So he’s not ā€˜better’, he’s just playing a different role that makes his stats (the only way to judge a player) look better
Yep

He’s playing a more offensive game because this role allows him to. Better stats and more time on the television where people can see and notice him.

After finally catching up with a replay of the game, I’m amazed that this bloke hasn’t been able to do this more often over the last 2 seasons. He was our best player and it’s like he stepped up with the added responsibility. Of our best defensive 6 at the beginning of the year we are missing Reid, McKay, Ridley, and now McGrath who is midfield. Then Laverde goes down mid game leaving a defensive unit with only Redman having any genuine experience - first and second year players all around him (and Prior still finding his feet). He is a very talented footballer who seems to fire only when a switch is flicked which seemed to be the case in the weekend.

This is just an opinion because I’m not privy to what the coach is instructing players to do but I don’t think it’s a switch that’s been flicked or a reaction to greater responsibility.

I think our preferred outlet from defense (rightly or wrongly) is McGrath and with him playing midfield the ball is now going through Redman more. Or maybe it’s the other way around and Redman is preferred as our medium defensive stopper but the absence of McGrath from the backline means he’s being pushed into a more counterattacking role.

There’s that. But I also think you could see him getting into the holes more, backing his judgment to interject in opposition forward thrusts, and becoming the proactive defender. He seemed to take on an all-encompassing role when Lav went off which is what impressed me. The flick, in a sense, was the inevitable requirement for him to step up and take the responsibility as the senior figure.

i get it - remember when Call Me Cake got banned and DERO was on holiday? your posting for that week was amazing, like you stepped up to fill the gap they had left

I am indeed the Red Dog of this board. I was only able to hit those goals on the run from outside 50 though due to the intuitive dish-offs you gave me coz you knew you couldn’t make the distance.

Dero and Cake are definitely hard to replace though. Such similar beacons of defense. I could never hope to intercept like them. DERO will love this assessment I’m sure 😁

It looked like he ruptured his achilles (similar to drapes went down suddenly while running) so Im relieved it was just an ankle. He battled on through clear discomfort so its a bit harsh to pot him.

Great stuff from Redman, showing some balls here standing up for your club. Really shows how much respect has been lost for Merrett. Will be sad to see him go but you can’t help but feel he will have lost his teammates with this move (again).

"But myself being a leader, or the captain of the football club in his scenario, you have to potentially think about things differently because it's not just you that this impacts, it's the whole club. It's 'Scotty' [Brad Scott] as the coach, it's us as players, and all the fans as well.

"He's the best player I've ever played with, so of course you want him to be at the club and at this moment in time he's my captain. With that being said though, it remains to be seen if that's the way it works going forward."

It's interesting when you consider every bit of that would have been vetted by the club, if not given to him line by line to read out.
Not necessarily (it’s Twomey after all, and it’s the off-season so players are incommunicado with the club beyond informing them of their location for ASADA purposes)…

but I do like the possibility.
