next year and wins the brownlow

(yes I know I already made this joke on the main board)

No idea why you would spend big money on draper when you've proven you can win with Fort and Oscar.

But please take him, do not want (for what he will cost).

Apologies looked at the wrong year on the Roster Watch thread.

Well now that Oscar and Fort are here for another year i defiantly don't want Draper.

Trust the process skittlebrew.

We are trying to compete with Geelong on who can collect maximum free agents for next to nothing trades.

I think we'll be ahead if we get Draper and Allen. Hopefully Geelong don't pick up more this off-season and make us chase again.
