Absolutely believable.

But I think if he’d known that while Draper was out, and he was sitting in the twos averaging 20+ stats and 40+ hitouts over the last 5 weeks while Goldy was looking every bit of his 36 years old and copping an absolute bath from Xerri and Nank - he’d not be thrilled.

There are different ways to look at everything, but I think he’s almost certainly played his last game in Essendon colours if he doesn’t get a game this weekend (and maybe even if he does). Without checking (or knowing anywhere you could check such a stat), I’d guess there would be very, very few rucks in the past who have made it at senior level being a third in line after 5 seasons.

Bryan is 22 and a half.

Rowan Marshall didn’t play regular AFL until he was 23.
O’Brien was 24 for the same.
McInerney debuted at 24.
Darcy Cameron was 25 before playing regular games.
Sean Darcy 23.
Briggs 24.
Xerri 23.
Nankervis 23.

Blicavs wasn’t playing ruck back then.
Gawn was 22, Witts 22, Stanley 22.

It’s actually really really common for ruckmen to take until they’re 22/23/24 before getting regular AFL games. It’s more unusual if they’re doing it earlier.

Shhh...

Let the doomers stew for awhile longer

This is what I don't understand about the people saying "player X" is going to leave if we don't play them. How do they know this to be true? Are they privy to the inside workings of the club and what's happening between the coaches and players? Or are they just making random assumptions looking in from the outside without any real knowledge.

For all we know the coaches have sat down with Bryan and they have a plan, and they're allowing him time to get things right in the 2's before he's thrown into the seniors. What's wrong with that? Maybe everyone is working towards the goal of improving him gradually... and guess what, that's what's happening. Maybe that's why he's showing the gains that he currently is, because the plan they have put in place is working just the way they want it to.

Makes way too much sense.

There really wouldnt be many sides he is walking into the number 1 ruck role

Plus he is contracted for another 12 months

Essendon probably have one of the weakest ruck departments, he should be thinking that in 18 months time he is as good as chance as being the man at Essendon as anywhere imo

Agree. There would be no sides offering him the number 1 spot yet.
Unless Scott does not rate him I can not see us letting him go.

Every player you’ve noted played key minutes by their 5th season.

I don’t think anyone’s said ‘he’s going to leave’. Just that he has reasons to.

He’d be moving to be the second ruck

Xerri was drafted in 2017 and is yet to player more than 12 games in a season - until this year, where he has looked great.

There is a reason so many mature age rucks are drafted, look at age and maturity instead of seasons played and you'll get a clearer picture.

Ha that’s a huge call. Maybe played his last game in Essendon colours even if he gets a game this weekend?
Source?
Or just your gut feel?
If gut feel then I disagree. Happy to agree to disagree too.

Absolutely only gut feel. Fair enough.

Given he and Goldy’s form, the only we he gets a game would seem to be from a Goldy injury before the Carlton game, as it sounds like Drapes could be back earlier than expected/after the bye.

Looking at it another way - there is no current first choice ruckman in the comp playing for the team that drafted him that has had to wait as long as Bryan has. Not one.

To me, that’d suggest he’s a (very) long shot to stay.

Cool, fair enough. 99% of stuff on here is opinion, it's what we come here to do, post our opinions. in this case, I have a different opinion, which is that he won't leave :)

You’re entitled to stick to a silly argument that ignores age and that plenty of ruckmen aren’t drafted at 18 like Bryan was I guess.

That’s what I said but I have been reading this thread backwards.

Maybe he's just a (very) long shot to be our first choice ruckman?
