That is a hard one to answer Makeshift Park, I actually wanted Jack but he's a key forward with no other position, can play back but his primal position is that key forward role. Done some good things in his games at Port but I would be shocked if he doesn't stay at the club, I would offer a second rounder for him but on potential Port would simply do two things, laugh and say "Yeah sorry mate, he's contracted" and "He's happy here at Port and loving Adelaide".😀
Unless he does the JHF special. I'm homesick and want to play with my brother.
A man can only dream that Port get their karma 😂

How do the higher rated players in area of need this year compare to last?
This year is a weaker draft, mostly because a significant number of the highly rated players are linked to father sons, or academy picks.

From my understanding Whitlock would be one the best talls available in this draft

He still wouldn't be a top 10 pick in this draft.

Chances are our inept season has crippled any chance of a productive trade period. On the bright side, doing no trades might be an improvement on recent years.
St Kilda are pulling in players and they were pulp.

There's hope for us yet.

North bias aside, you'd be an idiot not to enjoy going to West Coast, Crows or Freo.

Great facilities, solid clubs, make your own way in a new interesting city.
I'd pass. Melbourne is a bit cold, bit windy, bit boring, but at least it's open past 7pm

We're about to see what pull Carlton have.
Indeed. Will be interesting to see if they still have any

I might be on my own here but I would go in the opposite direction with the father son. Make the threshold 50 games and if players nominate they come to the club for a token pick. I love the romance of it.I love that the Daicos boys play for the Pies and and Darcy the dogs.
Its the only part of the draft where every club (excluding gws and Gold Coast at the moment) have an exact equal chance of getting a star.
NGA should be run by the afl and all players available in the draft. The lions and swans getting so many NGAs and father sons is skewing the debate when they should be treated separately imo.
Kind of agree. I'd make it 1 game tho.
Agreed no crims in the eastern suburbs : stern look
Certainly not in the Bayside Bubble. We occasionally see a dipper, that's about it.

Just reading my own words over, I really should feel more rage than I do. It’s a ****ing disgusting and embarrassing stat.
We tried mid table oblivion. Not as great as the Saints are making it look !!
Have you forgotten already? 8-10 wins every year, throwing ridiculous money at players who laugh and never come, get crap draft picks each year. The rebuild had to happen, it just didn't have to be botched.

Look CS1.

Unless Penang or Kho Samui establish AFL teams, your only chance of playing football and sunning yourself on weekends is Qld or WA.

Agree it had to happen, but 6 years on and we are still praying that our 1st, 2nd and 3rd year players are the answer.

It’s scary that even becoming a competitive team hinges on unproven players like Whitlock, Dawson, Duursma, Goater, Goad and George coming good.

Come on mate.. you know me better than that. After living in Asia for 5-6 years, I will not return unless it's to stop on a plane for light refreshments or refueling on the way to Europa. But my preference is to travel the other way, I'm more ya Caribbean Resort Rat than avid culture-acquirer traveller.

The price of our inability to bring half decent players into the club means we have to grow our own.

Everybody's aloud their opinion ShinboneSpirit, a couple of supposed players that are being bandied about is kinda, well sort of, crazy. For one, Darcy Wilson is going nowhere you'd think, Jack Whitlock, at the moment, will stay. A defensive midfielder and an experienced defender make sense in the trade & free agency period for us. Your opinion on some players there, is quite interesting, is Wilkie really going to leave or is he just driving up his worth, I certainly don't hate the idea of Jake Lever, fresh start, an experienced defender and backs himself + he had a down year for the Dees but some are saying he's cooked, poppycock.

People want our backline to magically get better but want to either pick players who have no intention to come to our club or aren't experienced enough to actually help & guide us. Windhager if he really does want to leave would be a welcome addition, a very good player, Flanders would be a good pickup but is interested in other offers, so where he goes will be another interesting watch, possibly to , dare I say it, St Kilda. Going for pick 6 is not the problem, getting it, is the jewel, and if we do get it, one thing is for certain, we've identified a player we really want, if we've done that, then I say do it!
Will Dawson and our backline is magically fixed, or pretty close to it.

Im not sure many are expecting us to make the 8 next season, although im expecting us to go close. 27 absolutely we should be playing finals.

We look at the profile of our team, we dont need or want a quick fix, we want a back 6 to be the strongest it can be for say 27 to 33 and that means Dawson becoming our no1 key back. He's got all the tools, just got a little lost at times when we were being overwhelmed with non stop repeat entries into our D50.

