I’ll have a glass of what you’re having; the Hawks speed and skill are going to do some unspeakable things to our boys next week, regardless of Charles.
Our list isn’t built for what the game has evolved into, the Hawk’s is.
The game evolves when good coaches and teams take what they have and make something beautiful out of it.
Collingwood three years ago had no key forwards except Mason Cox, an aging midfield and an 18 year old Nick Daicos
They managed to turn what looked like a dumpster fire into their rope-a-dope, rebound style based around having lots of small forwards running into space.
Geelong in 2022 had an aging team that everyone wrote off. They built a game plan based on slow and deliberate ball movement that built on their strengths and won a flag
Richmond in 2017 lost their second tall forward to injury. They built the forwards pressure scramble-ball style, figured out how to get the most out of Martin and won 3 premierships with it.
The league didn't evolve in their direction. Those clubs figured out their style and forced the league to bow down before it and adjust.
We have a once in a lifetime, unique captain - a 196cm unicorn who can do almost anything on the footy field. We use him exclusively as an in and under grinding midfielder, except when we randomly throw him in the ruck. We have two Coleman medal winning forwards and can't consistently kick 10 goals in a game against anyone. We have a unicorn ruckman, two other number 1 draft picks, unique players like Saad, Silvagni, even players who have moved on like SPS, Fisher, Dow who brought stuff to the table.
It's not that the league is evolving away from us. We simply cannot figure how to unlock the best of our players and consistently play the game on their terms. It works for a quarter, maybe, and we look as good as anyone. But aside from that our game plan just looks like hard work, all the time - like the game plan is fighting against the players just as much as the opposition...
