We’ve gotta stop suggesting this as a possibility

We’re not converting a generational forward talent into a ruck
We wouldn't be. We'd be converting him into a midfielder that takes hitouts.

Look, he probably stays as a key forward, but there's some attraction to him playing a role that gets him near the ball 70% of the time instead of 20% of the time.

And there's some attraction to him being near the ball 20% of the time when that's only one kick from goal ...

Cook and Jones definitely in the trade/delist category, too

Pedlar presently wouldn’t warrant 2 years. Hope he turns it around though, but confidence is at Jones levels. Hinge fell apart when it mattered, he needs a good year too.

I'd have Cook & Jones in the Trade/Delist group, with Dowling, Ryan & Edwards in the Re-sign 1 year group. If they haven't established themselves as regular members of the best 22 by the end of 2026 then there's no way they should be getting a 2+ year contract.

Surely the selections this year indicate the club rates Taylor above a lot of the guys you’re resigning?

Unless you think he’ll be steak knives in a Vic trade.

Where I sit:

Resign 2+ years
Max Michalanney
Billy Dowing (only due to how many others we should delist)
Mitchell Hinge
Charlie Edwards
Indy Cotton (though i think we already have him contracted for 3 years by cat B rules)

Wait and see (so, stuff like how the team develops, how they play and how much do we love the 2026 draft):

Finnbar Maley (dependant on if Ludowyke booms)
Zac Taylor
Luke Pedlar
Rory Laird
Jordan Butts (though more trade, depending on if other clubs are interested in him)
Sam Berry
Oscar Ryan

Delist:
Brayden Cook
Chayce Jones
Lachlan Sholl
James Borlase (R)
Tyler Welsh (R)

Retire
Taylor Walker

Maybe - though they had a clear option to re-sign Taylor for a longer period and didn't, which makes me think they perhaps are questioning him.

He isn't incredibly versatile - but you might be right.

Hinge I reckon.
Optimistic Draper starts in the middle.

Possibly one for the new draft thread but thought it worth mentioning, in light of the choice to draft two forwards (which I don't mind given where we picked), that our NGA product Ivan Wilkinson was the leading goal kicker in the SANFL U18s last season. He's draft eligible in 2026. Apparently more of a third tall size. Mutineer probably knows more.

Horses for courses, we go taller when it suits with Tex forward & Butts in defence.

A 'little coincidental' that our last five players on the list, Cotton, Maley, Marsh, Ludowyke and Ah Chee, have all been forwards, and four of them talls? I'd hope for better list management than that.
Depends on where they plan to play them, I think Marsh is a genuine utility that can play wing or HB, Cal can play anywhere in all honesty, Finnbar we will need to wait and see. I think Butts is gone next year so maybe they plan to develop one of them as a KPD? I didn't originally like the pick of Ludowkye but I am warming up to it.

Maybe we see Thilthorpe as our future ruck now that we traded for a 197cm forward in Maley. Then recruited another 197cm 18 year old forward in Ludowyke. Then we still have McAndrew
I dont know if full-time ruck is the right decision, but sure a little more time could work. Maybe Finnbar can be developed as a KPD, although how is his field kicking? Better than set shot's hopefully. Also I haven't seen much of McAndrew, does he have the ability to go back? Butts should be traded next year IMO.

My main point is none of them are midfielders. Not that we play many midfielders even when we recruit them. Hopefully next year Curtin, Draper, Edwards and Dowling will finally get a run in the middle given Crouch and Shoey are gone and the penny should have dropped that we get beaten up when Laird goes in there.

We have piled a lot of prime resources into our forward line: (Thilthorpe, Pick 2), Fogarty (12), Rankine (5), Rachele (6), Pedlar (11) and while it is clearly one of our strengths, our main weakness for seven years has been midfield and we haven't answered those questions as yet.

Aren't Rankine and Rachele two of the answers to our midfield question?

Hopefully, we have midfield depth, let's hope that the young lads come on, Curtin is a ripper, Dowling I think can be special, Edwards can be the prototype new midfielder, Daws is class, Soligo hopefully has some more growth and then there's Rankine and Rachele. Personally I agree we need to play the prior draftees more, overall I like our list a lot.
