Am pinching myself I can even fathom the idea of comparing any side to this legendary Hawk side from the 80s, but it'd be an interesting battle. Who would win?

88/89
B: Collins Langford Ayres
HB: Maginess Mew Tuck
C: Dipierdomenico Schwab Pritchard
HF: Wittman Brereton Kennedy
F: Abbott Dunstall Morrissey
Foll: Dear Buckenara Platten
Inter: Greene Hall Condon Anderson
Emer: Madigan, Curran

vs

13/14

B: Guerra Lake Gibson
HB:Birchall Stratton Burgoyne
C: Hill Mitchell Smith
HF: Hodge Roughhead Breust
F: Gunston Franklin Rioli
Foll: Bailey Sewell Lewis
Inter: Hale, Puopolo, Shiels, Langford
Emer: Simpkin, Spangher, Duryea

88/89 would hit 13/14 with everything all day. Early in the third, despite some blood and bruises 13/14's run, spread and superior fitness allows them to pull 6 points clear with 5 minutes to play. In the magnificent final minutes (insert favourite 88/89 player here) breaks three tackles to drill one from 45. Draw.

The 88/89 team went 21/3 & 21/3....Hard to match let alone beat....Both great sides as history now attests: Footscray wished they had such problems!

Anyhow....Cue the Mexican girl!

St.Kilda and Western Bulldogs can't compare their Premiership team.... Let alone their back to back teams.

It's a sad world if you don't support Hawthorn.

Swans would trade it all for our record, oh wait they can't trade anymore, at least not if they want to toast the deal with a tasty COLA....

Lake on Dunstall

Collins chasing Rioli around

Langers on Roughie

Condo vs Lewis would be sniping each other all game

insane matchups all over the ground

the Lake vs Dunstall and Langers/Mew vs Roughhead were the one's that intrigued the most. Also Ayres vs Hodge. wow

I've always thought the '08 GF was the prime sporting example of the unstoppable force against the immovable object. On that day, that age old question was answered in a sporting sense, with the immovable object winning the day.

This suggestion has brought up a new version of it. The only question is, in this case, which is which?

Pound for pound, the 88/9 side shits all over the current side. However, if they played against each other, and the 13/4 side played like they did last week against the Swans, they would probably win. Play like they did against Port and they get slaughtered.

The 88/89 team was unquestionably superior in terms of talent and physical toughness. The 13/14 may well be more disciplined and better drilled though.
You could argue the 13/14 team is more impressive by virtue of the fact it was assembled without opening the checkbook for ready-made SANFL/WAFL stars.

I still regard our 88 team as the greatest I've seen. It was invincible. It would turn in performances akin to the 2014 GF week after week. Utterly dominant.

Hawks 13/14 were certainly the unstoppable force. Freo / Sydney were the movable objects

please. that was a quarter of a century ago. teams of that era cannot be compared with today's teams in terms of strength, skill, endurance, and especially defensive pressure. plus they were still only semi professional back then and some of them worked other jobs. if they played against each other the 13/14 team wins by 100 points minimum.

Which is why I think you have to try to keep each side in its own context when you make the comparison. The two sides were really playing quite different games, so you have to ask which side was better at playing the game as it was at the time? Or we can all just bask in the glory that is Hawthorn.
