Then again, 1998 was also satisfying as we went back to back and proved to the Football world that 1997 wasn't a "fluke"! :)

But I am not talking about the one day in September in general.

OVERALL, which was the better YEAR?

1997.

Early in the season that club was arguably at it's lowest point in history, losing to Port. To get it together from there and then go on to win 4 finals and win the premiership, the first ever for the club, I think it's a pretty obvious choice as to what was better. We also tasted defeat in the prelim against the Bulldogs before using our get out of jail free card. It was such an amazing feeling to get to the Grand Final that it seemed nothing could beat it. But something did beat it. The very next week.

Winning the first, coming from nowhere, has to make 97 the better year.

1998 was great too, but it's hard to beat the first.

I remember that first loss to Port Adelaide... I was heartbroken!

I was at the MCG for the 1997 Preliminary against the Bulldogs... amazing experience! :)

1997 was my favourite year. Everything just fit in perfectly. I was in Grade 6 at a small primary school. Everyone knew that I was the only Crows fan there. I walked around for the rest of the school year with a smug attitude, but remained rather tight lipped about my joy. I didn't need to say anything though. Everyone knew.
Also being our first and the fact we actually strung together some of that potential we'd shown in the earlier years (1993) made it especially satisfying.
The 1998 win wasn't as prominent a memory because I was in QLD at the time and all the hype was about the NRL GF. I had to make my own hype and for a 13 year old away from home for the first time that was pretty tough. I watched the game and cheered as loud as I could while staying in the house of relatives I'd only met once before. In 1998 I was first year in high school. There were a couple of other Crow fans that I knew of, but didn't actually know. I wore my scarf the first day back after the holidays. I was ridiculed all day and although I know I hurt everyone else with my obvious retort I was also hurt because at that age all you wanna do is fit in. The only thing that got me through was that I was actually in QLD on a hockey trip on GF day playing for Victoria so I could hang it on all of my teammates.

1997 no question.

As a South Adelaide supporter, obviously I have known virtually no success in my life. Don't bring up 1979 - 9.9 to 3.16 = very painful.

So when we won the preliminary my head almost exploded, I couldn't beleive that we were in a grandfinal. took 10 minutes just to sink in.

Then not to mention have a front row table at Players bar, where we all spent the fourth quarter standing on the tables, bowing in hommage to the cries of Jaaaaarrrrman.

very special, 1998 was nice but still not the first time ;)

97 was ecstacy.

98 was incredibly satisfying.

The road was tougher in 98 and to overcome all the obstacles and triumph when everyone doubted us, was very pleasing.

But there's nothing like the first time.

I think 98 was a better team though.

1997 ans 1998 were both very sweet.

1997 nobody rated the AFC, we didnt have many big name players but we simply had 100% commitment for 21 blokes and a coach who knew how to get the best out of his players.

1998 was awesome simply because we had so many hurdles to get through first was five games on the road we travelled a total of 11.000kms to win that flag in five weeks we lost to Melbourne in the first week by 55 pts we had our heads down and had to face Sydney in Sydney in atroutious conditions, but the AFC stood tall, then had to trek back to the MCG the legs would have hurt but in the end we romped our way to our second GF and once again smashed the dreams of the Bulldogs, we then had to face a very tough, hard well coached Nth Melbourne on the last Saturday in September, it took us till the midway point of the 3rd quarter to break Norths back, when McAvaney utter the famous commentery 'Scores level, Scores level' when Vardy nailed through one from 30m out ;)

Both are as sweet as each other, and ............... nah sorry cant say what I want to say as I shouldnt be getting ahead of myself :p

Nail. Hammer. Head :)

id say 1998 for two reasons:

1 - north melb were a way better team than the saints

2 - the second half of the 98 GF is the best football we have ever played

- That first loss to Port, I felt we had something to prove after that.

- "Pittifull Pitman"

- "I don't give a rats tossbag"

It was just a great era for the AFC, even if it was quite short.

Watching Blighty after the siren in 1998 was another great highlight. Just seeing uncontrolable emotion pour out of the great man was a great sight.
