The VFL can be misleading but from what i saw of Redman's stints in the midfield there he looked very good. Is good in traffic, has speed out of a contest and an excellent tackler. I think someone with his tenacity and mongrel could be good for midfield, which can at times, look out-muscled. Worth a shot anyway. They must be going to Redman a go in the middle or why say it? Hopefully it works out but it could be another Langford scenario where he goes just ok based on talent/determination but its not a natural fit.
If he was knocking the door down to play through there you would think we would have seen glimpses already surely.
No official word about a potential injury?May have an issue. Has not trained much in the last week and a bit.

I agree about the tenacity and mongrel elements. If he has the appetite for that then it just comes down to his ability to make sense of it all in there (and be able to execute at this level of course). The VFL can be misleading but from what i saw of Redman's stints in the midfield there he looked very good. Nothing from anyone at this stage. No official word about a potential injury?
Agree he could be an elite hbf, but we're already pretty stacked in that area and I don't see the harm in trying it out if it means we could have a more effective midfield. Hbf is in many ways an easier position to excel at so if you've got a player who could offer more for the team on balance then try it out. It's not like we're contending for a flag. I'm (getting way ahead of myself but also...) thinking a similar trajectory to Elliott Yeo.Someone has said this before but id have Redman in permanent marker locked in to a halfback flank. You can see already that he has AA written all over him. Excellent 1on1 defender, line breaking run and a laser sharp kick. We should hit the next couple of drafts or trade/free agency for more midfielders rather than mess with Redman.
If they tried him in the guts and we got Yeo or close to id be as thrilled as you. I just love the idea of a backline featuring Saad, Ridley and Redman for the next 5+ years. You can just trust those 3 to do their jobs and punish teams the other way.Agree he could be an elite hbf, but we're already pretty stacked in that area and I don't see the harm in trying it out if it means we could have a more effective midfield. Agree - keep him in that spot. He's such an asset thereSomeone has said this before but id have Redman in permanent marker locked in to a halfback flank. Yes, because Cutler, Ham and Langford have shown that they're all one way runners. Apart from Zaka, how many of our midfielders would you say are "one way" runners? We've been recruiting these guys for a while now.I can see the benefits of leaving him there, but our strength in defence going forward is great even without him there. Francis is just as good by foot if not better.
Ambrose Hurley Saad
Gleeson Francis Ridley
Gleeson is equally if not more capable in the air and has excellent vision of what's ahead of him. Also has a decent bit of pace.
Redman on a wing makes good sense defensively. How many times have we whined about the lack of two-way running from Zaharakis. Redman is a guy with a big engine who will actually defend his side of the ground. The flipside of that is that he is an excellent kick going inside fifty. Again, for all the whinging here about the lack of quality forward fifty entries, the conservatives here still want to keep Redman plonked at HB. The defence at the back of the ground is sustainable. Redman is a key to our defence going full-ground. We can finally help Zaka towards his coaching ambitions.
We've been stale for two decades folks. If we're not winning finals, we have nothing to lose by trying.
Are they? I didn't mention them.Yes, because Cutler, Ham and Langford have shown that they're all one way runners. Apart from Zaka, how many of our midfielders would you say are "one way" runners? We've been recruiting these guys for a while now.
Let's talk about the downside of pushing Redman up the ground. He's shown an inability to find a lot of the ball when playing midfield in the VFL, he hasn't been a 360 degree player, and his attack on the man and the ball is actually really important from half back.
You mention one of the three predominantly outside midfielders of round 1 having a lack of two way running. I'm simply pointing out that the other two and the one primed to replace him have all shown that they do.Are they? I didn't mention them.
Langford is a plodder and he has demonstrated that well. He's better suited to the forwardline. For now, while Ham is developing (his size especially) I'd have Redman and Cutler on wings, making competition for that position.
You can talk about other one way runners in midfield if you like. I'm interested in what we do with Redman in the Redman thread, and there's plenty of upside to trying him on a wing. Other watchers have said he has looked very promising in a midfield role, including having very good awareness in traffic. Full-ground defence can be a thing at our club, with players like Redman, Smith, Walla and Towner leading the way.
FTFYAre they? I didn't mention them.
Langford is a plodder and he has demonstrated that well. He's better suited to an office job
So he gets lost in the middle at VFL level?? Ah I get it now....he's a 'Dodoro Mid'.
You either do that or look for trade currency where you have depth - or both.I think people are overstating the difference between the wing and hbf in modern footy. We should be maximising the amount of talent we pick in our best 22. If you break up the non KP players on our list into segments based on talent level compared to your average AFL teams.

