No trading or drafting this offseason will get us out of this shit filled abyss.

Wardlaw, Whitlock & Duursma need to take huge strides in 2026 or else this list build is puss without it. Probably still puss with it. Three top 3 picks used on this lot, that’s a shit load of investment on players not playing much senior footy in 25.

Miracle 1 - Wardlaw needs to stay fit, build his tank, clean up his disposal, average 20+ possessions and transform this one way midfield.

Miracle 2 - Whitlock needs to take his first step in becoming that 20+ possession intercepting defender/distributor and bring some class to the backline.

Miracle 3 - Duursma needs to bulk up, cement his spot in the forward line, become a marking presence, add some X factor and kick 25+ goals and make up for 2 wasted years.

I hope most you are religious, because it’s time to start praying for miracles people.
Fair to expect more of Wardlaw and Duursma next year, but expecting Whitlock to get 20 touches at AFL level is unrealistic. COS at Cats in year two has averaged 14 and 2 intercept marks.
It's unlikely Matt plays close to that amount of AFL games in year two and really it should be on Wawson, Comben, Goater and Archer types to carry the load. Just let the kid develop at VFL level and come in when he looks ready.

There’s a lot riding on those 3. Stiffy is good, but not someone that will win us a final, and for me Goad and Wawson are very much long term development players even though Wawson is getting games. It would be disastrous to end up with Harry, Colby and FOS as the only 3 A/B-graders from 5 years on the bottom

Log is on my podium of the worst recruits we have brought in over the last 30 years. The other two are Hay and Polecat.

Not committed to our football club in any way, just here for laughs and his paycheque. Horribly overrated footballer

PS honourable mention to the dude from Sydney who attended one training session before retiring. May have made to podium if he had actually pulled on the jumper but JH, JP and GL have him covered
One or two Essendon rejects would like a word

Sure. We don't quite have that match winner like a TT with class just yet, but some are still young and developing.
We also need some of those hardworking role player types who you can count on to contribute each week to help the team move forward moreso than just keeping adding elite talent imo.
At some point we'll be drafting to target specific roles or targeting some more class once our positional needs are more covered with our R1 and R2 picks that are left over from player trades as we go forward.
I don't really see us getting out of the bottom 6 or 8 for a few years whilst we churn through 7 or 8 players this year and probably something similar in 2026. Also, a chance some players are might be traded if they don't come on.

Wawson is more ready physically than Whitlock to play AFL footy, so he should be further in line.
If they think Whitlock is ready then fair enough, but should be 3rd or 4th tall, not carrying the backline.
We need more from those 23-27 year olds in terms of improvement like Cam and PC have shown this year.

Agreed, but you would hope to get more bone fide stars from all the top 5 picks we’ve had since 2020

What? Is that actually what he's been offered? Draper isn't worth that.
I could understand a team paying 750-800k like Crows to get him back home.
But given he's an unrestricted FA, other teams don't really have to break the bank unless they weirdly want to.
The media narrative is ‘if’ Draper leaves (the suggestion being it’s more not less likely) that Essendon might get another Top 10 pick as compo.

Given the new CBA and Salary Cap and the need for his wage to be in the top 5%, that’s around $1M a year to trigger said first round pick.

You’re right that it’s been reported as a probability, but gee it’s hard to imagine who would pay that for a c-grade ruck, when they’re a dime a dozen every year.

I’m not convinced about that Ferbs, he makes brain dead decisions every week some absolute howlers that weren’t in his game a season or two ago.
He gets caught alot between his man and the contest, but to me it seems he makes more contests each week and gets caught less. Ie he is getting better at reading the play and the pace of the game and when to go or stay. He missed alot of footy so it makes sense he might need to readjust.

I'd kind of given up on him earlier in the year but think its worth waiting till next season to see how he goes before writing him off now.

Polec was a disgrace. We had to move the pick but my god that was horrible.

Jonathan Hay was just completely cooked on the gear by the time he got to North.

Mark Powell is who you are thinking of.

Yep. Adding another cheap addition would help us like a Starcevich or Budarich type being mid 20's or somebody who has had a few years somewhere else and can't break into the team.

We'll have to put up with some of those older players for 12-24 months to give the kids time, but depending who you bring in some of them might be jettisoned quicker.

Starcevich would be great. He would have a panic attack seeing our standards compared to where he has come from.

My starting back 6 next year is the following:

B: Archer WDawson RHardeman
HB: Mckercher Comben Logue

Rotation: Mcdonald

Goater and Daniel emergencies

I have big question marks over Logue, with Goater only being slightly shorter than him, he can potentially play that role.

Its very very young, but Mcdonald needs to continue to be the general down there for a while, and we actually need Logue to show some leadership. Especially with Corr not being in this.

Wonder whether Darcy Wilson is gettable.

Bit soft but I wouldn't mind a budget McKercher.
Talking like McKercher is a certified gun and isn't prone to softness (at this stage). Jury still out whether he justifies a top 5 pick, much less a top 2. I don't mind him as a player but if I'm honest I can't see any simulation where O'Sullivan doesn't turn out to be a much better footballer. Anyway, digressing a little bit.

Wilson is a good player ahead of the ball and wouldn't really compare him to McKercher anyway. A lot of fans on here wanted him, remember that well and were disappointed when we missed out. He would complement our side well.
Probably not gettable though.

Check out the video on baseline footy of Baxter Sruk.
Got the medal for BOG in the u16's carnival on his 16th birthday.
His build & skills leave many of listed players in the dust (not that they'd care as long as they're getting paid).

People whinging about Rawlings, but if you're looking for the worst North trade ever, try Daniel McConnell - picks 13 and 29 for four games.

Personal I think that’s too tall back there.
Archer is essentially Dane Rampe in my eyes, he and McDonald will play on the 3rd talls / medium types. No need for Logue.
Comben must increase his 1on1 defensive work again, and then McKercher as our only ‘distributor and nothing else’ type. Goater (if he gets on the park) and Hardeman are gonna have to be do-it-all types with line breaking, intercepting and defending (I believe they can). Whitlock is an interesting piece and probably eventually takes over from McDonald in my eyes as an interceptor/3rd tall defender with the potential to become the CHB if he packs on size in a few years. W Dawson as the gorilla back there. I am quietly optimistic on them as a group long term but the timeline is a bit off. In 2 years maybe that is an elite group with a few additions, especially a genuine small defender with neat skills and some depth in the line-breaking department. Pink I think provides solid depth as a 2nd tall for a bit of time.

yeah, good assessment this.

If Logue is depth/traded out, thats fine. Can you see Goater playing this role from round 1?

Mckercher will get 35 a game playing this role, but they may not be super damaging. Whitlock clearly gets into this group in the next 8 to 12 months as well.

I like where this group is heading, but it is very very young.

We just have to play WDawson and Chom in the backline for as many games as we possibly can.

BFNAAK too.

Loved him in his draft year and really fits what we need.

Hope he's as disgruntled as you could possibly imagine and wants out and we go hard.
With what though?

Honestly if Duursma does end up wanting out he shouldn't dictate which club - Wilson + a decent pick would be a good deal imo.
