Just catching up on Alex Davies' fortnight.

Not the first time its been said here, but a 193cm defensively minded midfielder is certainly a significant hole in our list.

Particularly one who can make 30 touches and 10 tackles in a single game.

Surely he'd only cost a third rounder?

EDIT: Ah just realised he's not OOC until next year. So it would take a bit more to get GC picking up the phone, I suspect.
You wouldn't want to be paying any more than a 3rd rounder. He was bog average against the Tigs on the weekend.

Heard the shinboners pod boys making a big claim to get him, the numbers look good as you mentioned specifically defensively. Would imagine a third or fourth rounder should be enough

Not quite sure how Powell has become the whipping boy here.

On player ratings he's our sixth best player this year - ahead of Sheez, Larkey, George and Zurhaar.

He's played 75 games in a terrible team. Would be persisting.

He's not a whipping boy for me per se, just another that can't cover enough ground and still provide good attack. It's not his fault we have a shit balance in the middle and I have no issue if we solve that with other moves. We are not winning games of football and there are very few names I have written in ink.

If GC were happy with a future third (I assume they don't need any more 2025 picks) then I'm sold.

having to play Paul Curtis and Zurhaar at bounces is a sobering reminder of how weak we are in the midfield.
shocking really for a club that's rebuilding from the midfield out for over 5 years now.

wouldn't be surprised if clarko is pushing for a big body midfielder this trade period.

Fourth for clearances this year with a pretty young group in there 🤔

Nothing wrong with experimenting in dead rubbers.

Clearances - that aren't winning us games. I don't rate forwards that take 10 marks and only kick it out on the full, and I don't rate ones that kick at 100% accuracy but only get a shot every 5th game. Jury is very much out on this midfield group and clearance wins are a very small part of their job.

Otherwise agree, nothing wrong with moving some magnets. I think given how many HF flankers we have it probably should have happened sooner and more regularly. Might have been able to get more games into Duursma et al if these guys played up field more often.

Unfortunately in that batch we expected to have Thomas and JHF, and that's not including the covid draft that brought us to Phillips. Unfortunately we need more in there and inevitably that will also be seeking an A-B grader to replace Parker.

This is what irks me when people just cite North drafting mid after mid with no context. Sure, draft profile was skewed towards mids, but two of them aren't at the club anymore so would need to be replaced, either through trading or drafting additional mids.

I genuinely don't know how we do it, but IMO we need a reset of senior talent to stack onto what we did this year with the 3 amigos. We need to find 2-3 minimum senior ready footballers that will take the place of assumed best 23 players from this year. There needs to be enough new faces in this squad compared to 2024 that are ready to go solid footballers, not for the talent injection, but for the cultural one of not having so many players that are used to giving up the contest whenever it gets hard. 6 new players from last season plus 2-3 new picks (FOS, Hardeman) into the 2026 starting 23 means 8-9 brand new players without 5+ years of baggage - I think it is needed.

If Goad isn't ready next year to play a 20% ruck role we need to have a genuine 2nd ruck picked. We struggle way too much on transition to have our only 2nd tall (ish) forward rucking so much. We also need a viable option for when Xerri is out, it is ridiculous to not even have a viable backup ruck. Teakle is not a ruck solution, of course I was putting a line through his name yesterday late in the game when he pulled 2-3 great grabs in a 5 min period...
Couldn’t agree more here. We need to be brave with our trades, bringing in seniors but also willing to trade out. Spot on with the ruck situation too.

If we want another midfielder, and one that defends, l'd be all over Deven Robertson!!
With the Ashcroft boys and Annable coming in, he's being squeezed.

Also, if the ruck rule is destined to be changed next year (to allow leapers a better chance) then young Goad could the find of 2026!!

Can’t wait for Goad to get game time. With the sub rule being out potentially I hope he’s in the team and we run with both him and X

I know everyone in this thread means well but are all these names going to really have any significant impact our list build is so shit we can only really go to the draft with what we got. There is a reason these types aren’t getting a run and why they’d possibly be available

It wouldn't hurt, as long as they can run. Though X, Wardlaw and Jy are very physical players already. I think our midfield will be very strong if we use it wisely and find the right combination.

Also, you don't need to use midfielders at centre bounces if you have other players better suited to it. At the end of last year Geelong had Stewart and Dangerfield at most centre bounces, then Stewart played back and Danger played forward. I think this approach helps spread the load. Most of a midfielder's job is running in transition. I'd be happy if FOS and McKercher played midfield but let bigger bodied types like Parker, Curtis, and Z take the centre bounces for them whilst they develop.

Certainly makes sense from our end.

If he was OOC this year you'd think a third rounder would do it.

He's been on their list five years, played only 30-something games in that time, and cost GC nothing in draft picks to begin with.

As it stands, you wouldn't imagine he's much of a problem for the Suns salary cap. And our picks mean little when they've already got 3 first rounders this year. So I wonder what offers they'd entertain this off-season. Assume it would have to involve a decent future pick.
Surely we get it done with a 2026 R3

North need to be all in on Darcy Wilson this off-season, particularly with B Scott's massive drop off. The combination of Wilson/McKercher/Stephens/Powell with some rotations through the middle will sort out our wings for the next 10 years.

That, along with some senior experience and a KPF would tie us over nicely. Really keen for Soup and Roos Fanatics views on Cam Mackenzie as well. Doesn't seem to be getting a run at the Hawks - would he fit any need for us?
Wilson, Davies or Windhager. All release FOS into the guts, which is something we need to do as soon as he is physically ready.
