Isn't the job of a coach to get the best out of their players? To teach them how to tackle, mark, hit targets? To help them have intent, to set expectations? To help put the players in situations where they can learn what to do and how to be execute?

You cant say it has nothing to do with coaching!! It's a coaches job to have them ready, and to address deficiencies.

Yes the coaches can't do it for them so at minimum it's a shared responsibility but to say it has nothing to so with coaching is ignoring the core responsibilities of a coach.
This isn't junior footy

An easy uncontested chest mark, a 5 metre handball, a 20 metre switch kick to a player that is in miles of space which misses a target

I'm not protecting anyone for that performance, but let's have some balance as to who has to take responsibility for what we dished up

such an embarrassing performance and still in disbelief the morning after. attending the R1 game for the first time in 10 years and the worst loss seeing live.

no urgency in the 2nd half and the defence fell apart once Richmond dragged Weitering to the goal square.

no genuine small forwards and we should seriously throw the kitchen sink at Kossy Pickett.

Weitering, Cripps, JSOS and TDK were the only standouts in the game.

Attitude, confidence, FUNDAMENTALS. Those mistakes are a reflection of training standards. Which reflects on the guys running the training sessions......

If you or anyone thinks that a basic uncontested mark, or a simple handball is the responsibility of an AFL coach, we will end up sacking anyone that walks in the door

On last nights performance Haynes could be holding GOV's hand.

Gov just isn't a defender - his first qtr was great actually as an attacking HB. His kicking was excellent early.

One out he's a liability, more often than not going to ground.

SOS was OK - his lack of pace when isolated a worry.

Our defence across the ground was so poor - in each & every contest.
JSOS was the least of our problem last night.

If you think winning 8 out of last 10 games and losing to a VFL team at best in round one is not the responsibility of the coaching group. You're in denial.

Looking forward to the return of Curnow, another who goes to water when the heat is on, and who has never been subjected to anything resembling strong coaching, like all of our so-called 'stars'.

Voss patting McKay on the leg when he was on the bench, when he should have literally been screaming in his face to step the **** up.

I will say this, Lucas Camporeale did fine, he's a debutant and was present early but faded, probably because those around him let him down. I would persist with him for now and makes me excited to see Ben more.

Motlop on the other hand....ugh Durdin and Orazio better be fit soon would rather them than that horrific effort.
Agree with your take on Lucas.

He put his body on the line, took the hits and head over the ball when needed.

Also, presented as an option regularly.

Yes, he turned the ball over...but who in our team didn't?

He will learn greatly from the experience.

Nice deflection, but lets stick to the content of each post, rather than completely changing the context. Player basic, junior footy level acts is not on an AFL coach or his assistants. These were not irish imports learning the game

On our output over the last 10 games, it has been completely substandard, coaches, players and in part list management

Ultimately, the coach takes the heat for substandard performances

McKay shouldn't have played. Was clearly hampered after qty time with his knee injury.

The players would take those marks and hit those handballs 100 times out of 100 at training. It's not a lack of basic skills, it's deer-in-the-headlights panic at the pressure Richmond were putting on. Which has been the case for years with this team.

It seems to me that Voss has been unable to simulate this kind of pressure during training, because surely if you actually trained with it the players wouldn't panic so badly each time it happens.

I don't know how many times I have seen a side look average and a change of coach has changed their skills set dramatically. Belief and trust of who is in charge and what they are doing is massive.

What happened last night (Blues getting a handy lead, then capitulating) has been a constant for many years. Many commentators have commented on our lack of consistency.

The AFL site stated about last night:

"The Tigers hold on to claim a terrific win in their first game of the season. In the last 20 minutes, the ball was in Carlton's forward half for 83% of the time. Richmond kicked 2.0 (12) to 1.5 (11) in this time."

83% of the final 20 minutes was in our forward half! And what did we kick in that 20 minutes.......1 goal 4 behinds! The Tigers with only 17% in their forward half kicked 3 goals 1 behind!!

We fumbled, crumbled under pressure and looked second rate for more than half the game. We are fit, we do have skills......so what is the problem? Lack of desire? Mental weakness?

Vossy's presser was disappointing - he should have been ropeable, instead he again said we need to consider the loss in context. How many times do we need to do this before the coaching team realises there is something fundamentally missing with group?

Was having a nightmare last night that quickly turned into a lucid dream because I realized that the nightmare had already happened...

My real concern is this isn’t a one off

The way we finished last year was the same. Lack of effort, bombing it long, sides picking us apart and too many mistakes

My fear is nothing has changed

2-8 in our last 10 with the wins being against North and WC.

Highlights such as 60-0 vs Brisbane, and this loss which by betting standards is one of the worst in history.

This loss wasnt about luck, injuries, structure etc. If we look at the real reasons, it gets very dark very quick.

This morning… I’m as angry and embarrassed at being a Carlton supporter, then I was last night.

That special ingredient that top teams have, we just don’t have it.

We have a core of exceptional talent, that have individual success. However can’t play as a team. Due to us overpaying this group the rest of the 22 who we can afford, are at the best kids or poor AFL talent.

On the positive note: Our salary cap is stuffed and we have no draft hand to get out of it.

We are stuck with this bunch of underperforming, overpaid, underachievers…

Voss talks a good game but nothing ever changes on field. Pressure us in the midfield and you’ll win the game.

F**k!!!!

Bring in:
Longmire
Selwood
Hodge
Betts

Harry was monumentally disappointing for a near $1m/year player.

We all love Big H but geez it would be nice to see him have some old-school forward's aggression at times.

Defeatist attitude creeps into his games too often for mine.

He got beat up by a guy playing just his 4th game...

On TV the turf looked soft and loose. Lots of kicked up clumps. Maybe some of our guys had the wrong stops in.
Probably should've been addressed at quarter time though, if that's the case.
Dew covered grass, caused the slipping and sliding as well as the poor ball handling, it just seemed to affect us more and they were desperate. Expectation crushes this group of players.

Agree. At least he hunted and found the pill.
