7 Doug Hawkins
Height: 180
Weight: 79
Birthday: 5 May 1960
Period on list: 1978 to 1994
Senior Games: 329
Goals: 216
Recruited From: Braybrook
Honours: Games record holder. Victorian state selection 1982, 1984 and 1985. Best and fairest 1985. Captain 1990 to 1993. Leading goalkicker 1991 (38). Member of the Team of the Century.
He was wingman with every skill in the book. He would always play on the eastern wing at the Western Oval and it became named after him as "Hawkins' Wing". He had pace, skill, was a prolific kick winner, could carry the ball a hundred meters and took a good grab.
His first game was in the forward pocket but in his second game he got to the wing and made it his own. He was rarely beaten on the wing and he disposed of the ball excellently. He had his own following of fans who would position themselves in the outer on his wing just to get a better view. In that second game he was on Robert Muir of StKilda who threatened to kill him if he got a kick. Doug James Hawkins was petrified, but he got some kicks and a goal.

In 1982 Essendon stepped in with a big fat wallet and tried to buy up Dougie, but he stuck to the red, white and blue. He did a cruciate ligament in his knee in 1986 and was out for 12 months.
In one match North's Phil Krakoeur was lashing out after being racially vilified and was reported. Dougie somehow managed to convince the tribunal that he didn't get hit at all and Phil got off the charge.
The first semi-final against North Melbourne in 1985 was probably one of 'The Hawk's greatest games with 25 kicks, 13 handballs and 11 marks on the wing.
According to one of his greatest rivals, Hawthorn's Robert Dipierdomenico, Dougie 'was Footscray'.
He had a reputation of playing it as hard on the field as he did off the field. Apparently he had a drink on the plane on the way home from, disobeying coach Malthouse's instructions. He was dropped the next week.

He was according to urban legend, indirectly the cause of the fallout between coach Mick Malthouse and Brad Hardie. Brad Hardie coming to the aid of Hawkins in a physical way, after coach Malthouse berated Hawkins and his family at a training session when Doug was late.
After he retired from the Bulldogs he played a season for Fitzroy.

He continues to be a media celebrity into 2004. One of his standing jokes is that he can't say manure properly.

7 Ray Huppatz
Period on list: 1974 to 1977
Senior Games: 66
Goals: 73
Recruited From: Woodville
Honours: Represented South Australia in many state games. In 1976 he represented Victoria against WA.
Fast goal-kicking rover.
Could weave out of packs.
Had a dispute with the club over an injury claim that flared up into a media driven 'player strike'.

Cleared to North Melbourne for whom he continued to play well. Retired with knee soreness.

7 Ricky Spargo
Period on list: 1966 to 1971
Senior Games: 64
Goals: 65
Recruited From: Footscray
Father was Robert H Spargo who played for Footscray between 1934 and 1941.

Western Bulldogs Brother was Robert Spargo who played for Footscray between 1958 and 1963, 80 games.

Was uncle to Paul Spargo who was the son of Robert who was from Albury in North Melbourne's zone and was stuck with having to play with North.

Ricky was a winger and rover who was blessed with speed like the rest of his family.

The comments so far have been great. Keep them coming. I can't remember too many number 7's. We are a day ahead. I'll drop a day over the weekend.

Ray Huppatz was one my early favourites. I suppose anyone that rovered to Dempsey would have been ok ala Atkins to Wynd. He wasn't stupid eitehr as he followed Dempsey to North.

I remember the duo winning the piggyback race in the vfl olympics.

Doug was trapped by three Carlton players up against the boundary line on the wing on the southern side of the ground. He handballed the footy at the boot of one of them, the ball ricocheted off the boot, over the boundray line on the full. Doug gets a free kick instead of givng up the ball or being pinged for holding.

Just watched a game on foxtel that was played in 1973 at the western oval against Hawthorn. There was a player who wore number 7, his name was Cook (not Fred). He was a wingman with good skills. Anybody know anything about him??????
How many games played? Where did he originate from?

There was also a player who got over 20 kicks for the game for us wearing number 25, blonde wingman with very good skills. His surname was Jacks, surprised I have never heard of him before.
Can anyone shed some light on these 2 players???

Probably Graeme Cook and definately Ronnie Jacks. Can't remember much about either, but I do remember Ronnie Jacks playing one blinder for us, but only one. I think he was from WA.

What show was it on (on Foxtel), I hope it's repeated tonight.

We had 2 players called Graeme Cook who played after one another.

One from 1966 to 1970 who played 37 games, was a rover, recruited frrom East Hopetoun, kicked 18 goals. He was there at the same time as Fred Cook.

Then there was the one that you saw, also Graeme Cook, played from 1971 to 1973 played 21 games from half back and kicked 8 goals. From Warragul.

Ron Jacks played 11 games in 1973 as a rover, he was from Subiaco. Kicked 5 goals.

I think you will find that the G Cook from Hopetoun played more games than the other and mainly on the Half back flank