Id like to see him play as many games as possible next year, let him learn on the AFL monsters while we're being more competitive in 26. That sets us up for Chom to play the interceptor role he's better suited to with one of Pink, Logue or Whitlock with the later eventually taking it for himself. Probably by 27 we're looking at Dawson, Chom and Whitlock as our tall defenders for a sustained period of time.

As for the med/ smalls to play beside them we've a long list already. We'll have a squeeze in the mids/ wings so a few such as FOS, Kerch, Duursma, Powell may find themselves off a back flank occasionally. Then add in Archer, Hardeman (look forward to those two getting continuity together), Goater, George, Daniel, LMac, Fisher (for now) and possibly Urquhart starting an apprenticeship back there.

If we cant make a solid defensive unit from that, with the mids we have then something is seriously wrong.

Realistically, if we ended up with one A grader, two B graders, and three busts out of those six, that would be a solid result. They all appear to have the talent and attributes to get there, but it doesn't always happen. At the moment my assessment of them would be:

Whitlock - appears to have plenty of skills and can read the game. He still a very light frame for a 198cm player. Needs plenty of food and gym work over the off season, and we need to work out whether he is a forward or an intercepting defender. From what I've seen in the VFL, he might be better suited to defense.

Dawson - progressing nicely given how young he is (was youngest in his draft year). Putting on strength and size to compete with the big forwards. Looks likely to become the guy to play tight on the opposition's best big forward. More gym and size over summer. Should be looking to play a lot more AFL football next year.

Duursma - has all the talent, but does he want it enough? Can he take feedback? Can he work hard enough? A big off season to get his body right and build fitness and strength is critical. Could he play an Isaac Heeney type role if he really works at it?

Goater - Can he get his body right after the last two years? At this stage it would be great just to see him get a decent run at things with some continuity. if he can't do that he may join the likes of Jesse Smith, Will Walker, Bergman etc as players that showed some talent but the body just wouldn't let them get there. At his best, make Daniel a long-term VFL player as both he and Hardeman can provide run from the back line with far better defensive output.

Goad - tracking nicely for a skinny giraffe. Calories and weights for him over the summer. He would still be a way off competing physically with genuine AFL ruckmen but has most of them covered for skill and athleticism. If he improves as much next year as he did this year he will be the real deal by 2027.

George - after missing so much football with knees and other injuries finally got on the park this year and, in flashes, showed why we have been patient with him. Has some genuine skill and X factor. Fitness and comnfidence in his body will be critical to take the next step.

Yes, when you look at any of our trades in isolation you can justify them. But there is a breathtaking lack of strategy behind our list management.

Say we do trade up and swap our two second rounders and our F2 for pick 6. That looks like a goodish deal if there is a player we really want available there. However, lets add it to a few trades of our previous trades and see how it goes. Let's add up the Daniel and Whitlock trades plus that one.

Once Whitlock cancels out the original second rounder we traded away, I have it as Pick 3 + 21 + F2 for Daniel + Pick 6. Does that look good to you? We just keep shooting ourselves in the foot.
Talking of shooting ourselves in the foot.

That Daniel trade will keep haunting %^%$#!

IF, we have used that Daniel pick on Whitlock and had our first rounder then we'd be looking at either Dyson Sharp or Josh Lindsay with that pick (Based off Cal Twomey's latest draft guide). Most likely the later, as i cant see WC giving up pick 2 for Starchevich.

And what is Lindsay? A rebounding HB with a laser left foot. It'll feel like we shot off both feet.

Don't talk about it please!!! I stayed away from watching the U18's as a protest to myself after l heard debacle...we didn't trade F1 for Daniel, it was for Whitlock...yeah keep telling that to yourself to justify it - but when l look at the prospective top 25 to 50..we need a big bodied mid...we need a running hbf...we need a key...FMD at pick f'in 3 or 4 or 5, wherever we land we could address that need...oooh no, lets give that F1 away.

Commiserations. I know you're heavily invested in David Swallow having been posting about him ever since <checks> 12 hours ago.
They messed up their micro dosing and could no longer tell what year (or planet) it was.

Question for the board....

IF we trade up for pick 6, thats leaving little to no trade capital for us to use this year. Unless we get some sort of trade capital back for players such as Phillips, Fisher, Scott and co are we more likely to offer 1 year deals and keep them as depth.

If not it appears we'd be taking a bunch of late draft long shots instead.

It hasn't stopped raining in SE Qld since 2021. Maybe WA is the only option.

would be peak brady to take late picks into an already weak draft locking them in for 2 years on our list

I reckon there's a chance we did that trade anyway and take Matlock and someone else.

Yeah thats what im thinking, probably a good chance those guys are offered 1 year deals or kept unless we get something back or they're part of a larger deal.
