It always will be BangyBangy - our achievement is due to the depth we built via drafting and youngsters stepping in to perform at the highest degree very early in their career. 6 under 22s carried us to a flag is remarkable in itself.

Let's not use that to cover our trading gaps though - we have gone in with picking up injured players on the cheap as a strategy. There'll be hits and misses. We have no other option as our draft hand is busy with more youngsters coming through so free agency is our only route.

I don't hate the approach but let's not gloss over the failings either. If we overdo it and have a longer list in the injury ward holding up the cap space as well, then youngsters will start sliding out on the other side. Tough balancing act and that's why I don't envy the people who are in charge of it.
Geelong have advertised recently their lack of draft hand has forced them down the road of drafting players of questionable character and rehabilitating them (Stengle, Smith). Richmond did something similar (Marlion Pickett).
We clearly have a strategy to try and maintain the team cohesion by using our limited draft hand to take a punt on injured players.

We’re not going to get everyone right - but if we don’t take any risks in recruitment we wouldn’t be where we are today.

We have the Morris, Hipwood, Gallop combo for years to come. Draper good resting forward as second ruck to Fort. Why are we spending big bucks on an injury-prone Allen? No longer a need. Money better spent retaining our young talent.
Concerns on tall injured players also come from within. Hipwood will be out for a large part of next season, and no guarantee he’ll get back to any kind of form in 2026 after a 2nd ACL. He has been a serviceable warrior in 2024/25 but hampered by injury for large parts of both seasons.
Payne too - awesome through the back half of 2024 and 2025 until he did his knee, but won’t be seen until halfway through next year, and will need time to find his confidence.
Oscar was the fairytale ending to 2025, but his injury struggles this year are well documented.

The best case for the club is if our relatively expensive new recruits are fighting for their spot in the 23 with our young guns, but we need a broader base than relying on 20 year old’s to step up every week through a 27 week season. Injuries, form drop and failure to develop will happen.

Can see Fort or Draper as our main Ruck with Allen and Gallop sharing the back up. Fort may start the season if Draper not ready. That means a 3 Tall forward line of Allen,Morris and Gallop with Charlie,Lohmann and Bailey the smalls. Rayner moving to more midfield time rotating with Bailey. That's is a powerful combination. Eric might have to move down back.

Not too worried about Doedee yet. We knew he wouldn't be at his best in year one and unfortunately did his ACL just after being selected, impacting year two. In the time that he's been injured, we've had the likes of Froggy remain indispensable despite his age and Dizzy step into Payne's shoes after he took major strides since Doedee's recruitment.
Thought he looked exactly where he should be in his one game this year, very bloody rusty, but not really a liability. A strong pre-season and Fages will find a spot for him. An Andrews/Doedee intercept marking combo is very dangerous.

Gardiner too. I thought his body was absolutely ruined years ago and that he'd retire by 27, and that was before he did his ACL.

Now he's a premiership player who dominated the Coleman medallist in the big dance.
I think this is the best thing about this year for me, Dizz winning one means more to me than Oscar winning one. I’m obviously super happy for Oscar but Dizz has always been a favourite and one of those who went through all the hard years.

Realistically what picks are expected for Ah Chee, Starcevich, and Robertson?
We will get the Eagles assistance pick for Starce which will likely be in the mid 20s after bids matching.

Robertson will be a future Eagles 3rd rounder at best.

Ah Chee is harder to tell but IMO around mid to late 20s.

Twomey just said we are chasing Hawthorn’s first round pick off West Coast, currently pick 16.

“BRISBANE will push to land West Coast's pick No.16 in a trade for Brandon Starcevich as negotiations trickle on between the clubs.

And tied up in the discussions will be the high profile move of Oscar Allen to the Lions, which is the last remaining major free agency deal yet to be lodged.

The Eagles were granted an end-of-first round pick (now No.22) from the AFL as part of their assistance package, leaving them with picks No.1, 16, 22, 23, 37 and 56.

They are looking to land Starcevich using pick No.23, the first pick of the second round, but the Lions are targeting Pick 16, the first-round pick that is tied to the Hawks.

West Coast wants to trade for the two-time premiership Lion so that it doesn't dilute the free agency pick the Eagles will receive for losing Allen, which is expected to be pick No.2. Both Allen and Starcevich are restricted free agents.

Brisbane is chasing an earlier pick to tally more points to match a likely top-five bid for Academy gun Dan Annable.“

I reckon we will be chasing Adelaide’s first for Cal too. Whether we get it is another thing

Ah Chee, future first with something going back the other way.
Starcevich, end of first round.
Dev, third rounder.

Edit: I am in no way qualified to make this assumption. But this is Big Footy.
Similar to what I was thinking.
16 for Starcevich,
37 for Robertson,
Future 1st for Ah Chee … needed for academy kids coming through next year.

So glad Big O got his flag! Well done lad. This is the 2nd fairytale story in a row!

Wonder what 2026 has in for us (Aside from the 3 in a row)

I’m confused by the trading side with picks returned.

Ah Chee and Starce are both out of contract aren’t they?

Why do we get anything in return?
If crows don't trade for Cal he goes into the draft , so that means anyone can pick him up, a trade secures his preferred destination.
STARC is a free agent so a trade is actually offered so they keep pick 2 compensation pick for Allen leaving.
