They aren’t costing us much. Our number 1 man is another perfect example. I know you cant give them forever, but the fact is they do take time

It gets back to whether a player who won't make it is worth a list spot. They aren’t costing us much.
Sorry, I don’t really get the question? If we had to get rid of one of Smit, Steene or Cox for a shot at 2026 who would it be?
I agree and I'm not opposed to giving them a bit of time to come good. I havent seen too much of either so I don't have a strong opinion either way on whether they will make it. they are babies when it comes to ruckmenThey aren’t costing us much.

It maybe too early on Steene and Smitt, however, while we are in the window I doubt investing so much of our ruck resources in highly speculative players is wise. We’re not wasting trade capital on another Ruck - Cox has still got another year, and is far more useful than the narrative offered here by some.
And it’s way too early to judge Smit and Steene.
It depends what your priorities are while in the Window - I'd say KPD not Rucks. It maybe too early on Steene and Smitt, however, while we are in the window I doubt investing so much of our ruck resources in highly speculative players is wise.
Didn't want to leave GWS but he looks like a ready made playerWade Derksen goes alright
Wanted to go to Melb last year. GWS held him to hid contractDidn't want to leave GWS but he looks like a ready made player
Equal with key defenderGiven Cox’ form McStay can hardly stay on the field a ruck/fwd is our biggest need.
KPD. We're a serious injury to Moore/Howe away from being back in the pack due to vfl level defensive unit.Given Cox’ form McStay can hardly stay on the field a ruck/fwd is our biggest need.
Equal with key defender
We need KPD depth but it’s an area of strength in the ones. We’re bare on second rucks in the AFL team alone the twos.KPD. We're a serious injury to Moore/Howe away from being back in the pack due to vfl level defensive unit.
Cox is adequate, barely. We can do without him too.
Agreed, especially because I don’t see any VFL defenders outplaying him by any significant measure, and they all seem to share his limitations.I’d like to see Dean given a go before committing a list spot to another VFL defender…

Aleer is not available in the MSD, though. But yeah, it’s a good thing if we don’t ever need to use Dean again.Aleer definitely doesn’t share his limitations.
Dean is one of those guys that will always look good at that level because even as a 20yo he was doing what he’s doing in 2025. The problem is the step up when his opponents are bigger and faster than state league so they get the separation.
I’d personally prefer we don’t see him given another proper go because that means injuries to two of Howe/ Moore/ Frampton which will seriously disrupt our best line…
Definitely re Aleer that was to provide context to how Dean is looking out there. From what I saw yesterday I thought Dean was the better of the two with his ability to intercept and I doubt there’d be many going better at that level, but give me a choice of who I’d prefer at senior level it would absolutely be Aleer.Aleer is not available in the MSD, though. Did Krueger ever play or even train as a KPD with us?Definitely re Aleer that was to provide context to how Dean is looking out there. In terms of MSD I think Krueger would be a better option than Dean if he’s got his head around being a defender. He may be made of glass, but we all know he’s got the physical attributes Dean doesn’t, he knows our system so there’s more scope for him to be senior relevant immediately and he’s the type of guy that will run through brick walls if asked.
I reckon Dean has gone up another level this year. 23 disposals and 8 marks is almost his norm these days. He's actually having a better season than both alir and freddy. Dean hasn't really had the opportunity this year because he hasn't been needed. Howe and Maynard were always going to play ahead of him because of the weather forecast. I have a feeling that we won't even bother getting a key defender in the MSD. We'll probably take a longer term option like brown or similar. We should look at getting a key defender at the end of the year though as Moore and Frampton are getting much older. It's a bit of a conundrum. I think we'll back in Dean as back up for this year. I do understand all your concerns though.Definitely re Aleer that was to provide context to how Dean is looking out there. I think Dean has improved. His leadership down back is strong, directing people around the ground and taking lots of initiative at their line meetings during the breaks.Definitely re Aleer that was to provide context to how Dean is looking out there. The advocacy for Kreuger is surprising- he’s erratic, unpredictable, impulsive and injury prone.Did Krueger ever play or even train as a KPD with us?
I just wonder if our best option/s are hardly more reliable than Dean, maybe we should just look at a different part of the ground.
I think the emergence of West beyond expectation means that we are not as desperate for KPF backup as we thought we were when McStay had just gotten injured. The advocacy for Kreuger is surprising- he’s erratic, unpredictable, impulsive and injury prone.
His aggression is a positive but we need level heads in the backline , not impulsive raging bulls.
What has changed to now make him a MSD target - it’s a mystery to me.
Dean has progressed well and deserves opportunity.
