Dylan Stephens
The Sydney Swans used their first pick five since Jarrad McVeigh in 2002 to lock in a talented midfielder from South Australian club Norwood at the 2019 AFL Draft. Dylan Stephens is a prolific ball-winner and creative user of the footy by hand and foot. He played predominantly on a wing in the early matches of the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships before starring on the inside in the final match, gathering 33 disposals in a best-on-ground performance. A penetrating left-footer, he averaged 23.8 disposals and 4.8 tackles across the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships and was rewarded with All Australian honours. He also played some excellent football at senior level with Norwood, averaging 18.2 disposals and 4.6 tackles in 12 matches. Stephens enjoyed a breakout season for the Bloods in 2020 with a memorable AFL debut in Round 6 against Richmond alongside fellow debutant, Chad Warner. Stephens finished the campaign with eight appearances, averaging 12.5 disposals and 3.4 marks per game, while also kicking two goals.

Bitterly disappointed.

We sure know how to waste a first-round pick.

After the first two or three picks the draft is more or less a lottery.

Nobody knows what young players will become and how they'll do in a clubs environment. A lot of it is just luck.

In saying that, disappointed.

I am hearing Sanders will be able to go to North, but it will be under northern academy rules not NGA.

Therefore 16 is useless to them and they can trade it to us for points and something for fisher….

Not useless, but can't see us keeping it... assuming we can bid on Sanders and he is happy to come over. If we trade with Eagles for pick 1/Reid, then I would assume the Port pick will be part of that deal. If Reid isn't on the cards then we will have to find something to do with it, either move it into next year or use it as part of a trade.

We never sent players into the PSD even when we were on the bottom, I can't see us doing that with Stevens. I have no idea what a possible trade could be but am pretty confident the clubs will deal in good faith.

Strikes me as the kind of player that could be better with a number of years under his belt. He's developed his game each year in different aspects albeit very slowly. Feel he's somewhat surplus to requirements at Sydney and he probably realised that too.
The whole years under the belt theory doesn't exist. At 22 you are what you are, there are even 18 yr olds that come in and demonstrate their quality immediately.

At best he'd be a handy player in a team that lacks quality/wingers. That spot does not exist at the swans and likely won't for a fair while.

If he nominates North, I’m assuming we no power in negotiations, as North has first pick in the PSD?

Not a good position.

west Coast have the first rounder and would snap him up.

😂

AFL just make up the rules as they see fit.

North boards seems to think Stephens will become the next success story following the conga line of recent ex-swan stars in Hewitt, Newman, Aliir.

For a 4 year contract I hope for their sake they’re right.

I for one are glad that spot on the swans list is being freed up.

I hope this change to wherever it is spurs him to get the consistency, confidence and most importantly the intensity needed to succeed at the top level because he certainly didn’t show it enough for our team.

Sorry but I was never a believer. Pure outside players are a good team’s cream on top but he just doesn’t have any standout skills at all. Like what’s his best attribute?

We had pick 5, Serong was sitting there, and I don’t think that’s a hindsight pick (he was plenty highly regarded); Daniher wanted to come too, and we blew the whole thing badly.

Pick 5 hasn't been too kind to most teams.
Most notable ones have been, Pendles, DeGoey, Rozee, Cerra, Cunnington, Parish, Stringer, Boak, Franklin, Power, McVeigh.

That's 11 reasonable players from 39 drafts. I wouldn't get too hung up about him. If he was going to be a star we would have seen it by now over 4 seasons. He'll be good but not the difference to winning big games on a regular basis.
North are sh.t so he'll get a game week in week out because he is a worker.

me and off the thread it's pissed me off the treatment , just wish it was Wayward

Can’t have been good for his confidence being in and out of the side. But at some point you’ve got to impose yourself on the game/your position in the team.

Hopefully a change of scenery and some Clarkson tutelage spurs him on (except against us).

How did we blow the Daniher thing?
