The point being hes not going to come to the club for a year and get boned.

Its not what we do
We also don't trade for players and given them one-year contracts. It's not what we do.

Given the unusual circumstance surrounding his contract, it's not a stretch to think that they might also be thinking about offloading him unusually early.

Of course, all this will be moot if he plays well and earns a new contract on the back of quality performances.

I can think of plenty of players who have been cut after being given a one-year "dead man walking" contract. I'm struggling to think of many players we've traded for, only to hand them a one-year contract. There's Ben Keays, then theres...?
Then name these "plenty" of players AFC cut after being on our list for 1 year.

I can't think of any recent player.

This is not a dead man walking type contract in Maley, he's a 22 year old 197cm athletic tall very new to high level football that played 7 AFL games this season after getting picked up in the 2023 rookie draft at pick 2.

Rookie & supplementary picks.

When was our last player on the main list for only a year?

Edit - 31 year old Sam Gibson.

I don’t think that’s an important distinction. Main and rookie list might as well be the same, the only difference is rookie component of salary being excluded from cap. Once you get a one year deal, you’re unlikely to get an extension. That said, being new to the club, he’s probably a better chance than existing players. Only Bond has survived that, and it may have been his call.

Reality is this is a guy gifted us by Kangaroos with no other options. Gut feel is he’s up against it. Doubtful both him and Murray remain on the list into 2027.

We can revisit this within a year when we i expect he has a contract extension.

AFC don't delist players on the main list after 1 year... unless we physically cook a 31 year old with injuries. It's not our make-up.

I am hoping we play him in the ruck.

Mainly so I don't have to see our ruckman header the ball to oppo players

As I said, I don’t think the distinction matters, the lists are interchangeable. But agree, we’ll find out end of this year.

Main list players tend to last longer than rookie list players... so yeah, the distinction does matter.

Very rare for a main list player to be delisted within 1 year.

We certainly don't delist 1 year contract players 90% of the time as Vader claimed... & I'm still waiting on this long list of names...

Who was the glenelg player we drafted mid season and cut at seasons end a few years back?
Brett Turner.

We listed an injured player, then delisted him.

Now that was truly bizzare.

Just reckon the way our lists ended up we had a spare spot on both the main and the rookie lists. And both vacancies are being filled with 1 year contracts that are up against it.

He's one step up from "dead man walking" contract. It's very much a "perform in 2026 or you're gone" contract. Why else give him only a one-year contract?

I will remind you that I said he's a 50/50 chance of being retained. At no point have I said that he's already gone.
