So this is the text in question as far as we know?

"And for them girls I abuse I would do again,” he wrote to a woman.
“After what they did to me if you do me wrong I will let you have it.”

Its clear he isn't directing to this to any women he'd previous abused and clearly says its in retaliation to be being wronged. How does anyone know being wronged was some sort of abuse towards him?

Of course he's an idiot for putting this type of thing in text but, but he hasn't abused anyone with it. He's shooting his mouth off probably trying to convince new women the only people he abuses are those that 'wrong' him.

Definitely guilty for being a fool and shooting his mouth off .........IF those texts are all there is to it.

If so id think the AFL are likely in talks with their lawyers and players association for potential blow back.

We know having sex with underage girls is illegal. Is that more abuse than nasty texts to a third un effected party?
Why have so many clubs and the AFL tolerated sexual abuse of minors? But AFL will crush a player for nasty texts?

It’s a text. The Herald Sun never indicated it was one in the hands of the AFL. It’s just one somebody leaked to Instagram.

And that is where the problem lies with anything the AFL does.

Dustin Martin actually threatened physical harm to someone with a pair of chopsticks and the AFL did * all. Next minute nasty text messages and they are going all Robocop.

The way that you're twisting this stuff is getting out of hand. You're intentionally playing up what Martin did and downplaying what Thomas did.

What if we word it as "Martin just made a nasty remark to someone at a restaurant, while Thomas repeatedly abused, stalked and threatened multiple women over an extended period of time".

This has been two years of this behaviour from Thomas, directed at multiple people. It wasn't a one off thing.

This attitude of "if we were a bigger club then the AFL wouldn't unfairly take this abusive arseh*le from us" is trying too hard to play victim in this.

All other issues aside, I hate to be the one to tell you but receiving death threats via text is not a normal thing. If you're getting lots of them, then you should probably do something about that.
LOL - If I did that I'd be the one locked up.

I’m not downplaying it all. I am highlighting that the AFL has a very long track record of picking and choosing when it wants to involve itself, regardless of instances being similar in nature.

I have never said Thomas shouldn’t be suspended, but I said that it should be done by the club and not the AFL.

Can anyone prove what you are claiming has happened post him going through his last enforced layoff, because if all it is are a few dumb text messages post the previous allegations then the AFL are overstepping the mark.

Thats why i used a big IF
"IF those texts are all there is to it"

All good, I was answering your first question. My attention to further detail is lacking tonight.

I can see some clear and important distinctions in the nature of those two issues.

One is a pattern of abusive behaviour, in writing, directed at people that he is in relationships with and perpetrated over an extended period of time, including after been given a huge wake-up call and training program.

The other is making a one-off threat.

Neither is acceptable behaviour but they are very different in terms of punishment.

If Dusty was going around and threatening wait staff in restaurants all over Melbourne and was facing charges over it, then he was suspended and went through a training program about how to treat wait staff, and kept doing it anyway, then your comparison would be valid.

trying to convince new women the only people he abuses are those that 'wrong' him.
I'm not necessarily saying that this is Tarryn's inention with this text, but this very much is step one in the "known abusers playbook to start a new cycle of abuse with someone else"

"I only abused them because they deserved it. I wouldn't do that to you. You're different, but my previous actions are justified."

Then what proceeds is the abuser creating scenarios, sometimes out of thin air through gaslighting or extreme reactions to simple things, that lead to this new person becoming deserving of the abuse.

They have set it up from the start for the blame for all this to be on the abused person, which they continue to reinforce. And boom, new cycle of abuse.

Which is why people just calling him a boofhead, a stronger expletive, or some equivelant of boys will be boys, sits pretty poorly with me.

I'm not saying it's definitive. But there are parallels.

* the media scumbag who bailed up George and Plusdick while they were enjoying a good win, to ask about TT.
Trash heap journos.
To be honest I also thought them bailing up Gawn at an auskick event to talk about trafficking drugs was shit. Scum environment when it comes to ‘media’ these days.

Utter ******* is Healy
I thought Kane Cornes was bad when it came to our club but Healy's comments on our stuff up in Tarryn's draft have shown me that he's doing what Kane does and that's baiting people to either get more clicks or to watch his show, seriously, if last year Tarryn had played 15 or more games and ripped it to shreds do you think Healy wouldn't change his mind and say what a great pick up in the draft was Tarryn Thomas. Even saying this after what we've gone through and on top of what's happening at the moment, the last 4 years, its a despicable act and very cringeworthy by laying the boots in again when common sense tells you that at the time, we made the right decision. Unfortunately we can't board the "Enterprise" and get "Scotty" to get us to warp back in time and pick again. The media and people like Gerard are but a fly on the tv sometimes, you see it and straight away you want to swat it!

