We don't need a proper list build. We are rejuvenating talent to stay competitive while Tasmania dominate the draft.
Adding Neale and Walter makes us competitive while shipping of some old guys like Membrey, Sidey, Howe? Pendles?
Add in one of the best 18 year old midfielders in the country via the draft while guys like Allan, Hayes, Swadling and West all hopefully become permanent fixtures. That way we bridge our age while remaining competitive around Naicos.
Pretty sure while everyone was going to the draft when GC and GWS came in, Hawks traded their way to premierships

“The Pies do have their first-rounder this year and next year and believe (Jed) Walter is considering their overtures.” - per the above article.

Surely next years first rounder. I can’t imagine the reaction if we used this years.

If we don’t get Walter I can live with that. More important that we keep our first. However Neale is a no-brainer and Ballard would be a very, very welcome addition, hopefully on the cheap trade-wise if it’s a GC salary dump.

Next years surely. Give them a second round this year if they want it.

Do not part with the 2026 first unless Butters nominates us.

Hoping we don’t go mad for Walter. Just don’t see it there.

Grab Neale, draft Tex/Drever & bring in Ballard and we’re laughing

I'd almost argue our weak spot is small forwards at the moment rather than tall forwards.

The Bobby Hill situation is a noose around our necks, Elliott is out and Schultz/McCreery just don't impact the scoreboard. Our small forward line is now just pressure focused in the same vein as the dour Blair/Goldsack and Greenwood/Varcoe days.

Every time we've bounced back into serious premiership contention, it's off the back of rejuvenating the small forward line (ie Stephenson, WHE, JDG, Josh Thomas mosquito fleet in 2018 and Bobby Hill, McCreery, Elliott, Ginnivan in 2023)

Luckily quality small forwards can be unearthed in the back end of drafts. I'd want to keep backing in Harrison and Hayes and hopefully expose Saxena as well.

We seem eager if we’re offering that much $$. Next years first + this years second would be good.

Walter nominating us would help. Would pretty much confirm that it will get done.

How good would it be that they overpay for Walter and it shakes Rowell free to join us

If Hayesy wasnt injured I think its a different story. We can't control the jamie and bobby situations.
I'm looking forward to the second half of the year for Hayes and Harrison hopefully they can form a bit of chemistry and be something fun to watch over the years. Saxena has been tracking really well in the VFL and will have to come in sometime.

They go a lot earlier than they used to - the position has been massively re-rated.

Our weak spot is durable top end talent, pick a position any position.

Elliott is a massive loss so agree on your point. But would add that Elliott also played taller due to his over head marking strength. We saw Schultz trying to replace that, he gave it a crack but Elliott is a generational talent.

The question should be, what are we willing to give up to improve. Aside from N Daicos I think everybody else is tradeable at the right price.

Moore, really was not a fan of him being made captain. Now he can’t get on the park, rumours swirling around…trade him if we can get a first rounder plus.

I mentioned end of last season we should have traded Hill home. These issues were always going to be inevitable with his personal problems. The club really let us down with that decision. We are forced to retain him now.

Degoey, a genuine match winner there has to be value there.

We are not going to improve by you taking one first round pick to the draft. We need to trade some of our aging stars to premiership contenders and either use those picks to get younger players in or take them to the draft.

The lack of dynamism at ground level in our forward third is painfully apparent. Just can’t do anything when it hits the deck, compared to the top teams with Kozzie, Watson, Cameron, Mannagh, Bolton etc.

It’s why I want us to draft Texiera quite badly. He’s super exciting at ground level and could probably play there immediately. Hayes is developing nicely, Saxena is further along than I’d hoped. I really do miss Hill

There has to be both a desire for those “aging stars” to depart and a market for their services. I’m not sure either box is ticked. If teams force out players they never get good value

No one is giving us a 1st rounder for Moore. Hill is now less than worthless in a trade sense for acquiring a top end talent directly and his only real value is in retention or salary dump. JDG needs to finish the season in the same vein he’s played the past month to be worth anything and if he does that why are we trading him as one of our precious few top end talents?

The only 3 that could be desirable externally (I want to emphasise the could for all 3 here) and could land us access to top end talent are McCreery, Houston and IQ. I’m not holding my breath on it because you still need to make the pick you get in exchange count. The reason they work is because all three are contracted, their perceived value should be higher than their current output and they’re replaceable, IMO. By replaceable I don’t mean directly, but rather a good system should be able to find someone to fill the role of whatever they’re currently doing and develop over time.

The difficulty with any of this is moving players that should form the core of your next wave without upsetting the apple cart. You start pulling at that thread and who knows what dominoes collapse. Clubs need to come at these guys because if we float them we won’t get much other than headaches.
