Would you rather Sparrow or Viney?
Reckon I said in December that Viney's season would be a write off with that Achilles.

No idea what we're going to do with him when he's finally back.

Steele has taken his spot, does all the things Viney does but better.

He isn't best 22 anymore with Steele there, can't play both of them. Sounds bad but not upset if he misses the whole year as it is pretty awkward for King at selection if Viney is fit.

I won't write him off because a number of guys I thought were cooked have thrived under King but I get the feeling he's going to need a significant role change.

Back pocket and doing kick ins. :fire:

Been saying for a couple of years that Viney should move into a defensive forward role. Don't care about his kicking too much, it's more having a physical type that can match up on attacking HBs who are used to running around in space and doing whatever they like.

Maybe he's not quick enough for that, but I'd rather they give that a try than throw him straight back into the middle.

I think Viney could play one of the high half forward pressure roles and maybe chop out one of Chandler lPickett and Sharp. Yet I don't see him infront of any of them.

Butt maybe his kicking will improve, I can see him being capable of running with the ball and hitting little 20m hit ups

Pressure forward definitely seems the most obvious choice, but yeah, to fit him in you'd have to drop a tall and go smaller.

With Viney's foot skills they would be kick outs... on the full.

His set shot kicking has been quite good in recent years, and even his snaps have been decent too. His kicking for depth to a moving target has always been poor though.

The clean slate that sKing brought with him would mean Viney shouldn't get a game unless he earns it above somebody else. Yes his surname has significance at the club and he's been great at times when fully fit, but just because he once was first choice mid doesn't mean he should get special consideration.

Viney also has a history of being poor when he had an interrupted pre-season. And this is his most interrupted pre-season ever. I wouldn't be shocked to see a "Jack will be focussing on a return in 2027" message come out at some point.

I think there's still a role for Viney inside, his clearance work has always been so underrated. Maybe not full minutes, but it's not that long ago that he was still a match winner in there himself.

The last really great game he played was late 2024 against the Gold Coast when both Petracca and Oliver were out of the side. His 2025 was very ordinary though.

You didn't rate his 3 vote game v the Saints last year? Clearly weren't watching as closely as the umpires ;)

Thought he was pretty good against the Giants R1 last year, and he did have a bit of a purple patch a few weeks either side of that Saints game with his contested work and tackling. Was great in the Freo win too.

We're 10th for clearance differential, and sKing was talking this week about us needing to improve defensively, so I can see him manufacturing a way for Viney to fit back in. I think, like Steele, he'll be told to tackle, win clearance and handball out, and to not kick too much. Not sure how it works on team balance but somehow sKing has found ways to make things work so far.

Geelong uses a tagger, he could do that I suppose.
Have they ever used two taggers? Or even three or four?

I've always said if you can get a spud to negate a star you'd be mad not too. We've got plenty of spuds so...

Was very good last year against the Saints, Giants, Crows, and the lowly Eagles, plus maybe a few more. Harsh judgment I reckon.

What’s the go with everyone suddenly wanting to keep Sparrow after 1 good game and 1 semi-decent game after being a whipping boy for the best part of the decade?
I don't think people suddenly suddenly wanting to keep Sparrow. Most post I've seen are saying they probably think he'll stay. danster168 said it would be disastrous but he's always backed him. I think what has changed is that he has looked better under King, and we've already lost a lot of experience in the midfield with Trac and Oliver gone. It's not just the fact he's played 1 decent game and we're all fan boys, just being realistic that it's probably better to keep in for the time being.
Look I'd rather have Viney sitting on the bench than Laurie that's for sure.
I also think he should play that pressure half forward role and could also rotate through the midfield at times. Just to give guys like Steele and Chin a rest.
I agree with that, Viney would be much more useful than Laurie atm. Having said that hopefully we could see another younger player coming through soon to fill that spot.
