Okay, so this was in the last paragraph of the Ah Chee announcement

Adelaide has also re-listed Tyler Welsh, as promised, via the Telstra Rookie Draft.

The Crows have one list spot remaining heading into 2026 after drafting Mitchell Marsh (Pick 22) and Archie Ludowyke (Pick 50) in the National Draft this week.

So we didn't upgrade anyone?

It doesn't say whether the position is available on the senior or rookie list. We may have, and they just haven't mentioned it in their media releases.

Short version: we just don't know!

Not exactly true, they've made repeated attempts over the years to lure a ready made replacement over and have been unable to do so, so we keep going back to ROB.

Outside of that they've generally decided we can't carry more than 2 pure ruckman on the list, so stuck with a mature back-up in case ROB gets hurt and decided not to have a developing ruck, which then circles back to our need to trade in a ready made one.
They obviously haven't been trying hard enough. Surely competent club would have a 3rd young ruckman being developed behind the first 2.

I am curious on people’s thoughts on how the Ah Chee situation played out. With us holding firm on what we determined as fair value for Ah Chee in a trade, does this change the landscape for the trading of out-of-contract players across the league? Us finishing 5th doesn’t exactly scream a position of strength in regards to the PSD. The only advantage we had was Brisbane finished higher than us, after going back to back.

After the deal hadn’t gone through, Ah Chee’s manager was quite explicit with the media that he wouldn’t be going anywhere else. And it didn’t seem like he was ever a threat to land anywhere else. Will more teams begin to leverage the PSD more frequently after seeing what we did ?? For me, in years gone by, the PSD only ever seemed relevant in trade discussions if the team trying to bring the player across had finished bottom 4, or even bottom 2.

The PSD is hardly ever used because Trades of uncontracted players rarely fail, because its a virtual certainty that even if the player falls to the PSD they will get to their desired club. So most clubs bite the bullet and accept the offer, like Sydney did with Dawson.

Brisbane were arrogant in the situation and I am almost convinced they thought we would cave and give more and it never came. In the end Ah Chee was uncontracted and had expressed a desire to leave months before the end of the season and Brisbane knew this, played him anyway and he still wanted out. His manager refused to negotiate a contract with them and they still asked for a stupid level of compensation. In the end after the Crows made it clear what their best deal was, the obligation was always on Brisbane to either accept the deal or pass. They passed. By all optics it was more about Brisbane getting a super deal than it was about them convincing Ah Chee to stay. Which is wrong and against the spirit of trading.

This is where the AFL have to look at the whole PSD system. Why should Ah Chee be punished for Brisbane who said farewell to him at their B&F refusing to take an offer for him. Probably a good example of a situation the AFL should have stepped into on behalf of the player.

Hilarious that the one rule we all thought we had to follow - that we had to use 3 picks including rookie upgrades - just seems to have been ignored???

Typical really.

So why would we go into the season with an empty spot?? Makes zero sense at this stage to me.

I see all the train on talk - would we actually take a shot at someone like an Elijah Hollands? Would be unlike us to be honest … other clubs do it, maybe we can pull one out of the fire that works out for us in the long term for a change?

If not him who - must be someone that is able to play AFL in 2026 right?

I’m expecting something to come out before lists are finalised - unless someone can explain the value of the empty spot to me?

Saves salary cap space (especially as the AFL forces 95% cap spend) and it gives you a chance to look at SPP prospects/save it for MSD.

I doubt we'll go in either direction. My guess is we'll go for a very raw prospect from the 2024 draft who we liked but for whatever reason they slipped through the cracks. Who knows, it might be a developing ruck. Also it probably won't be a decision we announce until January, seeing I don't think either of the Murray brothers were trialed early in preseason, and McAndrews wasn't.

McAndrew was a panic purchase.

It will be interesting the type of players we invite.

Rucks, inside mids, kpd, speed...

A few I think have AFL attributes
Setterfield
Hollands
Hobbs
Stevens (did Geelong rab him again?)
Blight
H Jackson

But we may go for a local league option.

We don't technically need to fill the spot. We could leave it vacant, giving us an additional spot to fill next year - in a much stronger draft.

We currently have 37+4+1 on our team lists, which is well within the AFL's rules (we can't have less than 36 on the senior list, but 37 is OK).

Having said that, I expect the club to sign someone during the PSSP, having had a longer look at them over the summer. The chances of that someone being Elijah Hollands are somewhere between zero and non-existent, and rightly so.

Be crazy not to take a player considering we have a few obvious delists come end of next year unless miracles happen with their form

Given Hamish has mentioned the SSP and an empty spot as an option several times makes me think they have a player/s in mind.

Personally I'd probably go a couple of local lads that missed out Blake Oudshoon-Bennier or even Louis Kellaway who was nominated by Richmond but then passed over, poor bugger, both mids so what's to lose? Isn't his dad Duncan one of our physios still?

Taj Murray I feel has the most future potential probably to be a fairly special big man but he will take 3 or 4 years to develop.

I think we will most likely take a player during the PSSP. Having said that, it's not the end of the world if we don't. It's the weakest draft group in years, so filling our list for the sake of having a full list is not really a good strategy.

It as been argued by some posters that there is an advantage to taking a SPP or someone in the MSD because we will have more information on them.

Clearly we (and 17 other clubs) saw the remaining midfielders (Rodriguez, Greeves, Onley) not taken in the main draft as very long shots. As it happens they were taken in the rookie draft but if they had slipped through they would have been very unlikely to go to Adelaide to try for a SPP spot.

Reading between the lines, I think there are some older (20-24 years old) players we want to have a look at. Possibly a well performed SANFL player or an unknown 50 kg mountain climber.

Any guesses????

No mention by Reid of Charlie Edwards re our 2026 midfield options sadly and interesting they feel Indi Cotton given he's grown more they feel he'll possibly be a forward too.

Jake Soligo, Izak played more midfield this year, Josh was going to before he got injured, then you throw in a (Sid) Draper and (Dan) Curtin.

“And we still need to expose some opportunity for Zak Taylor and Billy Dowling.

“We still think we’ve got some depth through there.”

Racheles the one.

Geelong added Stevens to their rookie list

Hollands has showed he can play high level AFL football - As Geelong did with Stengle, let’s roll the dice and take a chance

The lad has opened up about his mental heath and alcohol challenges - that’s his first step back

I would love for our club to be his redemption story

No guesses on the man, but clearly Reid has said that it will be a running midfielder.

For the what to lose, time. Any time spent trialling a player you don't particularly care for (but went undrafted) is time away from a prospect you are genuinely curious on.

I would be very surprised if we went for anyone in this draft class with a SPP pick this year. I'm going to hazard a guess that most of these guys will be looked at in 2026 with a "wait and see" campaign in the twos in the meantime by clubs.

My guess is someone (probably another tall) that got overlooked in the 2023-2024 drafts, seeing as you said, we made a big deal about wanting that slot open.
