Player Watch #5 Jack Ross

If he wants to play he needs to learn something else
First practice game he was behind Martin in centre bounce attendance. Last week Aarts was in the guts more and Ross played more wing which suggests that he is being given a second role but they want to also look at Aarts as he has trained as a mid all summer.

With Pickett out there are rotations available. He is not a natural wingman but in both games he went okay. 27 disposals in the guts and not a bad run last week on the wing. He plays the wing a bit more like a midfielder making up numbers around the ball.

Personally I think against big midfielders we have nobody that has the strength to play that tackling defensive mid. Graham does it occasionally but against Carlton we will need it. Cripps is in great form and will need to be sat on. Only Ross can do that as you are not going to waste Cotch, Martin, Prestia on that. You will need it against Port and Melbourne and probably a few other midfields. If he can change to the wing and be effective then he has it over our only other big inside mid in RCD, who has more potential but is a wait and see at this stage.

Ross and rcd are only 21 years old
Petracca and Oliver are 25 and 24
Not comparing abilities by any stretch
Just a point on that it takes time to become elite
so compare their first three years it is still chalk and cheese. Oliver who in particular was inside was going at 29 disposals in his second season.
Covid or no covid they have still been underwhelming. If neither have a break out season they could both end up on the chopping block.

The fact neither have done much has to be a concern for everyone.

Both Melb. players came in a very highly touted juniors and very high draft picks and both had pretty easy midfields to establish themselves in so not really a fair comparison.

Yes they would have both got a gig in our midfield, but to me they are the best two mids in the game right now. Petracca was not a permanent mid until he was about 23 years old. RCD is closer to Petracca in that he is taking a long time to get AFL fit, Ross started off like Oliver but has gone backwards. Time will tell if he rebounds. Neither has their talent, but they have shown enough to project that they might become regular players once they get a real crack at it.

Ross is a role player. Has the potential to be decent. But he'll have to work hard and get that hard edged contest side going full bore to make it IMHO. But he's shown enough that ha can do it.

Petracca should have been #1 in his draft and only the stupid saints selected mcCartin and trac went pick #2
Oliver was drafted at pick #4 and was a top tier talent

You are comparing 2 kids selected at #2 & #4 to picks #20 & #43

The 2 melbourne players were playing from the day they got drafted in a s**t melbourne team and playing at the highest level and compared to the 2 richmond boys drafted during a dynasty trying to break into a midfield consisting of Martin , Cotchin , Prestia , Edwards etc

Then add to that NO DEVELOPMENT OR GAMES due to covid.

FMD you are in desperate need of a doctor
Lol there you go letting the facts get in the way of a good story.

It's pretty easy to s**t on our kids (I always find that weird from "supporters") because if they fail someone feels like a genius (it actually just makes them an ass imo) in their own tiny mind and if the kid does succeed, well the critic was only an armchair tosser and wtf would they actually know anyway, nobody cares that they were just plain wrong and because they're anonymous, there's no slap...it's a free hit...the domain of cowards.

Keep calling this garbage out. Too much of it on this forum against our own cubs when in reality the club has done an outstanding job making diamonds out of late picks.

There's a kind of bizarre psychology at play here, where someone can make themselves look like a hero (see ass imo above) by getting in first to shitcan kids wearing our colours and giving it all they've got. Talk about a false economy. It's much harder to actually back a kid, despite their faults and like the club, see them for what they bring to the table, not what they don't.

There's nothing wrong either with being critical of a performance or an effort, whilst still supporting the player because they're part of your team. It's a subtle difference lost on the soft...it shows a great weakness of character to just say they're s**t or hopeless or lazy or rubbish over and over hoping they'll be proven right so they look like a legend. Well, they don't. They look like a dick.

I believe you support your team and the players no matter what. Supporting them despite their deficiencies, shows strength of character that you find in successful football clubs and in life. It's easy to criticise, especially from the cheap seats...it's harder and is more defining to stay the course and be a supporter, a true supporter.

I would have thought four decades in the wilderness would have taught everyone that. I don't give a * if we finish last this year, after the five amazing years we've had I could cop that. But there's those greedy types who find fault in everything and everyone and frankly they're a ******* downer before a ball has even been bounced this year.

Their defence is the pathetic "well somebody has to call out the other side of the coin"...well jerkoffs, that's the oppos job and the media. Either you're a supporter of you can * right off imo.

Well done R2R and others calling out weakness when you see it.

Ross is overhated on these forums. First season he was great, better than expected for a first year player. 2020 gets a position change loses weight and has subpar performances (inevitably) 2021 improves from 2020 with a series of average and solid performances despite still being out of position. 2022 comes around had a great pre season, was solid against the hawks. Don’t know what the hate is about.

Play him inside mid ffs. He was so good year 1 and since then they have played him wing, HF, HB and he's been shite. He doesn't have good skills but can find the contested pill. Dimma and the match committee are pretending like we can actually win center clearance when in reality we haven't won one since the Queensland bubble.

will have to wait a bit longer
Plenty ahead of him tonight that need to take a good hard look at themselves. Ross played his role on the wing well.