For mine we should be open to moving the magnets around to fit in the our more talented players. For example if moving Redman to a wing to fit in Gleeson ahead of Guelfi is a no brainer for me.
*Can play as a KP
Okay, good. I was talking about Redman. Yes, both Cutler and Ham can play the role. I have high hopes for Cutler. Many Brisbane supporters lamented his tendency to avoid contact and his seeming inability to play in a full-ground defensive system. I'm hoping he'll fix that under Truck. Obviously his height lends itself to linking up the play and his lkng kicking can be a weapon if he can hit his targets. Redman on the other hand is that defensive player. He may not have the height but he has the tank to find separation from his man and will hit his targets going inside fifty. I've seen enough of Redman's work around the ground to be ambitious about what he could bring. You mention one of the three predominantly outside midfielders of round 1 having a lack of two way running. I'm simply pointing out that the other two and the one primed to replace him have all shown that they do.
Langford is almost perfect for a role on the wing. His biggest downside is like Redman's, a lack of accumulation. However Langford has shown to be adept to being the link man between the arcs and is a 360 degree player.
As am I. Many people whinge about trying to turn flankers into midfielders, citing Langford as an example, yet want one of the ones who is perfectly suited to a half back flank to play on a wing. Most of the people arguing for Redman into the midfield have said that they think his aggression and skills could be useful in an advanced role. Having actually watched him playing midfield in the VFL, he gets lost there and really wasn't suited to it at all. Langford, in contrast, dominates the lower level when playing midfield and looks a million bucks.
There's a reason Redman got moved from a midfield/half forward role into a half back role after about 18 months at the club. He's better when the play is unfolding before him.
As for the team defence thing, it's already started being a thing. Like you can tell.
Langford was a bust on the inside. He's been pretty good on the outside this year although we only have 2 pre season games and round 1 to go off. HFF/Wing is a good area for Langford to work in. Redman plays on half the wing from HBF anyway, he just doesn't start centre bounces on the side of the square. I think the people wanting for him to be looked at in the midfield were thinking inside, possibly becoming a Yeo type.Okay, good. I was talking about Redman. Ordinarily I would be one of the voices bemoaning efforts to convert a back flanker into a mid, but Redman is an exception. I'm fine if we keep him at half back but we can't then expect Gleeson to stick around. Ham will take time. Redman and Cutler on the wings would be ideal.
Langford is a forward or bust for mine. A bit over the midfield experiment. Someone even said he was Pendlebury-like.

Im in the leave Redman where he is camp. Also happy that the Langford being an inside bull experiment seems to have been canned. Keen for us to hit the next couple of draft for midfielders to compliment the acadamy talls we'll be getting.I like Redman on the outside, HBF / Defensive Wing working forward; he's aggressive, good overhead, good by foot and has a tank. Don't think he'll be a regular centre bounce kind of player, but your half-backs do need to be able to work up on the wings these days, they've kind of melded in to a single role in some ways.
Langford is a solid HFF option; can hit a target going i50, kicks straight for goal, is good overhead and is good enough over a contested ball that most wingers won't out-muscle him. He's just not aggressive enough nor reads the play well enough to be an elite on-baller from what I've seen. I think full-time in the middle isn't his go, but he's certainly a capable half-forward imo.
