25th anniversary of Collingwoods last game at Kardinia park!!!

Come the 10th of July it will be 25 years exactly since Collingwood last played a game in Geelong, How many years do you guys think it will be before they play there again? and will it happen before Pendles retires? he might retire with 400+ games none of which played at Kardinia and close to 300 of which played at the MCG.

At Geelongs request prior to the reno at Catpark.

We don't request it.
We get told we are only getting 9 true home games so we then request that other 2 are against teams that maximize the crowd.

With the new stand we need a crowd in the region of 80k at the G to make the same money as in Geelong. That doesn't leave many teams as options for the Melbourne home games.

Originally it was Geelongs request and not for the reason you stated.

However now it is different.

If Geelong want Pies to go there make it happen and play one of the other 10 Vic teams at the G...

Not sure about 2023 but in 2022 the AFL’s financial report put their financial profit from attendance at $4 million.

Across 9 games per round plus 9 finals this works out to be what, a profit of $20,000 a game.

So a few thousand either side of that is what it’s costing the game.

Gee I’m sure the AFL big wigs are gathering the world’s foremost economic experts to try and solve that one for the 1-2 rounds every few years when your s**t truck mob of yellow and black low breeds hitch hike their way down the highway to steal chocolate bars from the Corio Bay 7-11.

Well thought through, as always.

Your 4K extra seats would net you guys about 1-1.5m a year from your home games.

Considering you borrowed $142m that’s less than a 1% return.

That is quite possibly the worst investment in the history of mankind bar taking a loss.

And on top of that the AFL is STILL losing money every time you play a big club.

So yes it’s not a troll. Geelong is a financial liability to the game. It’s just maths.

And you wonder why finals aren’t played down there.

Is this your professional evaluation as a self-admitted finance guru earning huge $$$'s in the field?

Dude the AFL loses money any time a big 4 goes there. Geelong is literally a liability to the game.

You had $142m to sort the capacity out and you did f all with it.
one thing the Cats have never had to do unlike your tiggers is sell home games to interstate venues to survive. A big 4 side should never have to do that. Pull your head in this thread isn't about you or your team but you insist on filling it will your BS. It's well past time the Pies played at the Cattery and the sooner they do the better. BTW I think I speak for the majority of posters on here

What people forget is that the MCG teams have no real home ground whereas all the interstate teams and Geelong do. And even the Pies over the past few years have had quite a few graveyard shift games. The point remains though that the blockbusters are generated by crowds turning up, not the names of the teams playing. This year having the slots the Pies have played in has been a disadvantage. They have played with the shortest prep despite it being the longest season and played against the Swans with 2 days less despite starting early in March as part of only 4 games for the round. They then have to back up with another 6 day break so have played 3 games while the majority have played only 1. When it's all said and done it is the player list that contributes more to who wins the most. Teams like Sydney and Brisbane double dipping with academy picks in the 1st round and with access to father/sons too provides the best advantage in the competition. Adelaide and Perth clubs and the Vic clubs can only access academy selections at 40 or above despite have fewer academy kids availalbe to them. It does not matter how much money a club has generated by members, it is the playing list which creates the wins.

So the Pies playing an interstate team at the MCG with 70,000 fans influencing the umpires isn't providing a home game advantage?

Or playing against a Marvel tenant?

Dumb statement.

What’s the average ticket price for a Geelong home game?

The formula is

4,000 x average ticket price x 9 home games divided by $142m x 100

Go.

Yes and as we all know, the way they worked all this out beforehand is to say ‘ok, we will borrow this money against the only known way we can get a return on the investment: the ticket prices for those particular extra seats that we add, for the 9 AFL games that we host each year. The ground can never be used for anything else. We cannot be used for any Big Bash games, Women’s Big Bash games, international cricket matches both men’s and women’s, concerts etc. We cannot change our profit margins both at AFL matches or these other events, to influence our income. The only way we can make any money back, is through those 4000 seats and the ticket prices we charge.

Everybody happy with this?’

They didn’t go through any civic or civil planning process, no financial projections process and they just thought ‘f*** it: let’s haemorrhage some money.’

That’s how it all came about.

Because you know way more about how these things work.

I saw a video on TikTok of Eddie with Kane Cornes. Eddie was saying in the renegotiation of finals to the hosting teams home state, the MCC want 14 games featuring Collingwood at the MCG. So thinking about it

9 Collingwood home games at MCG
2 Marvel home games (what the AFL want)
5 Interstate trips
Gather round
5 away games at MCG (to make 14)

That leaves 1 game spare. This year that 'spare' is the way game against North at Marvel

No reason it cant be a game against Geelong in Geelong 1 year in say 5

Is it an advantage or disadvantage for the Pies to play a Geelong home game in Geelong?
You won't get a straight answer mate, the cognitive dissonance at play to try and avoid actually answering the question says all we need to know about MCG tenants and the absolute leg up they get.

We already do? We play Hawks Easter Monday every single year which always draws huge crowds no matter where the teams are on the ladder. Then depending on the draw we play another tenant twice at the G...once as a "Home" game which is rubbish and once as an Away game (which is totally fair). This year it's Carlton.

Every other club who has called the MCG "Home" at one stage or another has made the trip down the highway... Carlton, Essendon, Hawthorn, Richmond, Melbourne.

There is one club that has found a variety of excuses not to do so.
With 40k capacity, there's no excuse anymore.

I reckon the players couldn’t care less if we had to play them at Geelong, pies travel record is pretty good.

Prefer that then Etihad games that are “home” games vs teams who it is actually their home ground, where we have a shithouse record.

What about the smaller vic clubs who have to make the numbers at Kardinia so clubs like Essendon,Collingwood and Carlton never have to play there. is it fair for them? Selfishly I'd love for St Kilda to host all away games against Geelong at Marvel stadium. But the part of me that wants the semblance of a fair league doesn't want that.
Well stop wasting money paying out CEO's and coaches; stop requesting home games against us at the MCG and stop putting your hand out for an extra $10 M per year in AFL distributions. When then this happens and your mob starts to pay its way then you can start to make some demands.

Cats v Pies game at KP would be awesome. Get in a reasonable contingent of enthusiastic Pies fans, that would wake up the cats fans too and in a stadium where the the majority of seats are actually close to the ground unlike at the 'G it would be quite the cauldron-like spectacle.
You’d upset their knitting.

so once we stop getting money distributed to us we will get a fair fixture? once we are outta debt do we get more televised games as a way to attract new fans? and once all the poor clubs are out of debt will Collingwood play in Geelong? , Or are they going to be kept as the only team that gets the privilege of playing all games against the cats at your home ground for the forseeable future? and since West Coast as so rich why don't they get a similar benefit of playing certain clubs at their home ground forever,
