Past #26: Tarryn Thomas [Part III] - [C.Twomey] AFL rules TT is eligible to play in all competitions as of 14 October

I don’t see this as much of a TT thing, this is the AFL protecting their financial interests by selectively applying when they want to get involved.

There is just no consistency to anything they do.

People are naive if they think this same process would be applied if it involved one of their star players, big clubs or expansion teams etc.

The AFL know they can use a small club to promote a message and gain some social brownie points because it doesn’t impact their bank balance. As pointed out if this was Collingwood the AFL would leave this well alone as they know to get that large a supporter base off side doesn’t end well for them.

That’s why players like Martin and DeGoey were hit with a wet lettuce leaf. Got to keep the masses happy, because they keep the bonuses flowing.

Very true

The commentator I listed also played for us. He has been seemingly given way more opportunity.

So there’s certainly some sort of a difference, between who they pick and choose to make an example of, it ain’t just team based.

What i find strange is that roughly 90% of people believe he cant play at our club but at another club, yep thats fine. For something done in his private life.
I dont understand why its acceptable for him to play elsewhere but not at North. Its like North is the only one being punished.
Exactly. I said yesterday, the fairest thing is if he doesn't play for us, he doesn't play anywhere.

I’d like Healy to explain how we could have drafted Butters with our first pick being in the 40s in 2018… even if we kept our 1st round pick, it was a pick after PAs anyway.
Maybe there is a loophole that we don’t know about?
They will say anything to suit their narrative.

Wayne Carey was sacked by Channel Nine and 3AW after his domestic violence incident in the US, and he was persona non grata for a few years after that.

I’ve been trying not to reply too much because I don’t want to get caught in arguments with people whose mind is clearly set, but * me, the mental gymnastics to try and make this anyone but Thomas’ fault is revolting.
how on earth do you think i said it wasn't his fault?

it's a theory of how he got into this mess. he's been off and on with this single mum for years, even after the court appearance. she clearly has dirt on him and went to the AFL after they broke up again.

also "It comes as a source close to another woman, who was previously linked to Thomas, detailed his allegedly abusive nature." - doesn't make my theory that outrageous.

but again, i'm not saying it's not his fault - can ppl get nuance here or does it always have to be black and white?

also - why are you responding to me specifically? duckyeah has been on the turps running completely ridiculous theories that have no evidence what so ever. at least i've provided some substantiaition. i know you clearly hate nuance but sometimes things aren't as they seem, especially when it's not in a proper court being trialled.

I don’t go trawling this thread looking for the most egregious takes, yours just jumped out at me. For what it’s worth, I manifestly disagree that you have “provided substantiation” - I am baffled as to how you can consider the opinion you’ve put forward as anything of substance, but anyway.

Just like they are protecting their financial interests by endorsing the GWS sponsorship with TAB despite all the community harm caused by gambling. Ive spent time explaining to my kid why gambling is bad (which he understood instantly as it ain't hard), but now an AFL team is going to be running around with it plastered on their jersey I guess. Are AFL players still meant to be community role models? The AFL would say yes, but our own judgement should tell us otherwise. Thomas shouldn't have his career ended by this, and North shouldn't be punished as a result.

Makes it pretty clear there what is currently still being decided.

If North are legally allowed to sack him for breach of contract now or we have to put up with him until the end of the year and keep paying him.
I find it unbelievable that AFL contracts are so poorly constructed that clubs are still on the hook for full contracted player payments when that player has caused himself to be unavailable for practically an entire season for something they have done in their private life. If it was in the heat of the battle on a footy field fighting for your club, I can live with that, but not for what TT is about to get suspended for. If North can't withhold wages, perhaps they can claw money back by imposing huge fines for what he has done, which has clearly damaged the North brand. In European football/soccer it isn't unheard of that players are fined in excess of a million dollars when they have caused themselves to be suspended for stupidity or they have been stood down by their clubs for unprofessional behaviour. It is always linked to how much they earn. Contracts need to allow for that and serve as a deterrent for players engaging in diabolical behaviour.
