First, Geelong doesn't even get all of its home games at GMHBA. Unlike Collingwood, which has played 14 home-and-away games at the MCG every season from 2011-2025, Geelong is regularly forced to give-up games to the MCG and give up part of its genuine home-ground advantage.I’ve given you a thorough review of why the idea of them being the benchmark is questionable. More than happy to hear the counter argument- “up for 20 years” could also be achieved by other teams if they had a massive HGA and therefore a walk up start to finals every year.
Losing 75% of finals between 2012-2019, reinforced my point - GMHBA gives them a massive leg up.
To be fair, it's the only way they can get a sell out.And playing in Ballarat when its snowing
Not sure where you get 8 home games - Geel have 10 at GMHBA this season.First, Geelong doesn't even get all of its home games at GMHBA. Second, the interstate travel numbers don't support the idea that Geelong gets an easy ride.
From 2011-2025:
Geelong played interstate clubs 133 times, Collingwood 127
Geelong hosted interstate clubs 59 times and travelled interstate 74 times
Collingwood hosted interstate clubs 62 times and travelled interstate 65 times
So, Geelong actually travelled interstate 9 more times than Collingwood over the same period while hosting fewer interstate sides.
As for the home record itself, the majority of Geelong's wins at GMHBA came against interstate teams and teams that often finished significantly below them on the ladder. That's exactly what you'd expect from a side that finished top four or thereabouts for much of the period. It's not evidence of an unfair advantage.
And if GMHBA was the automatic finals ticket as you claim it is, how do you explain Geelong finishing 10th in 2015, 8th in 2018, and missing finals in 2023?
The reality is that your claim that Geelong has a massive leg up by playing its home games at GMHBA is overstated. If there's a structural advantage in the competition, it's playing the majority of your home-and-away games at the MCG — the same ground that hosts most finals and every Grand Final.
If GMHBA is supposedly such an unfair advantage, why is Geelong only allocated 8 home games at GMHBA and forced to give up home games there while Collingwood gets 14 home-and-away games every year at the MCG?
