The Dems need someone to fire up their base to come out for them like in 2008. I think Bernie is the only one that can realistically do that.

... except Bernie isn’t a Democrat (He’s an Independent)

Reckon the Democrats will be happy with him switching colours again? There’ll always be rank-and-file Democrats who will see him as an outsider and won’t support him out of principle. Look at how many super-delegates he got in the 2016 Primaries.

Surely Trump is not a russian spy
I think they said "unwittingly" or in Spook Speak, a UI (Useful Idiot)

Trump being a “Useful Idiot” is unlikely to be anything of consequence.

Trump would simply retort by tweeting that Muller / SDNY / FBI / whoever are “non-useful idiots” or some such.

Even if Putin himself openly called Trump a “Useful Idiot”, Trump would simply cite it as conclusive evidence that he didn’t collude.

This will be on zero consequence other than something to take the air out of trumps sails and force him away from policy.

Pretty much

One thing that everybody can agree on is that Trump’s #1 policy priority is personal political survival. And he’s been pretty damn good at it - surviving (and sometimes thriving) amongst dozens of scandals that would have sunk others.

Agreed that his first instinct is survival but I don’t think it’s because he is as good, but rather his base of 35% is immovable and the GOP have to back their man given their downside is huge if they tip him out.

He's a Democrat in all but name. He caucuses with them and often votes with them. I don't think actual Dem voters give a * and I'd suggest the majority of the rank and file members wouldn't either.

The leadership of the party will certainly try and put roadblocks up in front of him but it's going to be much more difficult this time as Bernie has a much bigger profile. Superdelegates now have to vote the way the State voted (they changed the party rules).

The Dems may have no choice but to get behind Bernie or get 4 more years of Trump (similar to how the GOP had to back Trump in the end).

I think all but the furthest right Dems will fall in behind Bernie if he gets the nomination.

Bernie will be 79 in 2020. That ship has sailed.

Agreed that his first instinct is survival but I don’t think it’s because he is as good, but rather his base of 35% is immovable ...

Trump has cultivated that by providing them with a steady supply of ammunition to defend themselves with ...

- FBI opening investigation into whether Trump was a Russian asset? Discredit FBI!
- Media reporting something against the President? Fake News!
- School Shootings? Need more guns in schools to protect students!
- Mueller handing down indictments? No collusion, WITCH HUNT!

Trump’s base follow him in much the same way as folks follow their footy team.

You and I can argue about whether it’s Collingwood or North who are grouse, or whether it’s Collingwood or North who suck, but ultimately that’s just tribal banter of no consequence. Unlike our opinions about footy teams, our opinions about politics do have consequences and should be the subject of critical judgement rather than us being mindless lemmings.

(If I was applying critical judgement, reckon I would be choosing to follow Collingwood? QED)

Trump has cultivated this tribal behaviour which has served his own political interests. It’s also served Russia’s interests. Whether that is through coincidence or collusion is the subject of a special counsel investigation.

... and the GOP have to back their man given their downside is huge if they tip him out.

Not really.

The reason the GOP are backing their man is because it’s politically expedient to do so ... a situation that Trump has cultivated by publicly trashing GOP members who don’t support him.

But Trump knows more about any any else

Or is that not true?

Odds are now that the Russians cultivated a useful idiot a long time ago and hit the jackpot when he became POTUS- with a little bit of help from them
The narcissism got him to where he is and as we know your greatest strength is always your greatest weakness so it will also bring him down
History will show the Comey firing /Lester Holt interview and mystifying hosting of Kislyak/ Lahvrov in the Oval Office sans a US presence as early indications that something was amiss
I think Trump left one thing off his list - “Nobody knows more about own goals than I do , no-one”

Back to waiting for Mueller now... stop it m8s... too funny :tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy:

One of the leading characters of this play is named Vladimir ...

I hope that will be the attack line used by the Trump sycophants (that and screaming socialist ofcourse). A recipe for disaster considering the guy Bernie would be up against isn't that much younger.

You can't tell me that Trumpists would give a * if Trump was 89. They would still vote for him.

The Democratic establishment types will certainly try and run that line as well (they already are).

I don't think people give a *. He's clearly still in good shape, sharp as a tack, has the energy to constantly campaign. I think in the end they just want someone that represents them.

Be that as it may, the only way it could result in anything of consequence is if ...

Trump to have been involved with the Russians AND ...
Correct. Just as Dossier vows and declares.

- Trump to have been doing something very illegal with them such as treason. Unlikely financial crimes (eg: money laundering) or campaign finance crimes (eg: Russia funnelling money to Trump campaign through the NRA) would cut it. AND ...
Correct. Except for NRA just as dossier says. (I don't think the NRA angle had become public when dossier was being written up.). On the other hand, Hillary probably wouldn't have wanted a full on with the NRA so it would have been dropped anyway.

- Illegal activity to have been done with nefarious intent. Unlikely being groomed as a “useful idiot” would cut it. AND ...
Correct. Just as dossier vows and declares.,

- The US authorities to have incontrovertible evidence of said illegal activity AND said nefarious intent. Just having witness testimony won’t cut it - he can bat them away with aplomb.
AND ...

- These details to be made public.
AND ...

- This to all happen while he is still alive and still in office.
not yet. Not a scintilla.

That’s a very high bar to jump over.
The completely unverified dossier commissioned and paid for by DNC/HRC was a political shakedown of the Opposition Presidential candidate in the 2016 election ... the greater the concoction, the higher the bar.

Unlikely.

His base are more interested in him building a wall than they are about him colluding with Russia.

He entertains them, he makes them laugh and he's never boring. And he is a celebrity.[/QUOTE]

It's classic establishment Democrat. "Which demographic profile will our candidate be able to woo?" Ignore policy, or voting record. Just focus on demographics and winning by whatever they need to.

Kamala Harris is a DNC's wet dream. Woman, of colour, so they use "sexist" and "racist" interchangeably if you try to argue against her. Only been there 2 years, so she has no real record to point to. Takes money from corporate donors, and won't shake up the system. TICK.
