Personal I think that’s too tall back there.
Archer is essentially Dane Rampe in my eyes, he and McDonald will play on the 3rd talls / medium types. No need for Logue.
Comben must increase his 1on1 defensive work again, and then McKercher as our only ‘distributor and nothing else’ type. Goater (if he gets on the park) and Hardeman are gonna have to be do-it-all types with line breaking, intercepting and defending (I believe they can). Whitlock is an interesting piece and probably eventually takes over from McDonald in my eyes as an interceptor/3rd tall defender with the potential to become the CHB if he packs on size in a few years. W Dawson as the gorilla back there. I am quietly optimistic on them as a group long term but the timeline is a bit off. In 2 years maybe that is an elite group with a few additions, especially a genuine small defender with neat skills and some depth in the line-breaking department. Pink I think provides solid depth as a 2nd tall for a bit of time.
good summary.

Can someone refresh my memory - assuming the 2 extra rookie spots are removed, how many do we have to move on to make room for (say) 3 draftees and a trade and/or DFA (so a hypothetical total of 4 incoming)?
3ND (but that can include rookie upgrades eg upgrade finnbar)
and then would need to cull for any extra player brought in via trade
and 2 rookies need to make way anyway for LTI also just to get back to net 0

and i still dont see how they could justify taking away the extra spots when we are still bottom 4, if anything we should be getting even more

so assuming we do keep the 2 rookie spots maybe 3-4 off senior list, 2-3 off rookie list

On another note - we weren't the only ones but missing out of NWM hurts. He is an absolute superstar and could easily be the best player in the comp in 2-3 years. Even in Lyon's defensive and very structured side he's standing out big time.
It's a shame we didn't draft every good player from the last ten drafts.

Letting Mason Wood go was a dagger to the heart. But sometimes you really don't know what you've got til you've lost it. I remember doing a tour of The Huddle years ago and seeing multiple 10kg bags of flour in a store-room. It wasn't until years later that you find out what that's actually being used for. Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined the fallout that would follow.
But other than Wood, every other player you guys have let go has done bugger all. I mean we even gave Mahony a year. Ripping fella. Loves his fly-fishing & kite-surfing.

Ford
Bergman (Sorry Pal)

There's your 5 to bring in probably 3?

Agreed, but you would hope to get more bone fide stars from all the top 5 picks we’ve had since 2020
Sure we would want more to show for it, but some of it is also young.
How long did it take Rayner or Zac Bailey to really show something? 6 plus years? It can take some time.
We need to get better at finding and developing elite talent in the 20's, 30's or 40's and stop the heavy reliance on thinking top 5 picks will get us out of the hole we're in.
No doubt you're more likely to find your stars with high end picks, but recently there's been some good talent in the later part of the top 10 and/or teens.

The media narrative is ‘if’ Draper leaves (the suggestion being it’s more not less likely) that Essendon might get another Top 10 pick as compo.

Given the new CBA and Salary Cap and the need for his wage to be in the top 5%, that’s around $1M a year to trigger said first round pick.
Fair enough. Wait and see what contract he gets offered. Could understand him getting more to head home, but quite a risk with his injury history if it gets around that mark.

It would be Duursma + a pick, unfortunately.
You are close to going on ignore, I've never seen such nonsense come out of North supporters mouth.

It won't, it can't, use of definitive language doesn't work (unless you actually know) which you can't.

Starcevich would be great. He would have a panic attack seeing our standards compared to where he has come from.
True. 25 years old is a good age bracket. Concussion history a bit of a concern. But a premiership player.
Calm ball user down back or big body in the middle. If not him, somebody like that would be great.

Howdy

I saw a few of our blokes thrown around in this thread, and I think you're on the money with some.

When we got Barrass and Battle we pretty much shut the door on a few of our players careers at Hawthorn.

Barrass, Battle, Sicily, Scrimshaw, Impey, Amon, Hardwick (and young Mraz and McCabe waiting in the wings) are settled and means some guys have a choice - stay at Box Hill and fight for a spot or move.

Jai Serong (WCE apparently have spoken to him)

Changkuoth Jiath

Sam Frost (Sydney & Collingwood have spoken to him)

James Blanck

Seamus Mitchell

These guys, you'd think would be open to a conversation about a fresh start at least.

In the Ruck, Ramsden has gone past Ned Reeves - he's worth asking the question to plus midfielders Henry Hustwaite, Finn Maginness - and maybe even James Worpel as our offer to him was........unconvincing to say the least.

We really are after an A grader like Butters or Reid, so Worpel may be open to moving on (Geelong have spoken to him apparently)

I want to be really clear - in a perfect world, we'd want to keep most of these guys but they are at the age where, if they want a career, then the grass maybe greener elsewhere.

The main thing is - these are not VFL players. These are guys who are 100% AFL quality, but are just stuck behind guys at Hawthorn who simply are better than them.

All of them would give great service to their new clubs.

As an aside - what's happened to Eddie Ford? I really really rated the guy, but can't get a game - what's that all about? Attitude? Fitness?

Anyway - hopefully you may find some of this of interest. Good luck for the rest of the season.
