Nothing as exciting as it sounds.
He was offered a chance to get away. To escape what he was doing and to make a life out of football. He threw it away.
Hopefully he does it tough, learns the opportunity he had, and works for it again.
Would be nice to see him West Coast in a couple of years or something.
