Player Watch #8: Bailey Scott - signs until end 2026

What's the issue though?

His disposal was, is and always be average on a good day, shit on a bad day. We know that.

His workrate is excellent. He's poor in the contest.

Does he offer enough?

Dropping him won't change him or make him a better player. His limitations will always be there as will his strengths. The only thing that could improve him is changing his role where he's either less relied on to execute kicks to targets risking turnover or instructing him to handball/look for easy options to limit turnover.

Trade - get a second round pick.

Couple of players that could potentially net 2nd round picks. Scott, Ford.

Im thinking we can pay his full salary and offload him elsewhere for a better pick. Trade those two picks up and try and wedge an actual KP defender out of another club.

At this current stage, im trading Comben too. Should get another 2nd rounder. 3x 2nd round picks. Which clubs need points?

We couldn’t get a second round pick for a guy who kicked 60 goals three years running, who the f*ck is going to be coughing up second rounders for any of our players (outside of LDU, Sheez and X)?

We wanted him and his wife out. We didn’t care.. I would have given him away for free

I’d love to know what went down in 2020 between those two and the rest of the group in the hub.

So many untold stories. One day it will all be blown open.

There weren't too many inside 50 stoppages because the Hawks were bleeding like crazy. He gets back there though when he's on the fat side.
I saw him back there at least three times and I wasn't particularly looking for it.

I'd consider it but we'd have bugger all wing depth if we traded Bailey, but he's out of contract next year though I think.
Agree on trading Ford, but don't think we'll get a 2nd rounder if he's playing VFL most of the year and OOC.
Assess Comben end of 2026, 50 games in you see if the key position kids belong.
We actually would need a good replacement coming in if we were going to trade him.

Not too many clubs will need points, unless they have multiple players ranked in the top 15-20.
GC have enough points I think, but they could trade their R1's for points and futures combo.
Swans, Lions or GWS might with teens R1, but We've already got the two R2's and R3 to trade up if we want to trade up.

There's a book, or a doco, or an expose from Mick Warner in this, surely.

The whole ****ing thing. Five years later and we still haven't received. May never.

Yehhhh I reckon

Let's look at some of the recent player trades for 2nd round picks.

2024:

Adelaide gets: Alex Neal Bullen
Melbourne gets: Pick 28

At age 28, Neal-Bullen had played 176 games and kicked 120 goals and was a premiership player. He had played every game for the Demons in the 4 preceding seasons. He won the coaches award in the 2021 Demons BnF.

NMFC gets: Caleb Daniel
Bulldogs get: Pick 25

I assume I don't need to go too deep into this one? Daniel is an All-Australian, premiership player, Bulldogs Best and Fairest winning veteran.

2023:

Sydney gets: Taylor Adams
Collingwood gets: Pick #33

Adams a 200+ game veteran, All Australian, and Collingwood best and fairest winner.

2022:

Geelong gets: Tanner Bruhn
GWS gets: Pick #21

Bit of an interesting one because Geelong were paying for the potential, not the as-yet-seen production. At the time of the trade, 20~ year old Bruhn had played a total of 30 games across 2 seasons in the GWS system.

So recent history suggests second round picks are either traded for proven veterans who have been All-Australian level (or close to it), or for young promising guys.

I cannot find any examples of a 2nd round pick being traded for a 25~ year old who hasn't really gotten any individual accolades, been a part of a premiership, and was dropped to VFL team mid-season for form.

Sorry DY.

Realistically who would we trade him too, he's only going to teams worse than us like the Eagles and maybe Richmond but given all the kids they've drafted I suspect they'd prefer to get games into them.

Bad time to be dropped. No way he could make it back off a practice game. Will probably have to spend a month out of the team minimum.

Way to prove DY point.

Baileys best is at least on the same level as all that you mentioned

I would have thought if Bailey were truly worth a second round pick, this conversation wouldn’t be taking place…
There's a big difference between pick 20 and pick 35.

I suppose. In any case, I don’t think our chief issue is personnel. We’re not playing as a cohesive unit. Until the coaches sort that out, it doesn’t matter who we put on the park.
