Papaya Rules is about the 2 drivers not having a collision on the track (e.g. Ocon/Gasly at Monaco last year). The drivers are allowed to race, but not to overtake unless it's safe to do so.

Piastri was clearly the faster driver all weekend, but started behind Norris because he (Piastri) made a mistake in sector 1 during qualifying. In a somewhat freakish result, Norris failed to f* up the start, leaving Piastri trailing in 3rd for the duration of the race.

While Piastri was faster, he couldn't get close enough to overtake - not helped by Suzuka only having 1x DRS zone, and a short main straight. Without the ability to overtake safely, Papaya Rules came into effect.

McLaren massively stuffed up their team strategy, but it had nothing to do with "Papaya Rules" - it was simply ineptitude behind the team wall, which we saw over & over again in 2024.
I agree - McLaren should firstly have kept Norris out (especially for his "tyre offset" strategy).

Once they failed to do that, when Oscar was noticeably faster and more willing to attack Max, they should have let him past - attack Max (and burn both their tyres). He either gets passed or fails and gives the place back to Lando. This even HELPS Lando's strategy by putting extra pressure on Max (whilst Lando builds his "tyre offset").

The pit-wall aren't stupid - they saw this option as much as everyone else did - the decision was made not to take it. The only reason they wouldn't is to protect Lando (complaining if Oscar got through Max fo the win). The decision (not to make a decision) directly favoured Lando - but could be easily waved away as "no orders - free to race".

I think you give them too much credit.

McLaren need to open their eyes….Piastri is the better driver.
To scared to offend the British roots are they?
On evidence of this year alone, there is really no evidence to suggest one driver has the edge over the other. Sample size too small.

Prior to this year, Lando has had the pace advantage over Piastri (particularly over 1 lap), but has been a bit of a choke merchant. Looks to be very close this year.

Not everything has to be an anti-australian conspiracy.

I think it's pretty simple.

Oscar may have had some pace on Lando, but he wouldn't have had the pace to pass Max.

It's too early in the year to take big risks when you know your car is the class of the field. Max is good but even he won't be able to pull that kind of weekend off all the time.

Keep the powder dry, extend that constructors title lead

Even Oscar's reply was that the team made a fair call but he thought there was no harm in asking.

The best thing he can do for himself is to start regularly outqualifying Lando. He was 4-20 last year and is 1-2 this year. He looks to be improving but Lando's absolutely no slouch over 1 lap.

Yeah 1am is a tough watch
I did it once for a Middle Eastern Race and it was because of two things-

1. Lockdown and couldn’t go anywhere Monday

2. It was the 2021 Abu Dhabi

I reckon I was falling off the perch and about to be pull the pin with Lewis in front …

and then a red flag happens…and within an hour i couldn’t fall asleep

Typically see some decent racing around here, particularly sector one.
After sector one it's sweeping turns which look great and drivers love but you can't overtake.

I watched. I saw the crash. Red flag waived. I remember the cars pulling into the pits.

Then I fell asleep.

I woke up to Max being champion, and social media flooded with whinging poms.
