I'm sure it does but I'm convinced few clubs are as bad as us at it.

Our development is a shemozzle and has been for years. There's many factors but I'm sure this is a big part of it.

It'll sound stupid but I reckon it's partly a hangover of the Sheedy years... he loved "versatility" and throwing players around and I think it strongly influenced Dodoro, who is obviously a stupidly big influence on everything at EFC.

He looks for players that he thinks can do multiple roles and our whole s**t excuse for a "plan" for their careers starts to fall apart before it's started.

It's interesting to look at how different the approach is at the top of the draft compared to later/rookie picks and SSP/midseason recruits.

Pretty sure I heard Dodorro say something about him wanting to get the most talented players close to goal because that’s where they impact the scoreboard.

I think that falls apart pretty fast because being a great forward is so valued that at juniors that good forwards normally stay there during their most of their junior careers.

So if a person isn’t a capable forward or showing flashes at 18-20 they likely won’t develop that later because somebody’s already tried.

It’s much easier for whatever reason to develop Forwards into Defs and Inside mids into flankers then vice versa. Yet Essendon typically has taken the opposite approach to that

Essendon sharpshooter Kyle Langford has set the scene for a huge clash against St Kilda on Saturday night by suggesting the Saints booked their 150th anniversary match against the Bombers because they expected to beat them.

Instead, the undefeated Saints will meet the unbeaten Bombers in what now looms as a tight and tough contest between the early surprise packets of 2023.

“I think they booked us in for a win,” Langford said. “They’re 2-0 and we are 2-0. We are going to build right throughout this week, and we’re going to come out nice and hot against them.”
After accounting for Hawthorn and Gold Coast in the first two weeks, Essendon faces their biggest test yet against the Saints. But with belief building under new coach Brad Scott, the Bombers are no longer considered the easybeats they might have appeared to be when the fixture was released.

St Kilda lost to the Bombers in the 1965 VFL grand final, but turned the tables a year later in the preliminary final and then beating Collingwood by a point in the 1966 grand final to claim their landmark premiership.

Langford said Scott was having an impact, and even though Essendon’s forward line was depleted through injuries to Peter Wright, Sam Weideman, Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti and Jake Stringer, there was no panic at Tullamarine.

“There’s so much belief in this group, and although we’ve had so much happen over the last few years, Scotty’s brought a real sense of calm. He’s just really, really good for our group, and we have a lot of faith in him,” Langford said.

The versatile 26-year-old has been outstanding in the first two rounds playing across defence in round one against Hawthorn before turning the game when he kicked five goals playing forward against the Suns.

It was Langford’s biggest bag in the AFL, but he did kick five majors as an under-18 in the TAC Cup.

“I’m quite happy to play forward. It comes quite naturally to me,” Langford said.

“Preferably, I’d love to lock down one position, but flexibility is a massive strength of mine, and as soon as ‘Weid’ [Weideman] went down during the week
Scotty came up to me and said: ‘we want you to play forward. How do you feel?’

“I said ‘absolutely, no worries’. But I don’t know where I will be playing next week.”

He knows he will be at the MCG, where he and his teammates will be motivated to ruin the Saints’ party.

Give them a little time. It took them years to figure out he wasn't a wingman when it was obvious to everyone that was the case.
