Ryan Daniels talking up Tobyn Murray this morning on 92.9 sounds like internally he’s getting huge wraps likened to mannagh and could defs play round 1
He played well in the intraclub. Wing/half forward. He’s up against Sharp, NOD, JOM, Banfield. If he can be an upgrade on any of those, that’s a bonus

FREMANTLE

  • Jesus Christ, Murphy Reid might be better than we thought in year two. My gut feel was it would be better to leave him forward another year, but in the Dockers’ intraclub last week he played mainly on-ball and was best on ground. He had 31 touches, set up multiple goals and racked up the clearances. When you watch the vision, his touch is crazy, particularly by hand. The person receiving the ball doesn’t even have to think about adjusting stride. Boy oh boy, wowee.
  • Hayden Young kept going forward, he kicked two goals, which is a watch-and-see going into the pre-season fixtures. Don’t love it, given he kicks goals from the middle anyway, but if that’s the switch to give more minutes to Reid, I don’t hate it either.
  • Tobyn Murray looks like the kind of guy you can depend on as a small forward. Repeat efforts, defensive intensity and makes the most of his opportunities when they arise. That’s as much as you can do in that position.
  • I’m also putting an early stake in the ground on Adam Sweid, almost every session there are one or two bits of vision that make your eyebrows lift. Not saying he’s going to come in and star - just underlining his name in case he does, so I can say I told you so…
I loved the look of Sweid in training.

Sweid won’t get in early tbh. He ll have a month at Peel first.
Jl isn’t keen on debuts early. Murray is 70/30 I reckon

I’d say he’s up against cox and Dudley for the 23rd spot just depends if we wanna play small ball or tall ball

Mason Cox ? No way. They won’t play 3 talls.
Dudley gets the spot. But if he’s quiet early in the season, he ll be dropped

Mitch Cleary will drop a ‘exclusive’ sometime soon.

Ffs. Jackson is always a worry
Just my opinion but the whole Jackson to Melbourne is dead because Kosi has signed. The whole thing was Melbourne feeding Cleary in order to push back against Kosi joining us.Obviously I will delete this post if I’m wrong.😎

Rare and an exception.
I’d imagine it’s JOM Sharp NOD in.
He ll play it safe
Tbf outside of Serong, Young in 2020 who else apart from Reid has actually justified selection that early? He did start Sturt round one 2020 as well.

He got Chapman in for Round 2 (??) And got Treacy and Dudley in far quicker than I expected.

Erasmus, Amiss, Johnson etc needed more time. Everyone else is barely worth talking about as part of this discussion.

Erasmus played quite early from memory.

In fact round 3 of his debut season:
“Erasmus made his AFL debut for Fremantle in the Western Derby in round 3 of the 2022 AFL season, collecting 18 disposals.“

Stanley played not too long after being a mid season draftee:
“Round 19, 2023, Fremantle vs. Sydney, at Optus Stadium, Perth”.

He was drafted around round 12/13 mid season draft.

Amiss was debut season - round 8 and also thrown in for the finals - after recovering from a kidney laceration injury.

Also Cooper Simpson played in his debut season also.

I think it is a case of him coming from a little bit back, nursing an injury upon start of his PS. So you will be correct I reckon. I favour Sweid starting at Peel.

The problem is the delayed start to WAFL true season. Pre-season game for Peel on 14/03, 21/03, 28/03.

Fremantle play round 1 in 14/03, round 2 21/03 and round 3 28/03/2026. So no proper WAFL games before round 4 of the AFL.

O'Meara would be locked in.

He wouldn't even be close to being in competition with Sharp or O'Driscoll for a spot, let alone Murray.

And it isn't even about playing it safe. He is clearly the better player.

I was specifically speaking about round one. Forgot about Simpson in this discussion tbh.

Erasmus was earlier than my memory says it was. I'll take your word for it - I didn't look it up before posting.

All good - I got a sense of that after I had posted. I didn’t check history of posts and there was a comment about Treacy and Dudley.

I thought it was Luke too. Then got told he was in his 40 playing for Purples.
23 was Trengeza. Seen him play for Peel but didn’t recognise him today at all.
I have seen plenty of Trengeza and dont think it was him (unless he has dyed his hair blonde)

From what i could tell Sanders was number 1

The new Peel ruckman has some agro in him which is good , too soon to tell but i think at best is a WAFL player, Riddle will be better prospect in the long term

Chappy and Walker both played well

Point is that I'm not sure JL is ultra-conservative with early season selections. When a player is super talented/ready he's generally pulled the trigger within the first few weeks.

It'll be interesting this year with a stronger squad than what JL has typically had. From memory Reid benefited from a few injuries to get into the round one team last year. As they say the rest is history.

Reckon Murray needs good form over the official pre season games to be considered best 23 for round one. Even then there's probably only one spot available tbh.
