Exactly what I was thinking.I think you're underselling the importance of contested footy. There is more contested footy these days which will be reflected in more contested stats. By the same token, more contested footy means you need players that are good at it.

Who would have thought garry lyon an ex Melbourne forward believes it necessary to write an article about how a Melbourne forward deserves the rising star award over our paddy
Don't over rate contested football, with more packs around now, there will always be more contested ball to be had.
also contested football is over rated, it doesn't matter where you get it, it only matters what you do with it

Young Carlton star Patrick Cripps has been recognised for his outstanding season, winning the 2015 Chris Judd Development Academy Award.
The dual Brownlow medallist returned to Ikon Park on Friday to personally present the award to Cripps – who found it somewhat surreal receiving an award named in honour of his football hero.
“I put a lot of work in over the summer and it was just amazing to win the award,” Cripps said.
“It obviously means a lot – Juddy is a champion of the game and I idolised him growing up.
“Juddy has had a huge influence on my career and he’s given me a few little tips which have really helped me, so I can’t thank him enough.”

Does Cripper's hair have to be PERFECTLY tousled every time? Does he have his own Hollywood-style tousler? Please no Ciccone gags they bore the **** out of people.

Good read. Loved this bit..Who would have thought garry lyon an ex Melbourne forward believes it necessary to write an article about how a Melbourne forward deserves the rising star award over our paddy
So, who wins? Is it the young man who takes his position in the centre square each week and builds his reputation on extricating the football from congested areas with clinical precision, clean hands and creative peripheral vision that releases teammates into space that they never knew existed, until they run on to a ball expertly delivered on a platter by a player who sees the game unfolding in front of him as quickly as those who have played 200 more games than him?
Sheehan was the inaugural winner.Judd shrinking in his old age
Cripps given the "Chris Judd Development Academic Award". Anyone else think this award wouldn't exist if we didn't have a Cripps to give it to?
Close second to Boek for best hair.Does Cripper's hair have to be PERFECTLY tousled every time? Does he have his own Hollywood-style tousler? Please no Ciccone gags they bore the **** out of people.
He wants to sign a new contract to 2019 I heardThe HUN has an article today saying that the club hopes to talk with his management over the off season and extend his contract beyond 2017. Good move.

You are correct. Didn't think we'd have an award named after a player while he was still on the list, but I guess Judd can be an exception.Sheehan was the inaugural winner.

Gary needs to watch more football if he thinks good midfielders don't get tagged anymore. Just because Vince spectacularly unsuccessful against Cripps doesn't mean he was trying to tag.Good read. Loved this bit..
All in all, one eyed with tinted shades and all, I read that Hogan does great despite a weak midfield and lack of i50s while Crippa just does, at an elite level and has gotten better as the season's progressed.
Paddy would be miles ahead if he converted a few of those easy set shots. With his work ethic, you know he'll be a 30+ goal kicking mid in the future.

The best thing that I love about Cripps and the way he goes about it is his anticipation of where one of his team mates is going to be... he gets his arms free, stands in the tackle and then just handballs it away and 9 times out of 10, it ends up in one of his team mates hands while they are on a break towards the forward line only to stop and kick backwards while Cripps shakes his head and heads to the back flank to do it all again.