The good days of good journalism and knowledgeable commentators seem to be a thing of the past. Its funny because in the last few days I've actually thought WHO would be the first person to not only lay the boots in but say something so stupid one would think its Kane Cornes stupidity and low and behold, look who makes the first play. A more rounded approach is needed in this situation but people like Gerard WANT to be one of the first to say something like this to get a response, I actually can't believe he had to do a "what if" scenario and so, we know pretty much what's happened, we don't need grubs like Healy to sprout his perfect blueprint for "drafting", if it was up to Gerard six or seven years ago he would've made so many *uckups he wouldn't have lasted very long at all, I can give you the strong tip! NORTH MELBOURNE FOREVER! :north::north::north:

I get what you're saying but the problem here is that it appears he is going to be suspended for the precursor to the crime he hasn't committed as though he has already committed it. It's like convicting someone of rape because they stole women's underwear from a clothesline, or convicting someone of serial murder because they tortured a small animal. We can appreciate that those actions are precursors to serious and violent crimes, but our criminal justice system only allows for charges to be laid after a crime has occurred. Otherwise, it's pre-crime from Minority Report which is highly dystopian.

Healy of course is one of those people who always knows the answer in hindsight. What an a*******.

Absolutely understand that as well. And im not even trying to be like where theres smoke theres fire, because there is far too much that remains unknown to us (and with good reason), more so to counter the dismissals of such behaviour. "Just texts" and such.

North would have been insane not to match the bid on Tarryn. That is the biggest hindsight call in the history of journalism if they were saying he was a bad choice at 8. Like you can know "better not pick him, he might send some incredibly stupid and ugly texts when he is 22 years old" when he is 18. Yes, I remember there being some professionalism concerns when Tarryn was in his draft year, but they were minor things, like a lot of people his age that go and get drafted and become stars. Nothing to suggest he would get the biggest suspension ever over text abuse.

I honestly never thought I'd be at the point where losing Tarryn didn't matter to how our footy side went cos he is of the most talented players I've seen. But (as the saying goes) we have cake and icing now. I mean it still matter but there was a time not that long ago when this would have really hurt the side on field and I don't think it does anymore (we can cover it.)

What bugs me is that we've been involved with him for nearly a decade, during a very important time for young people and how they turn out and this is the result. I can't help but think we've failed him as a club cos we let him get away with this sort of shit earlier when he should have been pulled up on it. I remember seeing Jy Simpkin in an airport with Higgo before we even drafted TT and he was hanging on every word Higgo said when they weren't posing for photos with us or talking to the kids.

He needed better mentoring and we missed that.

If we lose him and that looks like a 95%+ possibility, then we need to take some responsibility for it as well.

Remember though, that there were warnings even before that draft.

I do agree however, that a football club would expect to be able to straighten out any stupidity related to immature behaviour and help develop and grow a reasonably decent adult if that person is willing to put their head down and dedicate themselves to a career.

I do find it ironic that Laura Kane, probably one of the people who has the most to do with him since he was 15, basically gave him his marching rights the other day.

Also wrt what I just said above - his career at North has been a chaotic time for the club and the country as a whole so there is a chance in a more stable time we could have provided better leadership to him.

Horseshit.

He failed us. At a time we could least afford it too.

Yeah. Kind of sad.

Look, you make your own bed and have to lie in it but often its the bed you learn to make that you have to lie in and if no one shows you how to do it properly...

It depends. If there were major things that were of concern, I can understand a club not drafting a talented player. It happens in a lot of drafts. Schoenmaker is an example from this last draft who had concerns that were bigger than anything Thomas had at the same age. A lot of clubs passed on him for that reason, he almost went undrafted. If Schoenmaker goes on to do something incredibly stupid and gets himself suspended, then St Kilda might be blamed for drafting him, and I think that would be fair. Especially if they used a high pick on him. But honestly I think even they did the right thing using a pick 60 and backing in their club to help him become a professional human and footballer.

With Tarryn his stuff was more about dedication to his schooling and professionalism iirc. Nothing to suggest he wasn't worth a top pick. North would have been crazy not to match the bid. Adelaide made maybe a worse decision because they actually bid a pick 8 on him, and there was a couple of local players that might be equally as talented as Tarryn at their bid too. They ended up taking Chayce Jones and ruined his confidence after he had a pretty good debut year. Chayce went backwards for awhile, hopefully he has a great year to continue on his last year which was good, but Adelaide had a WAY worse draft than North Melbourne.
