Except the draft is after trade week.
Live trading I guess? If mcguane elevates himself to close to the top 10, we'll need to extract our F2 into this years draft to match without going into deficit (which then means you can't trade out your F1, I think). But I imagine during trade week our focus will be about making sure we have enough points.

Good point. So the question is does the rule stop you from trading out in advance or does it force you to trade in in the year you're going to fall short?

It's all a bit silly. If they're actually concerned about teams becoming really shit and uncompetitive due to trade, they should be looking at it the other way and banning what Richmond did. It's bottoming out and chasing first round picks that results in teams becoming really shit and uncopetitive - not the other way around

Collingwood’s only first-round pick from 2023-2025 will end up being pick 19 Ed Allan, with the AFL requiring clubs to take two first-round picks in every four-year cycle.
I hate that journos do less than the bare minimum in research these days.

1) Allan was picked in the 2022 draft

2) DeMattia was selected in 2023

3) In the last 4 years, Collingwood have taken 3 first round selections.
Daicos, Allan and HDM. If McGuane is bid on in the first round as expected this year, that number still remains at 3 out of 4.

So why is this numpty claiming we’ll need “permission” to trade a future first this year?

Edit: just saw it’s a Ralphy article. Explains everything really…

The whole article is based on a falsehood. We took a first round selection in both 2022 (Allan) and 2023 (Demattia). We might even use one in 2025 to cover McGuane if he is selected in the 1st round. I don't see why we can't trade out our 2026 1st if we want to and we might even be able to swap out our 2027 1st if McGuane is selected in the 1st round.
It’s legit fan fic by Ralphy. Honestly any competent fact checking on this would have the whole article scrapped. Astonishing that it was allowed to be published.

We also took three first rounders in 2020-
He that shalt not be named, McRae and Reef
Well spotted! So that’s 6 first round selections from 2020-2024.

Too early to say that given player movement will inevitably impact our points available.

Not white sure we should be boasting about our recruiting/trading, and salary cap budgeting, over the past decade.

Nah, you're right. We've only won a flag, lost 1 grand final, 2 prelims and a semi in the last decade. How shit are we!?

live trading won’t allow us to get Rowell.
I’ve always been a fan of being able to trade players you have drafted on draft night (like in the nba) for picks or contracted players.
Am also in favour of a short (3-4 days) trade window post draft.

No. Sorry, I must have been confused what you were referring to. My bad.

I am with you in that it appears more Ralph fan fiction than anything else, but I think there’s enough truth to it for it to have made it to print.

I’m going out on a limb here and guessing he’s heard we’re a fair way down the line with Rowell (hence why he was name dropped so strongly) and my expectation would be that that move would cost us our 2026 and 2027 1sts at the end of the year. In that scenario I believe it would be wise of the club to have spoken with the AFL about our flexibility. A McGuane 1st Rd bid would restore order for 23-26 and mean we’re behind the 8 ball for 24-27. By doing that trade if McGuane falls we’re on paper well in breach of the rules.

My two cents, that article is more about what Ralph isn’t telling us than the actual story he concocted…

I like your thinking here
