I think if Essendon become a top 4 team its evidence enough Shiel was the right move. Go all in.

I think internally they probably don't believe they are true contenders.

In the NBA, it's well known a team's overall record from previous season, is a far better indicator than their streak to end a season...which people often give too much weight to.

I daresay that is the error people are making with Essendon. Even with Shiel I dont rate their midfield. Shiel Heppell Merrett is still meh.

We’ll they’ve certainly an acceptable midfield and throw in Smith, Zakarakis and a few other parts timers it’s not shabby .
Dons are a tanented outfit, if they have a little luck keeping Daniher on the park they’ll be banging the door down to the top 4.

I'm not sure that warranted airing, but then again, good on the club for being up front.

He's just so clean and quick below his knees. He's going to surprise quite a few, I think.

I agree on all counts Harks.

I know I have banged on a couple of times about Setterfield, but he really does remind me of a midfield version of Mundy. Not quick of foot, but very quick of mind. I just hope he gets a run at it, as his impact injuries have really hurt his output

Setterfield is a unique type that if you're waiting for him to take possession of the ball so you can wrap him up, you may miss your cue.
He's much quicker in taking possession and then executing than many may give him credit for.

Essendon would have loved him and I'm sure they're not disappointed in Sheil, but if given the choice between the two deals, I can't help wondering which deal Dodoro would have taken.

But helped us out massively re the trade. Fingers crossed going forward. We really are building a talented midfield albeit a young one. But i feel these kids will form a massive bond and make our club proud very soon

Hes bigger than they think as well, not going to be easy to tackle, may well get lots of frees..I have a really good feeling about this fellow.

The top-end of the 2016 draft was just so even he could have easily been bid on with the first few picks. If McGrath and Taranto (due in part to GWS' ability to wait on a Setterfield bid) didn't bolt up the draft rankings we'd be looking at a different draft order. It all came down to personal preference on draft night.

Something poetic about bidding on Setterfield in 2016 and then trading him in in 2018.

You missed their b&f winner...

I reckon he'll be like their Nick Stevens in terms of impact.

nope. tackling machine but not a big disposal winner...the other 3 are their main mids.

22 disposals a game still isn’t bad though, only 4 less than Merrett and Heppell.

Something to remember with Smith, the most prolific tackler in 2018... hrs 1cm taller and 5kg heavier that Fisher. Looking forward to what Zac can do after another preseason.

Speaking of preseason, wonder how hard Kennedy is pushing Will? There was that video floating around a couple of days after the trade showing Matty challenging Will to push-up competitions (what it seemed like anyway) and was schooling him.

They have a good best 18 and their game style when left to be played like they want - can be exhilarating (unless you hate them like we do).

Francis, Hurley, McKenna
McGrath, Hooker, Saad
Heppell, Shiel, Zaharakis
Fantasia, Stringer, Langford
McKernan, Daniher, Tipungwuti
Bellchambers, Merrett, Smith
Parish, Ridley, Gleeson, Laverde

Depth: Baguley, Ambrose, Browne, McNeice, Clarke, Begley, Stewart

I think if they had a better coach they'd be doing much better. Well drilled sides and contested ball winning sides (like us on the odd occasion) can break their whole game down.

If I had to make a best 22 with our side and theirs it would look like:

Francis, Hurley, Marchbank
Docherty, Hooker, Simpson
Heppell, Shiel, Zaharakis
Fantasia, Curnow, Fisher
McGovern, Daniher, Tipungwuti
Kreuzer, Cripps, Merrett
Smith, McGrath, Murphy, Dow

12 v 10 their way, I'd back our youth in though.
