What a joke, we would’ve been crying about this back in the day trying to hold onto Carey etc… just because we have shit the bed, imagine in a few years trying to retain Mckercher/sheezel/wardlaw/fos 😂
There wouldn't be any restriction on the contracts clubs could offer their own players, it would only apply to contracts clubs could offer FA at other clubs

I'm from NSW, and during the 90s/00s there was a general feeling among the rugby league people I knew that the AFL was so far in front from an administrative viewpoint.
Not a chance you'd make the same argument these days

The AFL clubs are miles in front of NRL clubs from an admin level, but at the league level that has certainly shifted towards the NRL in recent times.

Andrew Dillon is a long way off it, unfortunately.

I feel like we are talking about different things

I’m talking about offering contracts to entice players to leave a club under free agency

Absolutely.

It’s a big reason why League people hate Aussie Rules so much and not vice versa, they feel like this was lorded over them for years.

The shoe’s now on the other foot and V’Landys regularly uses it as a talking point because he knows his punters eat it up.

Pretty strong whispers over last 24 hours that Windy has signed. Sorry, Gents.

The bloke who also said you got Ryan and Silvagni sorted about an hour ago? Interesting watch and I lurve me some hyperbole.

Thats cool, probably better just get our mids to get better defensively anyway.

You have an amazing group of youngsters. Remember it took the Giants awhile to get going when they had the influx of their first rounders. I expect you guys should be on the cusp of finals next year and, if you aren't, you should heave ho Clarko. And I'm off!

There's several topics media (apart from RoCo) won't touch because they're all AFL/big club simps.

The one I've always wondered about is salary cap enforcement.

Even if the AFL cared (they clearly conditionally don't) they're not the ATO or AFP.

They don't have any jurisdiction to check personal, company, friends and families accounts, business interests etc.

Clubs can and do break the rules in full daylight and they won't do shit.

Unless it's a shitlist club like Crows (Tippett) or I'm sure us if we stumbled into that world.
Have no intention of losing their place at the trough.

Hahaha, not that guy. There is a poster with a strong record who gave the indication last night. Anyways, he isn't signed until he is signed!

I was fascinated the last time you guys pulled this off, thought no chance you'd get them all done and you did. Maybe a tinge of jealousy but definitely fun to watch and at least it's a fellow minnow reaching for the ring.

Another simple tweak

Clubs that finish in the top 4 can’t offer a free regency contract above x

Clubs that finish 5-8 can’t offer a free agency contract above x + x

Bottom 10 Clubs can offer any contract they want
I reckon lowering the salary cap floor would go a long way to fixing the free agency imbalance. Then clubs with shitty or very young lists can bank some savings to make big offers to free agents - significantly outbidding teams with older/more talented lists.

100% agree

We chickened out. The tactic worked.

We have and continue to burn so much cap space on duds, that this scared us off?
And we’re still offering players like Coleman-Jones extensions.

All the talk from everyone in the afl was about Edwards - 150k isn’t going to scare anyone off
Back home? Don't you guys have enough midfielders ;)
Nmfc royalty by mick Nolan.

We should have enough mids but Judas , TT and wilphi aren’t no longer here

Fisher to WA has interest

Ford has all but quit

And Van dam great friends with the Kerch and Claude apparently has gone from not really giving a **** to enjoying his time with us. If he can find the professionalism required...

PREMIERSHIP DEE WEIGHS MOVE

MELBOURNE flag-winner Charlie Spargo is weighing his future, with the forward garnering interest from a number of clubs including North Melbourne.

Spargo is out of contract and an unrestricted free agent and has been offered a deal to stay at Melbourne, however the Kangaroos are among the clubs eyeing him as an acquisition.

The 2021 premiership player had interest from the Kangaroos at the end of 2023 and decided to stay at the Demons but has come to the end of his contract and is considering his future in coming weeks.

The 25-year-old has a strong link to North Melbourne, where his father Paul played 81 games between 1985-92, and the Roos have been in the market to add to their half-forward ranks.

Spargo played 10 senior games this year after having his 2024 campaign ruined by an Achilles injury, and will play out the season with the Casey Demons in the VFL finals in coming weeks.

He has played 108 games for Melbourne, including a career-best year in 2021 when he played 25 games, kicked 18 goals and was crucial for their forward-half game on the run to their drought-breaking flag. – Callum Twomey
