AFL Player 27: Mason Redman šŸ• - Goes whack

The biggest issue I have is that he's never shown the ability to accumulate a lot of the ball.

As for his "natural position" he played half forward/wing for most of his first 2 years before we moved him into defence

It just reeks of lazy old Essendon trying to take shortcuts by changing him from his usual position instead of drafting pure mids.
This is one to which I'd turn a blind eye. Allows Ridley a place in the backline and Redman becomes a weapon going i50. Potentially pushes Zaka out. Competition with Cuts and Ham. Good development.

Sooner or later you're going to get a go in the middle at Essendon. I remember when it was Mark Johnsons turn around 2005 because he "has a great tank".

i don't mind it the move either TBH. I don't understand why they don't just do it instead of comparing him with a 6 time All Australian flanker and speculating about how great he could be. Just comes across as amateur hour.

I would be writing his name on the team sheet on a half back flank in permanent marker for the next 10 years.

He is one of our most reliable one on one defenders already and arguably our most reliable user off of half back already.

Having quality half backs who can distribute the ball is crucial in modern footy (hell, Clarkson moved arguably Hawthorns two best midfielders of this era to halfback at different points in Hodge and Mitchell) and he is too good to move.

Just draft more/better midfielders.

Let's say we draft a couple of mids. There's still a development/readiness gap to wait for. Redman has taken 5 years to get to this point and the cupboard looks pretty bare beyond Hibberd.

Ridley is ready to hold a backline spot; has shown he has defensive smarts and delivers well by foot.

I'm keen to see Redman through the middle.

Burgoyne spent significant time off half back as well.

Don’t think he’s a midfielder. Much rather see him consolidate as premier half back who can lock down & create.

I really get annoyed when we start to try & reinvent players purely for the sake of filling voids in the side & compromising a players natural instincts in the process.

Just more stupid talk from someone who is striking me more and more as having no self-awareness.

Redman is a 5th year player who has played about 4 VFL quarters on-ball (as a third year player).

When exactly is he going to start the project of developing the craft to play as a midfielder? Or is "tall mid" some sort of qualifier that excludes any actual midfield performance?

What I think is more likely is that it could be some sort of attempted power grab/arse coveirng. He has to have some genuine cunning to be in his job after 20 years (simply just playing the numbers at every other club).

Ever notice how it's essentially all first and second round picks Dodorob has taken since 2014 who he talks up as being midfielders?

I keep reading EFC fans complaining about trying to turn flankers into midfielders.

What is the median quarters played in the midfield for Langford, Laverde, Francis, Redman, Ridley and Begley played in the middle? It would be lucky to be double digits. I ask about median instead of average because any average is skewed to the point of irrelevance by Langford who, as the least competitive of the lot buy a long way, is the only player we've tried to developed in the middle. Hell, Laverde would probably be an outlier with his 15 quarters over 5 years.

There is clearly a disconnect between recruiting and player development/coaching. If anyone running the club had half a brain this issue would have been addressed. You can't have your recruiter burning picks on players the coaches won't use in the positions the recruiter wants them for.

Forget Rutten and Caracella. We need Brad Pitt and Phillip Seymour-Hoffman.

You do realize the recruiters and coach are in constant dialogue in what they are looking at/ what they need.

Of course I do. However, at no point does that mean that Dodoro doesn't still pick what he thinks is the best midfield option and that is clearly what he is doing and it's clearly not working.

If there has been a strategy with the use of our first and second round picks dating back to 2014 that has been implemented I can't see it.

Internal politics aside, do you think Redman has the capacity to play on a wing?

Of course he does. He's also shown the ability to break away from a stoppage, albeit at the lower level. That's just raw ability, though. He's going to need to train in the positions at some point. That we brought in Cutler last year suggests he's not being looked at on a wing any time soon.

"...a bit like Corey Enright was for the Cats"

So not a midfielder in any sense of the word.
I think what they meant by that was that if Corey Enright was at Essendon we would have recruited him and tried to turn him into a mid.

Mason Redman won me over when I watched him in the reserves one day at Princess Park when he gave away the free and picked up the ball and turned around and threw it at the head of his opponent. I can still hear the thwack noise it made. You were there BrunoV . I remember you struggling to walk back to your icecream van given your discomfort downstairs.

I was, like, so already in love with him by then.

Could just be my waning memory or did Corey Enright not play anywhere near enough midfield minutes to be considered a part time midfielder? Does Dodoro think Joel Corey and Corey Enright were the same person?

Enright was a rebounding defender. He was an integral part of Geelong's brilliant zone defence but I can't think of anyone (except obviosuly Dodoro) who would have called him a midfielder.
